History
Origins
Lori Zechlin was a goth teen who lived with her father and drug addict mother. Neither Lori nor her father (identified as John) suspected Mrs. Zechlin's addiction because she abused stolen prescription pharmaceuticals supplied by local drug dealers.
One day, overwhelmed by shame, Mrs. Zechlin put on her best dress, took an overdose of drugs, and drowned herself in the pool. Lori discovered the body when she came home from school. Lori discovered later that same night that she had a mystical ability – she could "borrow" the magical powers of other superheroes or supervillains. Although she could not use the powers as well as their owners and had little control over when she could take them or how long she could use them, Lori (taking the name Black Alice) formulated a plan to avenge her mother's death and punish the prescription drug traffickers whom she saw as above the law.
Lori's father, shattered and slipping into depression, became a recluse. He tried to pretend for Lori's sake that nothing was wrong. Her mother's death also distressed Lori, but she was aware of the change in her father and assigned herself the role of caregiver. Her grades started to slip, and she became alienated from her peers. Her primary social group, a Wiccan circle, expelled her because she was emitting "black energy" after her mother's death (in actuality, the circle's leader – her best friend, Dawn – was jealous of Lori's real and growing powers).
Having recently left Gotham City following the destruction of their clock tower headquarters, the Birds of Prey were traveling the country by jet in order to identify and help previously unknown metahumans. Oracle had become aware of Lori's power, but not her specific abilities. She sent Huntress, disguised as a school teacher, to keep an eye on Lori and offer counseling, while Black Canary was tasked with keeping surveillance on all of Lori's activities. The goal was to determine the specific nature and strength of Lori's powers.
While Black Canary watched, Lori abruptly left her boyfriend, Kyle, when Doctor Fate's power manifested. She decided to use it before its subsidence, and sought out a trio of suspected drug dealers. When Lori seemed intent to use lethal force, Black Canary intervened to save the lives of the three men. Doctor Fate's power faded, and Lori fled the scene, tailed by Black Canary. Suddenly manifesting Zatanna's powers, Lori waylaid Canary and escaped.
Black Canary and Huntress united to tail Kyle in the hopes of rediscovering Lori, and instead found that Kyle was two-timing Lori with Dawn. Lori discovered the same thing shortly afterwards and prepared to destroy a shopping mall (having now manifested the powers of Black Adam) in her efforts to avenge herself on Kyle. Black Canary was able to bring her down in an all-out brawl, but it was Huntress who brought a stop to Lori's rampage by presenting a contrite Dawn.
Oracle turned Lori over to the care of the real Doctor Fate, where she would receive guidance in the use of her powers.
Day of Vengeance
Black Alice made her second appearance in the Day of Vengeance miniseries. The Shadowpact asks for her aid in confronting the Spectre and Eclipso. Over her father’s objections and reservations, she goes with the team. Despite her power and efforts, she, along with the Shadowpact and the Phantom Stranger, does little more than delay the Spectre. After witnessing both the death of the wizard Shazam and the destruction of the Rock of Eternity at the hands of the Spectre, she sees the destruction this wreaks on Gotham City and elsewhere. She declines an offer to join the team, choosing instead to return to her father and her hometown.
Later, in the Villains United: Infinite Crisis Special, she helps to combat the global prison break that Alexander Luthor, Jr. orchestrates.
Current Status
One Year Later Lori is approached by Talia al Ghul, Felix Faust, and Cheetah. They attempt to get her to join the Society, offering both training and the resurrection of her mother, having exchanged the souls of many Society members to the demon Neron. The Birds of Prey attempt to intervene. A frustrated and enraged Black Alice (who almost hangs Black Canary to death using a channeled Wonder Woman golden lasso) teleports everyone to the outskirts of Dayton and states that she just wishes to be left alone. She returns home with her parents, her mother apparently fully resurrected, but living in a constant-shock state (she barely speaks, mechanically doing house chores). Her life still goes downhill, with her father turning alcoholic again due to his wife's condition, popular boys and girls bullying her and mocking her lifestyle, until she summons the traveling helmet of Doctor Fate, in an attempt to tame its powers. It is only when the helmet starts to punish everyone who wrongs her, even her loved ones, that Lori realizes that she doesn't need more power to attain happiness and sets the Helmet free, spending more time to help rehabilitate her father.
Currently as Lori’s powers continue to manifest and grow, she is still considered to be potentially the most powerful and dangerous teenagers on the planet. Lori has yet to grasp this idea and still is unable to gain complete and total control over her powers. She works on her own, focusing on dealing with the drug lords in her city rather than assimilate herself into any other heroic group activities. Lori as of now is no threat to the heroic or villainous spectrums of the world, and seems to show no intent of joining either side.
Lori is still under the tutelage of Dr. Fate and continues to nurture her powers everyday.

Powers
Known Powers: Black Alice is able to temporarily borrow the magical powers of other mystical heroes and villains. Her ability to temporarily usurp magical powers of any being allow her to wield their complete spectrum of powers. Under the constant training of Dr. Fate, Black Alice has been able to better control her powers and also gone so far that when she temporarily borrows power, her powers have no effect on the user that she takes it from. So therefore, when she borrows someone’s powers they do not experience a loss. There is no limit in terms of distance between Lori and the target that she desires to take powers from, the only limit is that for powers that are from “newer” targets, Lori must have complete visual contact with that individual, otherwise she will borrow some random user’s powers. Assuming she wanted a certain power, she can tap into the powers of the targets that she has already absorbed. Additionally, when Alice borrows an ability, her clothing partially transforms to somewhat resemble her target. Finally, Alice is also able to absorb the powers of more than one hero, but is limited at two.
Known Abilities:
Strength Level: Lori’s strength level is moderately low. It only increases when she powers abilities that are magically obtained, for example when absorbing a Marvel Family member’s powers, she is able to lift 10 times what she would normally lift.

Characteristics
Age: 17
Height: 5’4”
Weight: 96 lbs
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Black
Unusual Features: None
Personality:
- Cynical: Lori hasn’t had the best of experiences in her life, especially since she’s tried so hard to fit in but only failed. Lori’s tried the whole, tricking yourself into believing in happy endings, but that hasn’t worked out so well thus far. She’s had her occasional highs, but any sort of happiness has been elusive at best. She tries her best to be positive, assuming the situation calls for it, but overall, Lori’s level of expectations is terminally low.
- Tough: Lori is what you would call a 'tough chick', working her way slowly to 'tough broad'. She doesn't make a huge show of it, she's not out to prove to the world her capacity for ass-kickery, and most of the time remains nice, or even downright sweet... But the fact remains that she will simply *not* take your crap if she doesn't have to, or if she doesn't think she deserves it. She's not afraid to talk back, and is quite ready to inflict physical harm if she gets riled up enough. Unfortunately, given some issues built up by past experiences, if you know what you're doing, it's not actually all that *hard* to make her think she deserves whatever it is you're barking at her. But most people don't, so most people get an earful.
- Protective: Friends are hard to come by for people like Lori, so needless to say, the few she's been able to get ahold of in her life, she intends on keeping. If someone tries to do something to hurt one of her friends, and there's ANYTHING she can do about it, it's more than likely she'll do it, damn the cost.
- Mouthy: Pushing people's buttons is always a favorite past-time. Lori has a lot of anger and frustration buried inside. It's had years to build up. She won't acknowledge it, even to herself, but it needs to go somewhere. Usually it ends up aimed at whoever happens to be closest. Lori will tell you she's just honest and outspoken. Says exactly what she thinks, no holds barred. Which, to a certain extent, is true. Unfortunately, what she's usually thinking is fairly pissy, and almost always comes out in as negative a way as possible. She's sarcastic, moody, and rarely has a gentle word for anyone.
- Ruthless: When she fights, she fights to smash her opponent. If she's put into a situation where it's hurt or be hurt, or when she's angered enough, she will do whatever it takes to come out on top. If she's forced into fighting to protect someone, she'll do what damage she must, and walk away with no remorse. As far as she's concerned, she's just cleaning up garbage. If she hurts, either physically or verbally, someone who's innocent, she'll feel bad about it later, but has a tough time apologizing. That would be a show of weakness, and she's terrified of showing weakness to anyone.
- Self Conflicted: The world doesn't accept those who are different easily. Lori looks like a kid, has the mouth of a Marine drill sergeant, and fights like a Fury unleashed. She's learned to expect that the world will demand that she fight for everything that she gets. For the most part, she doesn't mind. The adrenaline rush has a hold on her that would be difficult to break. Still, there are times when she wonders if there wouldn't be another way. If maybe she's not making a mistake. She doesn't allow these doubts to come often, or to gain too much of a hold on her, but they are there. Lori wants friends, but she's afraid to trust them. She wants to be accepted, and liked, but is afraid to open up enough to allow people inside. She has to be tough, constantly, or risk getting hurt. More than that, though, is what Lori thinks about herself. She'd never admit it out loud, not sober, anyhow, but Lori despises herself. She'll fight anyone who suggests that she's not as good as they are. She won't tolerate people who treat her like trash, but beneath all of her posturing, that's what she's really afraid of. That they're right.
- Stubborn: Admit she's wrong? Lori? Nahhh. Can't happen. That would be admitting a weakness, and by now it should be obvious that that is not something Lori ever does willingly. She's not stubborn to a fault. She can be persuaded that she's wrong, if the other person is patient enough to take their time and not lose their temper with her. It’s unlikely that she'll ever be a gracious loser though. She hates conceding a point to anyone.
- Determined: This is likely the one trait that defines Lori more than any other. No matter how bad her internal fears may get, and no matter what other people think of her, Lori is determined to rise above it. She's determined to show the world that she can not only succeed, but thrive, no matter what it throws at her. If she could believe that she could rise higher than is possible with her fighting and her work for the criminals and mob bosses, there's no telling where her determination could carry her, unfortunately she hasn't learned to believe in herself quite that far yet.
Additionally, when Alice borrows an ability, her clothing partially transforms to somewhat resemble her target. Finally, Alice is also able to absorb the powers of more than one hero, but is limited at two.
Known Abilities:
- Brawling: Having absolutely no professional fighting experience prior to the discovery of her abilities, Black Alice possesses absolutely no style of fighting or any degree in martial arts. Of course, that doesn’t mean that she doesn’t know how to throw a punch or kick someone in the butt. Her fighting may not be up to par with most people, but at least she knows enough to ensure she’s not someone’s punching bag. Even without much experience or knowledge on fighting, Alice can handle herself, well enough to ensure she stays alive.
- Streetwise: Hanging with the wrong crowds have introduced Lori to different parts of the city. She’s learned through her own teenage experience how cities work, and where to go for certain things or information. She knows how to deal with people on the streets and knows how to carry herself. In short, Lori’s obtained enough common sense to get some information off the streets, and to make sure that she doesn’t get her own head blown off.
- Arcane Lore: Having involved herself in the Wiccan Arts and now being trained by Dr. Fate, it’s no surprise that Lori has picked something up. Although her knowledge may be intermediate or basic in the eyes of others, it’s enough to help her understand the magical world around her. Through her training with Dr. Fate, Lori has come to understand many different languages as well as the arcane abilities of many other magicians.
- Wizardy: With the absorption of another individual’s powers, Lori immediately gains the basic knowledge on how their powers work. In addition to that she retains that knowledge just for keepsake. Call it a natural ability or pure luck, but Lori knows how to work her magic and with great ease. That’s probably why she’s considered to be a potentially dangerous being.
- Academics: Lori knows about as much as a bright high school student would be expected to know. She actually has the potential to be in AP, and she actually absorbs most of what she hears in class effortlessly. She intentionally goofs off and doesn't apply herself.
- Cooking: A secret ability of Lori’s is that she’s one heck of a cook and baker. She knows how to add her own magic touch to her homemade creations and can seduce anyone with her cooking. How she obtained such a talent is unknown, but Lori’s lucky she has it. At least she’s able to give her disorderly family a hearty meal.
Strength Level: Lori’s strength level is moderately low. It only increases when she powers abilities that are magically obtained, for example when absorbing a Marvel Family member’s powers, she is able to lift 10 times what she would normally lift.
Weaknesses:
- Human: Black Alice, beneath all the magic and black make up is a human. A weak teenage human, whose only athletic work out include running away from the cops or school security. She’s extremely vulnerable to anything that hurts/ kills people, be it physical, mental or through any other substance. If one can get past the power level that she’s able to work upon, then they could easily snap that little neck of hers.
- Power Drawbacks: Along with the power gain, Black Alice also gains the magical weaknesses that affect the targets. For example, if she borrows Zatanna’s powers, then her weakness is that she needs to properly recite the incantation. Although she can wield great power, she is drawn back by whatever flaws in power her targets suffer from.
- Time limits: The time limit that Alice has on her powers is unknown, however the longest thus far has been an hour. Despite this, Black Alice’s powers are capable of diminishing in the middle of a heated battle or even in the middle of its usage. Factors that contribute to the time limits are unknown, and even though Alice can will the powers away, she is unable to control how long they stay.
- Power Usage Limits: Another limit to Black Alice's powers is that she can only use one individual's powers in a day. For example, if she has already tapped into Dr. Fate's powers, then she cannot use that power until the next day. Since the time limits to her power usage is random, this can be a great drawback because it forces Alice to constantly have to shift through different powers, as well as adapt to any news ones that she may acquire.
