This is largely due to the experience that Jay has as a crime-fighter and a human being, he is old enough to have learned a remedy for almost any problem or at least smart enough to be convincing when he ad libs. Though his demeanor is warm and welcoming, the aged hero is not entirely as chipper as he makes himself out to be. Jay now feels the strain that his lifestyle has placed on his body and mind, not to mention his wife, most days he feels regret for the choices he made in life and rues the fact that there is little he can do about it. While knowing that his presence is comforting to many and that he has saved innumerable lives, he can't help but feel his life would have been different had he focused on himself, focused on his family, perhaps he'd be happier. All he knows is that he is growing tired of the life, and weary of The Flash. I've tried to make the Scarlet Speedster seem a little more human. If this is an issue, I will change it. Thanks.) Speed. The greatest distance traversed in the shortest time. The concept of human acceleration had always fascinated young Jay Garrick, well more so, superhuman acceleration. In fact, he spent great parts of his youth enthralled by the comic strips that told the tale of 'Whip Whirlwind', a character imbued with the power of super speed, a gift that the young boy would later evolve. With his childhood spent running and dreaming of a day when he would eclipse the speeds of horses, automobiles and even locomotives, Jay won a sporting scholarship to Midwestern University in Keystone city. Despite being brought to the university for his athletic prowess, the young Garrick was also quite academically astute, double-majoring in chemistry and physics. During his junior year, Garrick was working on an experiment that sought to purify hard water without the being residual radiation in a cyclotron. It was during this scientific endeavour that Jay unwittingly exposed himself to fumes released when a test tube of hard water was spilt. Knocked unconscious by the noxious vapours, Jay was rescued by a colleague, though he remained in a coma for nearly a fortnight during which the young man's metabolism increased and his body began to reject nutrients. Once he woke, Jay discovered that his body was now capable of superhuman speed. With his health regained and his childhood dream realised by an accidental miracle, Garrick decided to use his newfound ability as his fictional idol had, thus he became the superhero known as, The Flash. While The Flash protected the denizens of Keystone City, Jay Garrick transferred to Keystone University where he would receive his Masters in Chemistry & Physics and meet his future fiance, Joan Williams. With his academic studies complete, Jay gained employment as a researcher at Keystone Labs and The Flash became an honorary member of the local law enforcement agency. Life was good for the young crime-fighter but something sinister loomed in his future. The Thunder of War Approaches... An active member of the All-Star Squadron, a group of powerful individuals dedicated to the fight against injustice and terrorism, The Flash and his allies were recruited to aid his homeland in the fight against the armies of Nazi Germany. It was in this war, the war to end all wars, that Jay first experienced the tragedy of death, it was on the battlefield that The Flash first dirtied his hands with the warm scarlet of human blood. During the fight, as The Flash hit his maximum speed, he became able to tap into the 'Speed Force', an other-worldly energy force that expanded his abilities almost infinitely, limited only by his imagination. A talent that was utilised to implement several grievous strikes against 'Gerry' and accrued a far greater body count then he had hoped. The war, as it is with most returned servicemen, is a sore spot for Garrick. He recalls it as the dark times, when he did what was necessary to save the lives of the boys in the fray, he did what he had to so they could go home. With blood on his hands the crime-fighter toyed with the concept of retirement but his skills were required by the American people again, as post-war America became prey for innumerable super-powered criminals. Enlightened yet aged by the horrors of war, Jay approached crime-fighting in a different manner, he now knew how precious human life was and vowed to do all within his power to ensure that no life was wasted unnecessarily. Thus, The Flash became one of the founding members of the Justice Society of America, an organisation dedicated to preserving all life, and Jay Garrick seized his. Marrying his sweetheart, Joan, and intent on starting a family. Jay bought Keystone Labs and founded Garrick Laboratories determined to have a life beyond The Flash. Though Jay's break from the crime-fighting world was not a clean one. Often drawn back into the fray by his sense of duty and compassion, it was on one such occasions that he, Joan and the Justice Society were bathed in “chronal radiations” that increased their vitality to preternatural levels. Though Garrick finally threw in the proverbial towel when the government demanded he reveal his identity to remain above suspicion of being a communist, insulted by the notion the original Flash retired. In this time Garrick Laboratories flourished, though the same could not be said about the Garrick lineage, the couple discovered they were unable to conceive children. Determined to have a baby the Garricks adopted an infant, though the boy, only months old, died of pneumonia despite all of Jay's efforts to still deaths hand. Again a broken man, Jay Garrick mourned the loss of his son, Jason, and wept for his shattered soul. From his loss came a new resolve, The Flash lived again, if but for a moment. Three of his oldest enemies conspired against him once more and with the resonator they built, they sent Keystone City out of real space, putting its citizens in suspended animation and causing the rest of the world to forget the city's existence. Waking the Dead... Years later, Jay and the citizens of Keystone City were woken by the second Flash, the two heroes banded together to defeat the men responsible for trapping the city out-of-time-and-space. With the city safe and another to bear his mantle, Jay retired once more, leaving the crime-fighting to his younger counterparts, though on the odd occasion the senior speedster would return to aid his fellow heroes in certain situations that required extra muscle, namely crises that threatened man's existence, like the one that claimed his successors life. With Barry Allen dead, Wally West became the second man to claim Jay's mantle, and the original Flash returned to semi-active duty only to aid the younger hero when duty called him away from the city. Now that disaster once more rears it's ugly head, Jay Garrick finds himself returning to help the world prevent a crisis that would consume them all. This means that they are connected to the Speed Force and are tethered to it. Some characters may control their Speed Force imparted powers in different ways such as only Superhuman Strength or even directed through Lighting but no matter their adaptions they are still connected to the Force. Superhuman Speed - Speed Force conduits have one main ability above all else. Conduits are connected to the barrier and accumulation of all Speed known in their universe. These characters immediately understand how to run at superhuman speeds and their bodies instinctively understand how to react at high-speed situations. Older speedsters have a reduced but maxed speed of 770mph which is just below sonic booms allowing them to react to situations without causing civilians undue stress. Speedsters in their prime can travel at much faster speeds such as the max level of recorded aided speed on Earth and even reach the speed of light with enough willpower. It is possible for conduits to travel much faster than the speed of light however such levels require an incredible amount of stress. Speedsters unaccustomed to their max level of speeds may detach themselves from the Speed Force or even become part of the Speed Force by accident. Superhuman Endurance - Speed Force conduits have to access the Speed Force for a number of different tasks. Most Speedsters use their superhuman speed and react at superhuman speeds; therefore, they must run for extended periods or operate for a large amount of time. Their bodies can handle the stresses of superhuman racing without noticeable distress. Supercharged Brain Activity - Sometimes neglected by Speedsters who only operate at superhuman speeds and never slow down enough to understand their full potential; Speedsters can access superhuman levels in their brains further than processing information. They can test theories, understand difficult equations and run trial and error in their brains at superhuman speeds. Different conduits access this activity in different ways. Self-Sustenance - Speed Force conduits travel at incredible speeds which cause their bodies to work overtime. In situations where their bodies may be too fast for them to breathe they may impart on the Speed Force for sustenance. However, this almost always results in the conduits having an increased metabolism at all times requiring them to constantly refill their energy supplies. Sharing the Force - Speed Force conduits can allow their friends or family members to run along side them at their equaled speeds. Certain conduits who may only have minor access to the Force may achieve full levels of the Force due to the main conduit's association with it. Speed Force Aura - People who are propelled by the conduits during high speed situations can survive the harsh conditions associated with mach speeds. When the conduit must rescue an individual from a burning building these individuals will be protected while within the aura. Steal Speed - Speed Force conduits can steal the accelerated motion or momentum from objects or people to reduce their speed or even virtually stop them. Conduits may also steal the speed from other Speedsters or other fast moving people. Accelerated Healing - Speed Force conduits are not invulnerable nor durable enough to sustain damage however if they are harmed they will heal at high speeds. Any normal wear and tear damage to their bodies are almost instantly healed. Decelerated Ageing - Speed Force conduits have a slowed aging process. This power can be imparted on their most intimate loved ones by extended contact rather than distribution. Energy Construct Creation - Speed Force conduits can use the matter generated by their speed to create solid objects such as walls or bridges. This power requires constant concentration and reapplication of the construct for it to remain stable. Flash's after images are also construct creations. Flight - Speed Force conduits can rotate their arms and spin their bodies like tops to achieve something of a kind of helicopter flight. However, with practice conduits can even achieve controllable flight if launched at high speeds. Despite their flight abilities they are always faster on their feet. Increased Perceptions - Speed Force conduits traveling at the speed of sound may miss important events as they run by. The Speed Force grants them enhanced senses that allow them to see, hear, smell, touch and/or taste at an increased speed and understand it as it is processed. Infinite Mass Punch - Speed Force conduits have an increased level of strength added to their bodies which they can impart in different ways. Certain speedsters can strengthen each and every move they make however this requires attention and stress for each movement and therefore is almost never used. In most cases conduits can focus the Speed Force's extra-dimensional energies into one massive punch; when used in practiced this punch pushed a meta-human from one continent to another. Phasing - Speed Force conduits can vibrate their molecules so quickly that they can achieve intangibility for short bursts allowing them to phase through objects. Vortex Creations - Speed Force conduits that plant themselves on the ground and rotate their extremities can cause an incredible amount of wind to burst through their focused funnel. Most Speedsters use this ability automatically when they run reducing the air currents around their body to low enough levels to no longer inhibit their speed. Creatively, Speedsters can create tornadoes and gusts with their arms. KNOWN ABILITIES: Jay is exceptionally well-versed in all manner of sciences, namely chemistry & physics, he is also able to think of solutions to even the most complex problems. STRENGTH LEVEL: While generally peak human, Jay's strength can exceed that of a superhuman level. WEAKNESSES: Jay's most predominant weakness is his age, he is more vulnerable to damage and fatigue now then ever before. With this being said, Jay is also susceptible to normal damage, if a bullet were fast enough, it would kill him. Also over-exertion is a potential problem, for if Jay were to push himself to far, his connection to the Speed Force could be severed, or worse still, he could be absorbed by it. With experience comes knowledge... With knowledge comes power... If that is the case why do I feel so damn powerless? Though the sun was now reaching its zenith, only a sliver of sunlight managed to penetrate the darkness that enveloped the elderly couple, but it did not pierce the darkness that had claimed Jay Garrick's soul. The room was silent, save for his shallow breathing, the crying had stopped after what felt like hours. She was gone, there was nothing he could do. Once the world's fastest man, he was reduced to little more then a tired and lonely old man. Joan was gone, yet he remained, it wasn't fair. The powers that he had once regarded as a miracle, a gift from god, now seemed like a curse, a constant reminder that he would be trapped in this realm for another lifetime. Cradling his wife's lifeless body, the scarlet speedster was at a loss, for all his power and knowledge there was little that could prepare him for this. While he knew it was inevitable, Jay had lived in ignorant bliss, content with the notion that both he and Joan would be together forever, despite her ageing. Jay took solace in the fact that she had slipped away in her sleep and that her death hadn't come at the hand of one of his enemies. Placing his lips gently against her's, he kissed her one last time, “Goodbye my love, may you fin... find pe... peace,” Fresh warm tears formed as he bid the love of his life farewell.
