History
Preface
The planet Talok VIII — one of several inhabited planets in that system — features a race of blue-skinned humanoids living a generally sub-industrial, tribal life. Prominent on the planet is the Mallor family line, menbers of which have served as planetary protectors for centuries. They are catered to by a sect of monks, who train them extensively in hand-to-hand combat. In addition, the protector possesses shadow projection powers, apparently granted by the accumulated souls of the Mallor ancestors. (The power is both genetic and magical. It is a harbored ability that is awakened during the training of becoming the Champion or Protector of Talok VIII.)
Tasmia Mallor is the latest in the line of protectors, inheriting the role as a child when the previous protector, her mother, was slain. Trained by the monks, her first act as protector was to attack invading aliens… who unfortunately happened to be a delegation from the United Planets. Embarrassed by her actions, the Talok VIII government sent her to Earth to jon the Legion of Super-Heroes, although Umbra tells the story somewhat differently.
Umbra was accepted into the Legion during open tryouts. Despite her abrasive, superior personality, she has served the Legion well. As a member of the team sent to investigate the Fires of Creation space anomaly, her powers were somewhat strengthened. When the Blight invaded Earth, Umbra was one of their earliest captives, and the things they forced her to do while under their control haunted her for months afterward. Umbra was one of the “Lost” Legionnaires, sent through a rift in space to distant part of the universe, where her Blight trauma and her personality problems caused significant friction with her teammates.
Empowerment
Tasmia Mallor was the latest in a long line of Shadow Champions of Talok VIII. At birth she was taken from her mother, the then-current Champion, in a bid to ensure that no single accident or attack could ever claim both of them, and saw her only seven times during her lifetime, all at solemn ceremonies in which they were forbidden to speak. As she grew up, she was raised by priests and was trained in combat and drilled in the order of her bloodline. She loved it.
Finally, one day, her mother was killed in battle and she was brought before the leaders of Talok VIII's twelve tribes - the only time they would ever congregate peacefully - before entering the Shadow Cave, where she met the spirits of her mother and the other prior Champions. After they chastised her for never wondering how her mother died, she took to heart their counsel to protect Talok VIII (but not their warning against egocentrism) and they told her to Go In Power.
On leaving the cave, she found the inhabitants of Talok VIII on their knees, waiting for a sign - which she provided when she let the Shadows loose. After that, she became the Champion, using her position to give orders to leaders and priests, all in maintenance of the Old Ways. This lasted until the ship came.
The United Planets ship came in peace, proselytizing the benefits of U.P. membership. Sent to greet the "invaders," she understood none of it, and she set about dismantling the "hideous" ship and crew. Despite their best efforts, she caused an explosion that caused the ship's landing gear to collapse. After that, the priests (who had already been harboring doubts about the "zealot") kept her drugged until UP entry negotiations were complete. Profoundly disturbed by the cultural influx and Talok's "capitulation", she was eventually "dismissed", and told to study the galaxy to "open her mind."
Legion
She eventually made her way to Earth, and entered the Legion tryouts and was accepted as Umbra, although her curt attitude irritated Sensor.
As part of the Legion, she fought Mordru, and later played a key part in saving Wildfire - despite, after her initial fierce compassion, being disgusted at the thought of the forcible integration of his two original souls.
Blighted
Far later, the Blight enslaved most of Earth, including all but a few of the Legionnaires. Umbra was not among these escapees. When she was freed, she began to have a mental breakdown, prompted not only by the fact of her enslavement and what she'd been forced to do, but by the fact that the Blight's touching of her mind had meant that she'd enjoyed it. Shortly thereafter, she became one of the Legionnaires lost through a space rift and catapulted into another galaxy.
There, she became harder and colder than ever in lieu of breaking down completely and showing the fear that now guided her, while the voices of her ancestors from the shadow became faint and hard to understand. Then Saturn Girl tried to telepathically calm her, and it all went wrong - a telepathic matrix over a whole planet interfered with her powers, and the result left Saturn Girl in a coma, a shadow-creature fueled by Umbra and Saturn Girl's combined pain and fear loose on the ship - and an Umbra completely without pain or anxiety, leaving only anger and arrogant self-confidence.
She went down to the planet, where she began to fight Singularity (a Superman-like being), for whom the telepathic illusion which had caused the trouble was being maintained (to keep him from causing trouble on his race's real planet). When Ultra Boy and Monstress went down to get her, she began to fight them too. Finally, she was knocked out by Singularity while the Legion, having captured the shadow-creature and realized what it was, knocked out the illusion causing Singularity to go looking for his original planet. Then Brainiac 5 managed to restore Umbra and Saturn Girl's minds, and Umbra finally broke down in a crying heap.
Recovery
After this she finally began to heal from everything that had happened to her - until, after they managed to return to UP space, her power mysteriously cut out. To find out what had happened, she finally returned to Talok VIII for the first time since her dismissal. There she found a planet completely cloaked in shadow, and a shadow which knocked her out. Shadow Maven, one of the priests who had trained her, found her and told her that after her loss in the rift, they had believed her dead and managed to empower her "distant cousin Grev" with the shadows through the use of technology, and had him cloak the planet completely, withdrawing from the United Planets.
Angry at the thought that just as she had accepted the galaxy Talok had turned away from it, she went to confront Grev. The shadow gradually leeched back to her, until she split open the suit Grev used to control the shadow - and found a withered corpse inside, as he had been unable to withstand being a conduit for the Shadow, while the suit ran on its last programmed directives. She cast the shadow-cloak from the planet, and spent some time there before returning to the Legion.
Blast to the Past
Curiosity was definitely a killer for Tasmia, it was her curiosity, along with another Legionnaire's that brought her to release the powerful dark sorceress known as Mordru. Despite her attempts to bring him down on her own, and hopefully fix the problem, but Mordru was too powerful, and thus wreaked havoc within the Legion Clubhouse. Thereafter, Mordru simply vanished, his whereabouts were unknown by the Legion.
Tasmia tried to explain herself, and was forgiven by some members for her daft action in releasing Mordru, but an apology would not make everything come undone. The Legion had to find Mordru, and imprison him once again.
While predicting certain whereabouts of Mordru, the idea came up that he may return to the 21st century to seek revenge for the one that had imprisoned him. Superman. When that idea was widely accepted by the other members, Karate Kid, Cosmic Boy, Apparition, Saturn Girl and Lightning Lad set off in a time capsule to return to the 21st century and warn Superman of the return of Mordru.
This left the other Legionnaires to search for Mordru in their own time, but alas there was no evidence found on his current whereabouts.
Shock was brought upon the Legion when a babbling Garth returned to the Legion. Apparently, Mordru had performed some mind wipe or cast a spell over him upon his return to the future. The mind blank members was not the only problem the Legion had, but also the loss of Val Armorr, Tinya Wazzo, Rokk Krinn, and Irma Ardern. Querl informed the team that he was still trapped within the past, the 21st century to be exact, and Brainiac himself left to go investigate.
Days later, the Legion heard nothing from Querl or Val. Garth eventually returned to normal and explained what happened. The Legion was shocked to hear that Mordru had already visited that time period and had sabotaged the team when they made an attempt to return. Many assumptions began to go around, and the Legion had lost core members, Irma, Querl, Tinya, Val, and Querl
The Legion could only assume that nothing drastic had happened in the past just yet, since everything in the 31st century seemed normal. Garth who assumed leadership once again argued that they could not travel back in time for the consequences might be too dire. The Legion was at a standstill, and were all basing their hopes on the fact that the heroes of the 21st century would deal with Mordru in there time, before he made any drastic changes to their time period.
Tasmia was hit harder than this by most members. Mostly because she felt that she was the cause of all this. Since the other Legion members had rejected the idea of Time Travel, Tasmia took it upon herself to travel back to the 21st century to retrieve Val and Querl, and possibly help defeat Mordru in that time before he caused any big problems.
With the aid and support of Jo Nah, or Ultraboy, Tasmia retrieved one of Brainiac's Time Capsules and set her coordinates for 21st century Metropolis. She could only hope that Querl and Val were still alive and that she would be able to find them. Bidding farewell to Jo Nah, Tasmia disappeared venturing back to the 21st century.
Like Querl's time capsule, Tasmia discovered that upon arrival, it broke down having suffered under the pressures of time travel. Inevitably, Tasmia was now stuck in the 21st century, but that was the goal here, she needed to stay as long as she could in the 21stcentury to find her friends, and to save the future from Mordru.
Characteristics
Age: 22
Height: 5'8”
Weight: 130 lbs
Eyes: Black
Hair: Black
Character Type: Alien
Unusual Features: Like all Talokians, Tasmia has light blue skin and pointed ears.
Personality: Tasmia was born in a world without paternal affection, and breed within the chaos of war and fighting. She no doubt has the strong and solid heart of a warrior; who is willing to use any means necessary to deal with conflicts or problems that threatens anything that she is willing to protect. She loves combat, and enjoys any chance that she receives to be engaged in the heat of a battle. Additionally, she has a knack for outperforming maneuvers when in the middle of a fight. She possesses a loyal and courageous heart, but despite all this, she has proven to have a mean streak.
Tasmia is a slight egomaniac, this deriving from her own personal abilities, and the royalty that she holds in her blood. Initially, she allowed such “big-headedness” to cloud her thoughts, however over the years, and during her time with the Legion, she has grown softer towards other people's thoughts, feelings, or opinions. She holds pride in herself, and where she comes from, but it has dulled down to a level where she does not appear as curt or distasteful as she once did.
As her name suggests (Umbra), Tasmia is rather dark, in the sense that she is highly independent and is private. Being raised in the manner that she was has brought Tasmia to be less dependent than most people, along with her warrior like attitude, she possesses a rather high level of will power or self control. Also, with the recovery from her mental breakdown after being “Blighted”, Tasmia has grown to hold an even higher control over her own emotions. She keeps to herself, and withholds information that she feel does not need to be discussed among others.
Sometimes, she's deemed as a mystery because of her “closed” personality, and is often seen as “pessimistic” because of her annoyance towards the “positive” or upbeat attitudes of her fellow Legionnaries. In truth however, Tasmia simply goes by the code of “doing” rather then “believing”.
It's often mistaken that Tasmia has an “ice box” for a heart, but in reality she can be as kind and compassionate if she feels that the partner that she chooses is worthy of her love, admiration, or respect. Val has witnessed her sensitive moments when she has been neglected by a loved one, and her worry towards those that she cares for. She takes the idea of a relationship with compassionate feelings very seriously, and close to her heart because she was never exposed to one when she was a child.
Tasmia has also become very open-minded towards the reality that is throughout the galaxy, other people's opinions, and the feelings of other individuals. The once pompous and closed-minded Tasmia would have never heeded words of advice or suggestions as she does now, which in turn is a good thing, not only as a Legionnaire, but also as the representative for her home planet.
All in all, Tasmia has a very headstrong, passionate and take-charge personality. She is a warrior like woman with a soft heart beneath her tough exterior and independent mindset. She is intuitive, though her sense of curiosity can lead her into trouble at times. She thrives in excitement and constant adventure, making her feel more whole and alive.

Powers
Known Powers: Umbra can cast dark fields preventing all light from reaching an area from outside. These can either be complete, effectively rendering useless all light sources within the area, or hollow to allow the interior to be lit. She can also solidify these fields, to use as a more direct weapon.
- Dark Force: The Dark Force is a powerful extra dimensional energy force which most super beings with “dark” based powers derive their power from. The Dark Force can be manipulated in many different ways, only by beings who are attuned to it. It is similar to the Shadowlands however possessing a more powerful and dangerous level of “darkness”, the reason it is much more dangerous is because the beings who are “connected” with it have a possibility of being completely consumed or controlled by it.
- Darkness Constructs: One of the primary abilities of Umbra's darkness control is the ability to transform her thoughts into physical 'darkness' constructs. She can create any particular construct that she can imagine as long as she has the willpower necessary. The constructs are made out of dark energy, and they exist only as long as a she is fueling it with her willpower. Constructs created by her are not indestructible and are only as powerful as the willpower she has over them.
- Darkness Conversion: A special ability that allows Tasmia to literally take dark energy and convert it into a sort of fuel or strengthen herself (similar to power absorption), by converting the Dark Force energy, Tasmia is also able to increase her level of durability to super human levels where she can become invulnerable to bullets or other solid projectiles. The drawback to this ability however is that Darkness Conversion takes up most of her dark wielding abilities and concentration, so when she is using this ability, she cannot use any other “Dark Energy” based attacks.
- Dark Fields: Tasmia's ability to manipulate the Dark Force allows her to create fields of complete and total darkness. The darkness that she creates are 100 times darker than night and are completely impenetrable by light. The Dark Fields consist of negative energy which absorbs all visible light frequences and surrounding parts of the spectrum such as infrared and ultraviolet light. The field can also partially absorb sound waves, making it an effective cloak. These Dark Fields can expand, it is recorded in Talokian history that the they can expand these fields to cover an entire planet (specifically Earth) and blot out the sun. These fields can work to retain light, or to block it out. Additionally, they can be solidified to become a more offensive weapon.
- Dark Force Weapons: In addition to creating fields of darkness, Tasmia is able to harness the energy from the Dark Force and solidify it to any shape or form that she desires. This in turn allows her to create rather effective melee weapons. The only limitation that Tasmia has on creating weapons from darkness is her own imagination.
- Dark Force Blasts: By manipulating masses of the Dark Force, Tasmia is able to gather up the dark energy and release it in the form of blasts of energy. If dealing within the daylight or in a brightly lit area, so it can be minimized to a short blast. However, when dealing within the darkness, these blasts of dark energy can be quite dangerous, or near to deadly.
- Dark Energy Absorption: Tasmia is able to recover or increase her strength by simply tapping into the Dark Force and taking it from there, or by drawing strength from the slightest shadow, or a dark corner. Darkness is like a nourisher for her, providing her not only with weapons, but energy and power as well.
- Shadow Sensitive Eyes: Tasmia's connection with the Dark Force has granted her the ability to see in her own darkness, natural darkness, and the darkness conjured by others.
Known Abilities:
- Martial Arts: Most of Tasmia's youth was devoted to martial arts. It was easier for her to lose herself in practice rather than deal with people. Additionally, after joining the Legion, she was trained in hand-to-hand combat by Karate Kid. She is perhaps the most skilled Talokian ever. She battled countless numbers to make it to the final few who auditioned to be in the Legion. Her style is loose and easily adaptable. It engages in flexibility and avoids rigid rules. It makes her suited for combat in a number of situations especially when she adds in her darkness control. With this ability she can somewhat startle her opponents. This gives her a wide variety of maneuvers to employ in combat, which combined with her acrobatic abilities makes her incredibly dangerous in combat. Besides strikes or kicks, she knows a variety of throws, locks, blocks, breaks, trips, and escapes. The fluidity with which she switches between moves make her a difficult foe to predict, as she normally adjusts to her opponents style with whatever maneuvers she believes to be most effective when facing them. However, she shows a definite preference for the more aggressive and efficient styles, designed to do damage rather than dodge, block, or redirect attacks.
- Weapons Expert: Tasmia has trained with a tremendous variety of weapons, to where she's capable of using entire categories with expert skill. Her personal specialization revolves around ranged melee weapons specifically, though she's good at ranged combat as well. While every weapon has its own idiosyncracies, Tasmia is well trained in quickly adapting to them.
- 30th Century Galaxy Knowledge: As requested by the Talok VIII government, Tasmia was sent out into space to recognize the galaxies and what, or who was in it in hopes of becoming more “open-minded” towards the world(s) around her own planet. When she became the Champion of Talok VIII, Tasmia believed that by isolating her planet to keep their traditions alive was the best way to protect it. She even went as far as destroying a United Planets ship, and suffered a horrible defeat thereafter. Since then, she has been traveling around the galaxy learn more and more about it everyday. Her work with the Legion of Super-heroes has also helped her expand on her “library” of 30th century galaxy knowledge. Through her years of space exploring she has gathered enough information to know the “know hows” and the “do dads” of the Galaxy around her, making her a very useful handbook when Brainiac's not around.
- Planetary Champion of the Shadow People: Being the Guardian of Talok VIII has made Tasmia a better warrior than most, given her more broader knowledge than most, and has given her quite the reputation. She's the protector for her people, and if that hasn't earned her a title anyway, then nothing will. It's not only the very title that acts as a beneficial factor for her, but the skills and abilities that she has gained along the path of becoming the Planetary Champion for Talok VIII.
- Iron Nerves: Like the phrase, “Nerves of Steel”, Tasmia is extremely brave and courageous. She's willing to face just any type of danger if it has any means of harming those that she is charged for protecting. She has the capabilities and enough willpower to plow through whatever problem comes in her way. Her iron nerves is probably the best and most powerful attribute that she holds, because it has brought her to this peak in her life ever since she was a child.
- Survival Instinct: As part of her training, Tasmia was set out in desert terrains, or isolated islands where she would have to learn to fend for herself. It was all part of becoming the Talokian Champion. Tasmia has survival instinct, she's had it ever since she was a child. She's resourceful and practical and can make something as simple as a “stick” as useful as possible. As they say, “Survival of the Fittest”; “Only the fit will survive”, and in the case of Tasmia she is fit, prepared, and more than capable.
- Elitist Warrior Mindset: Tasmia was breed to become a great warrior, and she takes the title very close to heart. She loves the excitement and rush received from battle, the handling of weaponry, and above all the very empowerment one receives being the “Champion of Talok VIII”. Along with the huge ego comes the “Elitist Warrior Mindset”. She knows she's good, and she knows that other worlds knows that she's good. She'll show off every now and then, but when in the heat of battle, she's obviously very serious and straightforward with her actions. She's an elitist in her mind and to her people, and she's definitely not afraid to show, or prove just how good she really is. Her elitist mindset allows her to face any situation with a headstrong and take-charge attitude, because she knows, that she will get the job done.
- Acrobatics: Tasmia has trained hard to become a master of her own body's movements and balance. Training in a variety of martial arts styles has given her an incredible sense of balance and coordination, as well as a body toned to keep up with the demands she puts on it. This skill allows her to leap, climb, flip, slide, or otherwise move in or out of combat. It makes her a difficult target to hit, but also allows her to do things like jump from building to building, rappel up or down walls, swing by a wire, tightrope walk, and similar feats of athletics. In addition to her martial arts training growing up, Tasmia knows how to tumble, somersault, cartwheel, and flip. More importantly, she knows how to fall properly and how to roll with an impact. She's good enough she can lessen just about any strike and recover from long jumps or falls very rapidly. She's even mastered the art of the instant stand, allowing her to quickly regain her feet should she fall.
Strength Level: Tasmia possesses the strength level of a woman her age, size and weight who engages in rigorous regular exercise.
Weaknesses:
- Natural Fear for Light: By natural law, the enemy of the Darkness is the light, and because of this natural law, Umbra is weak within the presence of bright lights. Bright lights weaken Umbra's powers and also act as power sappers, sapping her strength and energy. If kept within the presence of extremely bright lights for a long period of time, Umbra can die. Additionally, since her eyes are more sensitive than normal, devices such as flash bombs will blind her for a longer period of time, than it normally would.
- Mortal Issues: Despite her abilities, and powers, Umbra is still very vulnerable to blunt weapons, firearms, or explosions. Like a human, or like any other mortal beings he can be wounded be it a minor injury or an extremely fatal one. She is in no way resilient to any sort of sharp object, or poisonous gas, and only has her warrior like skill and instinct to help her pull through mortal injuries.
- Mind Controlling Dummy: In addition to being a vulnerable mortal, Tasmia is very susceptible to powerful telepaths or mind control magicians. Although she works to undo, or prevent any mind controlling tricks to over come her again, she cannot hope to build a powerful mental barrier to protect her mind from invading ones. Perhaps, maybe in a few more, years, she'll be able to pull something like that off.
Misc
Equipment:
- Legion Flight Ring Tasmia has in her possession a Legion Flight Ring, engraved upon its surface is the signature “L” of the Legion of Super-Heroes. It enables Tasmia the ability to fly in both atmospheric environments and outer space.
- Transuit (Legion Force Field Belt): Legion standard equipment from way back around the first draft. When Tasmia has it on, it's an invisible, transparent shield between her and hostile environments. It doesn't protect her against everything, the Legion has had to evacuate things like really-high-radiation areas before, but it lets Tasmia do things like make trips through space without explosively decompressing or bleeding from the eyes. It's also good for underwater, gas attacks, virus attacks, pheromone attacks, and anything else that depends on touching her skin or being breathed in to zap her. It's not good for stopping her from getting hit or punched or zapped or set on fire, though, and the air supply is only good for a day.
- Telepathic Ear Plugs: Another piece of equipment from the Legion, The Earplug is the Legion's main communicator and universal translator, allowing the members to communicate and understand any alien species that they may encounter in their duties.
- Wrist Bracers: Relatively strong metal bracers, made from an unknown substance. Its designed as an object used for block maneuvers, and is able to deflect certain projectile weapons, given that Tasmia reacts in time. They also have a reflective silver surface, acting as good deflectors against laser based weapons.
