History
Home world of an ancient, expansionist empire, the planet Thanagar in the Polaris system was ruled by a corrupt and oft-times despotic aristocratic class. While the high class of Thanagar lived in high towers, the many alien races which served them were transported from their conquered worlds and resided in ghettos below known as "the Downside." They were policed by the Wingmen, resembling Hawkman and Hawkwoman from Earth.
Tensions were high between the imperialistic Thanagar and what it believed was the more technologically advanced Rann. Over the years, Thanagarian agents had tried unsuccessfully to obtain the secrets of the planet Rann's Zeta Beam technology, which was used for near-instantaneous teleportation across vast distances of space.. Fearful of Earth's growing metahuman population, Thanagar would later the Dominator led "Alien Alliance" in a failed attempt to conquer Earth.
In the past year, Rann was threatened by the cosmic vampire known as Starbreaker. Rann and its trinary star system Alpha Centauri had to be transported into another universe to save itself. The device used was a variant of the Zeta Beam, called the Omega Beam, which could be used on planetary sized objects. After the defeat of Starbreaker, a group of Thanagarian religious zealots sabotaged the Omega Beam device, the planet Rann appeared in the Polaris system, rather than Alpha Centauri. Their hope had been to instigate a war between the two worlds.
Believed to be knocked from its orbit by the appearance of Rann, Thanagar plunged towards its sun. It would later be learned that Thanagar had actually been shoved out of orbit by the massively powerful Superboy-Prime as part of a larger scheme.
While Thanagar’s very atmosphere ignited, starships from the L.E.G.I.O.N. as well as members of the Green Lantern Corps and the Omega Men tried to assist in the evacuation, but there were too many to rescue. Rann was now Thanagar's closest planetary neighbor and the survivors made their way to the displaced world. Tensions were too high, and war finally broke out, with factions of Thanagarians dedicated to liquidating Rann's population and claiming the world as New Thanagar. Matters were complicated when the near-omnipotent being known as Onimar Synn used the death and disaster to fuel his bid for universal conquest. Though Onimar Synn would be defeated, the war itself expanded as worlds chose either the side of Rann or Thanagar.
Isamot Kol was a Lizarkon downsider enlisted into the Imperial Thanagarian Army. Whether Isamot Kol joined the army of his own volition or was conscripted has not been revealed, but due to his intense loyalty and sense of honor he considered anyone opposing Thanagar to be his enemy.
When his squad was surrounded and outnumbered by Rannians, Kol's commanding officer gave the order to surrender. Disgusted by what he perceived to be an act of cowardice, Isamot Kol killed his superior and led the Thanagarian squad to victory against the Rannian squadron. His fellow soldiers, no doubt grateful for Kol's actions, tried to defend him claiming their superior was slain in battle, but Kol refused to lie and took responsibility for his own actions. In the Imperial Thanagarian Army, that meant treason, and the punishment for treason was death.
Isamot Kol was brought to a military prison in Ranagar City, Rann for execution. At the exact moment he was to be beheaded, an Oan power ring saved his life and freed him from his captors. The ring told him he had been chosen to join the Green Lantern Corps and he would be taken to Oa for training.
He would learn another veteran of the Rann-Thanagar war, a Rannian soldier named Vath Sarn had also been selected for the Corps. Much to their mutual disgust, the enemies were to be partners in Space Sector 2682. Senior Green Lanterns Kilowog and Salakk would allow for any fighting between the two trainees. While Vath Sarn seemed to accept that their new roles as Green Lanterns had put the war behind them, Isamot Kol did not. When the war spilled over into other sectors, threatening Green Lantern Mogo, Isamot argued unsuccessfully to be sent back into the war they were familiar with.
They were each given a temporary badge of office and sent to the edge of their sector to divert ships away from star 38 which like many other stars had recently shown signs of instability. When an Okaaran hospital ship refused to change course and fired on him, Isamot Kol threatened them, but any threat paled to the supernova event that claimed the star and developed into a black hole. Kilowog arrived and was able to save the hospital ship, but the two trainee Green Lanterns were sucked in.
Brought to the forbidden Vega system in Space Sector 2828, they found themselves within a Spider Guild construction of massive proportions. The Spider Guild had been the cause of the many recent supernovas that destroyed planets and slayed the Green Lanterns as they tried in vain to save the nearby worlds. Kilowog followed them through the black hole, and soon after they were joined by senior Green Lanterns Guy Gardner and Kyle Rayner as the two were attempting to rescue Lantern recruit Soranik Natu of Korugar. The Green Lanterns managed to escape both the Spider Guild and a group of bounty hunters. They soon found themselves back on Oa, part of the Corps successful attempt to ward off a Spider Guild attack on the planet itself.
It is presumed that Isamot Kol had stood with the Green Lantern Corps in defense of Oa against Superboy-Prime. Thirty-two Green Lanterns gave their lives before Superboy-Prime's defeat and capture on the surface of Mogo
One year later, though most Thanagarians and Rannians were still hostile, Isamot Kol and Vath Sarn had slowly become friends, but for Vath’s personal anger management problems. After striking Isamot, Vath Sarn went to Mogo for reflection. Vath Sarn would come to believe Isamot was neglecting his duties to their sector as Isamot was spending increasingly more time on Thanagar, helping his fellow Lizarkons. This was due to the Lizarkons' instinctive need to create a nest and mate.
Shortly after Vath Sarn arrived on Thanagar, a Citadel battle fleet started orbital bombardment. Vath Sarn went to fend off the attack, only to find him imperiled. Isamot Kol had to decide to honor his duties as a Green Lantern, rather than to that of his species. The two chased the Citadellians back to the Vega System where they had to give up pursuit. Isamot Kol arrived back on Thanagar too late. Qalyra had found another mate.
At Vath's insistence, Isamot went to Mogo for rest, but he was disturbed by the odd behavior of the Green Lantern of Uxor in Space Sector 2828, known as the Green Man. Isamot Kol excused himself and left Mogo. He did not realize that the Green Man and Mogo had been infected by the sentient micro-virus Despotellis, a member of the Sinestro Corps

Powers
Known Powers: Green Lantern Power Ring
- Natural Durability and Life Support: When wearing the ring, the wielder has an increased durability and recieves life support functions. This allows the wielder to be about as tough as a iron wall. This can also be increased by surrounding oneself with a force field (found below). The life support function of the ring naturally protects the user from sickness, disease, gases, viruses, etc. Theoretically, a ring wielder could use the ring as his/her/its sole source of life support.
- Energy Constructs: The primary function of the Power Ring is to provide a weapon capable of transforming the wearer's thoughts into physical constructs through the wearer's strength of willpower. A Green Lantern can create any particular items or construct that they can imagine as long as they have the willpower necessary to will it into existence. The constructs are made out of green energy, which is a tangible form of pure willpower, and they exist only as long as a Green Lantern is fueling it with their willpower. Items created by the rings are not indestructible and are only as powerful as the willpower of the Green Lantern creating them.
- Energy Absorption and Projection: By will, the ring cab absorb all forms of energy. This energy is not use to recharge the ring, as only the Power Battery can do that. This energy can be released however. The ring can also project any form of energy as a blast. It can even simulate radiation, including Kryptonite.
- Flight: The Power Ring grants a Green Lantern the ability of flight. Not only is a Green Lantern capable of flight while in an atmosphere, they are capable of traveling through outer space without risk to themselves. While traveling through space, the ring creates a force field around the wearer, which protects them and allows them to breathe normally. The ring also protects the wearer from the hazards of the void of space including filtration of stellar radiation and microscopic particulate matter, which would ordinarily be fatal, should the space debris strike the ring wielder at high speeds. An atmosphere appropriate to the ring wielder's biology is created inside the force field, body temperature is maintained and waste products are removed. Gravitational stresses, which could cause injury, are stabilized for the ring wielder. Flight is possible at velocities exceeding light speed. In atmospheres, air friction is not a hindrance, since heat is either absorbed or reflected by the ring's field. The power ring grants its wearer access to wormholes in space, enabling the ring wielder to rapidly cut time and distance needed for transport.
- Force Fields: In addition to the natural durability that every Green Lanter has, the ring can also increase the wearer's protection be creating a skin-tight force field, seen as a green glow surrounding the Green Lantern. Adding this skin-armor takes a conscious choice, and allows the wearer to take massive amounts of damage. In addtion to the skin-armor, force fields can be expanded to protect others, or separate force bubbles or shields can be created.
- Uniforms: The Green Lantern's uniform is not made out of fabric. It is created by the Power Ring whenever the wearer wills to wear it. It automatically appears over the wearer's normal clothing, and vanishes when the wearer wills to return to their civilian attire. Each Green Lantern is able to adjust their uniform to fit their own needs, personalities and whims.
- Communication: The Power Rings can be used as communicators between Power Ring wearers. Typically a green "hologram" of the Green Lantern you are communicating with appears from within the ring.
- Spirit Travel: Allows the user to separate an "energy self" from the ring-wielder. This energy self can travel billions of times faster than light and perceive surroundings normally.
- Regeneration and Healing: Speeds up the user's natural healing ability 16 times normal, and allows the wielder to heal others.
- Scanning: The ring has a wide range of detection abilities. If it can be conceived it can probably be detected. Most normal electromagnetic phenomena are within the range of the ring, including radio, television, infrared, ultraviolet, and high frequency band communications.
- Dispersal: The Power Ring allows the wearer to pass through certain solid objects, such as walls. Which objects that are not penetrable are not known, but it may depend upon the strength of the wearer's willpower and the density of the object's molecular structure.
- Invisibility and Light Refraction: A ring wielder can render himself invisible by willing the ring to bend light waves around his form, as well as that of the power ring.
- Mind Tampering: As the power ring relies on thought and will to operate, mind tampering is not impossible, the real difficulty lies in properly applying the power. There lies a risk of catastrophic damage to the mind should mistakes be made. A ring wielder can use the power ring to control minds, or even erase portions of an individual's memories. The power ring can also be used to beam information from the ring wielder to another being. Green Lanterns have used this technique to share information regarding their enemies during combat situations.
- Emergency Beacon: A Green Lantern in distress can use his/her/its power ring as an emergency beacon. The alert can be directed to a Green Lantern's neighboring sector, or it can be a Corps-wide alert.
- Homing Beacon: A homing beacon in the power ring can lead one Green Lantern to another.
The power ring can be ordered to disguise itself to elude power ring wielding trackers by willing the power ring to keep their location a secret. - Time Travel: The ring wielder can travel through time, though the further forward in time a ring wielder travels, the more willpower it takes.
- Power Ring Duplication: Power Rings are capable of automatically duplicating themselves. Each duplicate typically shares the qualities and capabilities of the original ring. Their ability to inflict damage is limited because each duplicate still requires to be recharged by a personal power battery.
- Omni-Power: All the above powers are actual the most common uses of the Power Ring. The ring can do pretty much anything, based on the wielder's willpower. For instance if needed, the wearer could fuel his willpower straight into strength. Hal Jordan has done this and was nearly as strong as Superman. Less frequently used capabilities include splitting atoms and manipulating sub-atomic particles (effectively producing new elements), and simulating forms of radiation (such as that emitted by green Kryptonite.
- Artificial Intelligence: Every Power Ring has a connection to the Central Power Battery on Oa which allows the rings to tap into an Artificial Intelligence (AI). The wearer typically interfaces with the AI by addressing the ring verbally, all though it is presumed that the wearer can also silently communicate with the ring through their willpower. The ring can either respond aloud or communicate silently to the wearer.
The Ring's AI has access to a large database of information which can be crucial to the success of a Green Lantern's mission. Upon request, all though occasionally without prompting, the ring provides the wearer with important information pertaining to a given situation and may also suggest a useful course of action.
The AI can also perform valuable scans of the wearer's surroundings. The ring apparently passively scans an area of approximately 100 meters around the wearer at all times and warns the wearer of any potential threats. A Green Lantern can actively command the ring's AI to run a scan of a person, place or thing and to provide information on what it has learned.
The AI is capable of translating nearly any alien language into the language of the ring's wearer.
- Recharging the Power Ring: the Green Lantern's power ring must be periodically replenished for repeated use. While in the past the ring required to be recharged every 24 hours, the current set of rings hold their charge until it has been depleted by the wearer, which typically occurs every twenty for hours with regular use. A Green Lantern can address their ring's AI and request a power check in order to determine whether or not they require to recharge their ring.
The power rings are recharged by the Green Lantern placing their rings into their personal Power Battery and reciting their oath. The Power Battery's themselves can be disguised and hidden by being turned invisible by its Green Lantern owner. - Yellow Impurity: For centuries, the Green Lantern's Power Rings were incapable of working on anything colored yellow. Fear exists on an emotional electromagnetic spectrum as the color yellow, whereas its opposite emotion, pure willpower, is green. However, experienced Green Lanterns, such as those who fought Parallax, are able to disable the weaknesses by feeling fear and overcoming it.
- Psychic Backlash: Despite even the greatest of wills, sometimes a ring construct can be broken. It may seem a mere annoyance to a ring wielder, but in reality it could prove quite deadly. A ring wielder links his/her/itself to the power, a psychic backlash occurs immediately after the disruption of a ring generated construct. The backlash can be very painful and disorienting but leaves no permanent damage to the ring wielder. The real danger to the ring wielder is the split seconds of incapacitation, leaving him/her/it vulnerable to attack.
Known Abilities: Besides the powers granted above by the ring, Isamot is slightly stronger, faster, and more durable than the average human due to his alien nature. He has around human intellect and reflexes however, so he is still susceptable to tricks.
