History
Zatanna was a successful stage illusionist before she discovered her true magical powers while investigating the disappearance of her father. With the help of Batman, The Atom, Elongated Man and others, she was successfully reunited with him. Their time together was short, and unfortunately, both of her parents were killed on separate occasions while saving her life.
Zatanna assisted the Justice League of America on a number of cases before being elected to full membership. During her tenure with the group her power levels diminished briefly, so that she could only control the four elements: earth, air, fire, and water. It should be noted that this limitation was only temporary and that her magical ability was fully restored. Later Zatanna was worried about her lack of focus while using magic. She decided that her father's style of magic was wrong for her, and explored her mother's mystical heritage.
While Zatanna was a member of the Justice League, the villain Dr. Light stole aboard the Watch Tower and raped the Elongated Man's wife Sue Dibny. When Zatanna and several others Leaguers returned, they saw what Dr. Light had done. A fight broke out and when they finally managed to subdue him, he began to threaten them and their families. Zatanna was prepared to erase Light's memories of the incident, but his terrible brutality and his promises to do it again sparked a debate amongst the present League members on whether or not to tamper with his personality and prevent him from repeating his crime. Zatanna, Hawkman, and The Atom voted for such action, while Green Arrow, Black Canary, and Green Lantern voted against. The Flash broke the tie and voted to tamper with Light's mind. Zatanna used her magic to do so, but the difficulty of the process resulted in her accidentally lowering his intellect. In the midst of her spell, Batman appeared and tried to stop them. Zatanna froze him, and they voted to have her erase his memories of the incident as well.
Zatanna's mind-wipe of Dr. Light was not an isolated occurrence. Catwoman discovered that her journey from villain to hero and her resulting efforts to lead a moral life were caused by Zatanna's mental intervention. Selina came to distrust her memories, motives, and choices she’d made since that incident. In a fit of rage, Catwoman ties Zatanna up and pushes her through a window. Despite this, Zatanna helps Catwoman and, at Selina's behest, mind-wipes petty villains Film Freak and Angle Man, because they had deduced Catwoman's secret identity.
Zatanna and Batman’s friendship degraded once Batman discovered what she had done. He began to distrust her and his other friends in the super hero community. When Zatanna helped Batman with reconnaissance at a Lazarus Pit, she asks him why he came to her. "I needed someone I can trust," Batman said, "but I had to settle for you." This must have been especially hard for her to hear, seeing that she and Bruce Wayne had been close friends since childhood.
Recently, however, their relationship appears to have warmed; sometime later he called her for information on a card-counter involved in scamming the Penguin. He makes no mention of their conflict, and casually calls her by her nickname, "Zee".
After departing from the League, Zatanna continues her stage career and her vocation as a defender against mystical threats, becoming a member of the Sentinels of Magic. She is also the author of the hugely successful Hex Appeal: The Modern Girl's Guide to Magic.
At a superhero support group run by Etta Candy, she recounted how during a failed magical ritual to search for her father's tomes, one of her past ill-casted spells summoned a shapeshifter named Gwydion, who kills her companions. The trauma of this, combined with her guilt from her mind-wipes, caused her to lose confidence in herself and she lost her powers. With the help of her new apprentice Misty Kilgore, she was able to capture Gwydion to use as her own. She eventually regained her confidence and powers, and used them to defeat Zor, a rogue Time Tailor who released the Sheeda as a plague to infect and degrade the entire universe. As a reward, the other Time Tailors allowed her one last meeting with her father, who reveals that his books were written in her, his greatest spell and gift to the world. In the final battle against the Sheeda, Zatanna cast a spell to move time and space, retroactively positioning the Seven Soldiers to overthrow the Sheeda.
Zatanna is currently a reserve member of the Justice League, aiding them from time to time when her magical expertise is needed, although she declined an offer for full membership, stating her need to take a break from heroics. She is still a regular guardian against mystical threats.

Age: 28
Height: 5' 7"
Weight: 127 lbs
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Black
Unusual Features: None
Personality:
- Thoughtful: There's rarely anything that Zee does without thinking it through first. She doesn't consider every single angle of a situation before plunging ahead, no. But, she does try and think it through to what the desired result is before she does something. It's why she took the time to retire and build a career as a stage magician rather then remaining a crime-fighter or adventurer full time. She understands that some things take time, and that some things require patience, while others require quick thinking. It's all about where you are in the moment, and -that's- what she considers.
- Bookish: With such a library of magical tomes at her disposal, it would be a shame if it went to waste just gathering dust. She consults them regularly, and uses them to full advantage. In that, she is also her father's daughter for he was quite curious about the mystical and magical as well. It's also another means by which to drown her sorrows when she's not on stage. Since it's easy to open a book and immerse yourself in the world of magic rather then face the creaking sounds of the house or the hum of the fridge on a particularly quiet evening.
- Disciplined: Practice makes perfect. Zee takes the time daily to practice some aspect of her stage performance. And, also uses her innate abilities on a daily basis. She tries not to use it for things too frivolous like going to the fridge for an apple instead of just saying "Elppa." But if she forgets a change of clothing, or leaves locks herself out of her car, she won't hesitate to speak a quiet spell to get herself out of a jam. She keeps her house in perfect order. Her library well maintained. Her fridge stocked. Her closet organized. It's all a part of keeping herself disciplined - much more so then she was in her youth. An uncluttered mind and surroundings make the use of spells that much easier.
- Honest: She may be kind but she'll also tell you like it is. Truthfully, she may also sugar-coat things a little in order to make it go down easier. But in the end if your dress is still ugly as sin and you need to know it.. what she winds up saying will amount to the same thing. Only, not as hurtful. She has her fill of secrets yes, and knows some of the secrets of others, but that comes part and parcel with both the mystical and the hero business. It's in her everyday dealings that she is as honest as possible. It's also part of the reason why people trust her.
- Loyal: Once you have earned her trust and respect, Zatanna will remain steadfast until the end. She has never betrayed a friend, and she would like to think she never will. Whenever she is called upon to help, she does so. And whenever a friend in need arrives at her doorstep she welcomes them with open arms. Not simply because she's a nice person - but because she believes it is a part of what she does, and what she stands for. And the secrets she does keep for others will stay with her until death and beyond.
- Forgiving: While she will never forgive the people that caused her mother to suicide, or the creature that dealt the death blow to her father - in all else (in part to alleviate her guilt over that small lack of forgiveness) she tends to let bygones be bygones. Holding a grudge only serves to hurt yourself and not necessarily others. And, is an awful way to live your life. One also has to consider that by surrounding yourself with negative energy you run the risk of your spells doing the same thing as well. And that could be disastrous. So she avoids the possibility at all costs.
- Jaded in love: With all of her failed romances, it's no wonder that Zee has turned a little bit cynical when it comes to the intentions of the male species. She doesn't ever expect to have the fairytale romance, or even the short story at this point. And in part seems to keep the possibility purposefully at arm's length to avoid being hurt again. It would take an exceptional man to win her heart, as well as quite a bit of patience. But the way she sees it.. since most seem to be after her for her money or her looks or her other resources.. well, what's the loss right? She hasn't given up -all- hope. Just, you know, some of it.
- Flashy: Bright lights, big city!! Her extravagant costume, and lavish stage performance show only a part of her love for the flashy and fabulous. It's her indulgence in life. She loves the flashing of the camera's, the spotlight warming her face, and a feather boa around her neck as part of a performance finale. She gives her all when she's out there, and isn't afraid to use special effects and eye-widening stunts to make the fans happy /and/ have fun as well. It's not just part of the act, it's part of what she lives for.
- Kind: A word of encouragement.. a quart of ice-cream, a warm blanket Zatanna likes being nice to people, and providing comfort when they need it. It's the counterpart to the flair in her life that she likes so much. She is kind and respectful to nearly everyone unless they've done something to deserve otherwise. Bringing a smile to people's faces is what it's all about.
Powers
Known Powers:
- Wizardry: You could say that magic flows through Zatanna's blood and in a way this is actually true. As a Homo Magi, the mysticals arts come naturally to her. All it really requires for Zatanna to work her magic is for her to say what she wants to happen and concentrate on it. Saying the words is quite an important aspect of this, as it verbalizes Zatanna's desires and allows said desires to be powered by the mystical energies that are the base of her magic. In theory, she can just say the words and something will happen, however, for the longest time Zatanna believed that she had to speak the words backwards for things to work. To this day, her spells are still more effective when she speaks backwards, as she has discovered doing so enhances her concentration. Because of this, that's how she does it and also to honor her father, who used a similar technique back when he was alive. It should be noted that although the words need to be said backwards, the order in the sentence would remain the same. If for some reason she doesn't recite her spells backwards, in game terms she would have a 4D penalty.
Zatanna is a somewhat powerful mystic, and is able to use her magic to recreate a good number of effects. She's limited by her own abilities, though, and its unlikely her magic will be too effective against those more powerful than her to the point that if the level of power is so different, they wouldn't be effective at all. She's able to do some marvelous rain, like causing it to rain in a small area, heal moderate injuries, making things appear and disappear, produce magical blasts, magical shields even create items out of nowhere. The more complex an effect she wants to create is, the more taxing it will be to her. Magical effects that affect large areas, or large amounts of people can be quite draining and it's very likely that she would need a nice amount of rest between spells of this kind.
She's also able to recreate the effects caused by all sorts of different powers, but in general, these effects aren't as effective as having the natural power set involved. Although powerful, the fact that she has to speak the words for thin.- Elemental Magic: Due to her spells she has shown great affinity with elemental spells, some of them being:
- Air Control: she can summon the wind by speaking the word "tsug" for a gust of wind or saying "odanrot" causing great winds to collide and form a somewhat devastating tornado.
- Earth Control: she can use her spells to summon the earth from the ground and move it to her desired location. "Ehcnalava!" would cause a large amount of rocks to come forth onto Zatanna's target.
- Liquid Control: Zatanna can use spells to control the movement of liquid and change it's shape, an example would be "Evaw Ladit!" summoning the water into a huge tidal wave to crush her enemies.
- Fire Control: Her spells can also control the movements of fire and cause fire to erupt spontaneously.
- Weather Control: Zatanna can use her most powerful spells to cause hurricanes or fierce storms, causing lightning and hail.
- Air Control: she can summon the wind by speaking the word "tsug" for a gust of wind or saying "odanrot" causing great winds to collide and form a somewhat devastating tornado.
- Elemental Magic: Due to her spells she has shown great affinity with elemental spells, some of them being:
- Telepathy: Also with her magic she has shown that she can manipulate the minds of others, some of the talents consist of reading one's mind, erasing their mind or completely taking it over.
Known Abilities:
- Brawling/dodge: When it comes to heroes, Zatanna is not one of the physical oriented ones. Still, the woman is far from helpless. Even though her strengths are in the mystical arts, it's almost unavoidable that heroes will end up in more physical situations. Zatanna is no martial artist, but she knows how to fight if necessary thanks in part to her super-heroing days. Maybe not as stylish, but at times a girl has to do whatever gets the job done. She would be able to handle herself against a couple of thugs in the streets without much of a problem. On the other hand, what use are her spells if she's going around getting hit in the middle of a fight? Zatanna is quite able at avoiding becoming a punching bag in a fight. She may not be a Speedster or a Batman, but he handles herself quite well.
- Escape artist: Being good at the art of escaping tends to come with the territory when you're a skilled stage magician. It also comes quite handy in a number of other situations, like when you end up trapped by the bad guys. Zatanna knows how to shift her body around to loosen up restraints, how to work out knots without using her hands and all things of that nature. She's quite good at it too, ranking quite up there when it comes to the art of escaping.
- Hide/sneak: As part of some stage illusions, magicians need to be able to properly hide themselves from those watching and do it fast too. Zatanna is good at doing this, and it extends also to more than just the stage. She's able to identify spots that will make her harder to see, and quickly take advantage of those. Sure, there are always those she wouldn't be able to fool that easily, but in general this knowledge serves her quite well.
Magicians need to be sneaky, and although someone like Robin is still sneakier than she is, she knows enough about this fine art to be able to get the jump on common thugs quite easily. It also comes into play when she's in the middle of the show and may need to 'disappear' in a pinch. Granted, she has enough magical prowess to use other ways to do this, but it pays to learn more mundane approaches for how to do things like this. - Lockpicking/thievery : Ok, so Zee's not much of a thief. She knows a bit more than your average person, in great part because of her exposure to criminals and trying to understand the things they do, but it's not like she's going to go into a stealing spree any time soon. However, she's quite skilled in the art of picking locks. This skill is quite useful for those stage tricks that require it, that's for sure. There are not many locks that she couldn't work out, especially if she has the right instruments. She's not going to become a locksmith any time soon either, but she could do quite well if she ever considered such a career choice.
- Sleight of hand: Another natural skill for a magician, and Zatanna is a very fine magician. She can easily make coins disappear by doing some effortless palming. Rolling things over her fingers is no sweat. She's one of the best in the whole world, really, when it comes to tricking others using simply her hands to do so. Granted, she might not be able to make a car disappear, she has other ways to do that, but even a small bird could be easily slipped out of sight into her coat or something nearby with very little chance of observers knowing any better.
- Arcane lore: Her mother was a member of the Homo Magi and Zatanna has spent some time learning about her mother's people. The short time she spent with her mother before she committed suicide, also helped open Zatanna's eyes more. She even learned their language, and although actual Homo Magi that have been in constant exposure with their culture would know much more than the woman, she still has learned enough knowledge to be considered an authority in this area when compared to the rest of the world. Right now, nobody really knows the Homo Magi better than Zatanna, except of course other Homo Magi. She's quite proficient in their language as well. In general, although there are other magicians and mystics out there with more knowledge of the arcane than Zatanna, the woman still knows enough to be considered a professional and is someone that others without any knowledge would tend to go to.
- Scholar: Zatanna could hardly be called uneducated. And when it comes to information related to famous magicians, the woman tends to just devour and absorb that material. She's quite versed on the history of the magicians of the world, and quite versed on some of their most famous illusions as well. Some of them, she's even able to recreate herself. Even the more obscure magicians that never received a lot of recognition, she would be able to name them and give you some information about them. Some are experts in pop culture trivia; you could say she's an expert on magicians' trivia.
- Performance: If Zatanna is anything, she is a performer and entertainer. She loves working the crowd, and they tend to become putty in her hands during her shows. She's become quite adept at how to keep their expectations high, without emotionally draining them in the process. People just keep coming in droves to her shows. Her performance tends to extend to the rest of things she does, always acting with a certain flair that makes it all very particular to her. Zatanna's magic even carries this aspect of her personality in a way. When Zatanna gets involved in something, others are simply bound to notice.
- Illusions and escapes: Zee's a very creative person, especially when it comes to designing the illusions and tricks she uses in her show. While other magicians may have assistants that help them create new illusions for their shows, she's involved in the whole process, designing, engineering and inventing the illusions herself. She wants to give the best show possible whenever she performs, and always strives to make each experience different for those that have been so kind to come and see her do her thing. Sure, she has a number of illusions that have become her trademark in the stage magician circles, but the woman is always coming up with new things.
- Stage magic: Stage Magic is her life's trade, her daytime job. Sure, she tends to go off saving the world now and then, but it is stage magic that which she always returns to as a way to live in this world. She's one of the best there is, knows a log of the tricks of the trade. There is still room to learn more, but this combined with her natural ability to perform in front of an audience makes her one of the best shows there are on the road right now.
- Wizardry: The woman knows how to work her magic all right. There are more skilled mystics out there, but she knows enough of how to work magic to be considered one of the best at doing so. See, magic is not only about how powerful you are, you need to know how to use it, when to use it and even more importantly, when not to use it. Zatanna has learned this through not only experience, but also other mystics she's interacted with and she's learned her lessons well.
- Animal handling: Zatanna is not going to start training animals for a living any time soon, but some times animals are involved in certain tricks and illusions. When working with animals a certain touch is required, and thankfully Zatanna has it. She's able to calm them down, and get them to cooperate, so to speak, with the tricks she's performing. It's not like she's going to put any of them in any real harm anyway, and maybe her charisma works on animals as well.
- Bluff/persuasion: Getting people to believe what is not is what stage magic boils down too and in this, Zatanna is quite gifted. Her charms and performing skills come into play, and when in front of an audience she's able to make them believe quite a bit. A car disappearing in thin air? Not a problem. Zee conducts herself during a show in a manner that makes it all extremely believable.
In matters outside of the stage, she's not a good but she's still not a terrible liar. In fact, when needed she can be quite good, drawing on those same skills she uses on stage. She's not as good as someone like Constantine, whom happens to be in another league anyway, but she can do well enough. And when lying is not an option? The woman is quite persuasive. John still beats her in this, and maybe that's one of the reasons she tends to go with the requests of the man. If she puts her mind on it, it's very likely she can persuade your average joe in the street as long as it isn't about something too outrageous for the person. - Physical: Everyone needs some way to reduce stress aside from things like reading. And Zee regularly works out at the gym. Her usual regimen includes weight lifting, running the track the gym has, and swimming in the indoor pool. She really only does this for recreational purposes, but is profficient enough to be able to stay in shape just like any other person. And it also helps keep herself sharp for if/when she gets into a brawl. Or needs to do something more on the physical side for her stage act.
b]Strength Level:
Weaknesses:
- Warlock of ys : After helping the JLA defeat this former Green Lantern villain, the Warlock of Ys undoubtedly has a few unsavory things he'd like to do in order to get back at her. His plans include striking back at her when she least expects it.. so perhaps it's fortunate that she usually keeps an eye open for trouble. The unfortunate part, is that the Warlock lies in wait.. he's patient enough to hold out until she's gained a false sense of security and strike back at her.
- Incantations: Although she doesn't -need- to speak her incantations backwards for them to work, Zatanna /always/ does. In part to honor the memory of her fallen father, and in part as a concentration aid. When she doesn't use this method, her spells are less effective because they just don't have the same emphasis behind them. And since all of her spells must be spoken aloud to work, it helps in enunciation. The flaw is two-fold in that if she is gagged or otherwise rendered unable to speak she also can't cast any magic and would be as helpless as any other normal human with basic self-defense.
- Personal life: Uhm John Constantine anyone? Anyone unfortunate enough to have dated him could probably relate to the fact that he's a right bastard and could ruin -anyone-'s lovelife. But alas, he's only one in a long string of romantic failures that seems to plague her. Those she dates turn out to be pigs, or they die. Or, they just aren't meant for each other. Maybe it's simply a Magi curse. But she does hope that eventually this dismal track record will turn around, as she's remained somewhat lonely despite her friends and fame.
- Need for attention: With the death of her parents and her equally as disastrous love life, Zatanna fills that hole in herself by soaking up the attention of adoring fans. She is truly happy while up on stage in the spotlight - and left bereft for a time after she leaves it. She is at her best when surrounded by people or friends and seeks out 'center stage' in any situation unless of course it would endanger others. It's a need that she has yet to come to terms with, and often leaves her feeling burned out, and wondering why it takes so much to make herself happy.
- Homo magi: Although it's certainly a boon in terms of her magical abilities, Zatanna's own mother committed suicide to prevent the Homo Magi from getting their hands on Zee. And it's because she possesses the Jewel of Medulla just as Sindella did. A power source for the Homo Magi that they would have no compunction about capturing the draining her for. It is a history that she on one hand must embrace to be whole, and at the same time keep at a distance from herself to prevent becoming a human battery pack. Not an enviable position, and one that leaves her lonely and hunted.
- Heroic identity: Unfortunately along with the fame and goodwill of being a hero, you take the bad as well. The bad that comes in the form of the various and sundry enemies she's helped defeat alongside the JLA. As well as the demonic entities and villains from other dimensions or planes of existence she's helped dispatch. Her list of enemies is certainly a long and noteworthy one. But it's a danger that all superhero's must live with, and she's no exception to the rule.
- Trouble finder: Well, part of this is Constantine's fault. Since he has a habit of coming to her for help. But Zee is no stranger to trouble either. And seems to attract the types that want to use her body as a means to come back to Earth, or other nefarious purposes. Or maybe they just plain want to kill her. Maybe suck out all her knowledge? Steal her library? Take her fishnets away? Who knows. Regardless, she's attracted her share of foes, even without the help of former romantic partners.
- Guilt complex: Her mother and father are both dead and gone.. and both gave their own lives to protect her. It's something she must live with every day, and on the anniversary of their deaths guilt overcomes her. She does what she can to honor their memories by embracing the abilities that both imparted to her. She goes to far as to speak her spells backwards in honor of her father, and wears the fishnet stage costume in his honor as well. Little things like visiting his grave and celebrating his birthday each year are the only thing she has left of them. She knows that what happened to them is in great part her fault, though in reality she would be better off placing the blame on the people who created the circumstances for their death. In fact at some point she did blame on those people.. John. But time has made her realize that he only sought their help. Blaming herself is perhaps the only recourse she has, since she has yet to find a way to take revenge on the Homo Magi that are her people, or the creature that killed Zatara.
- Redeemer: Zatanna has a tendency to take on those who others consider unredeemable. Not the truly evil. But the misguided. The prime example being Constantine. She remains his friend to this day, despite his woeful lack of morals when it comes to friendship and romance. But he is at heart a good man, trying to do his version of the 'right thing'. Her brand of redemption is simply to try and make people see a better way to help. And unfortunately should someone dupe her into thinking they really are good at heart she would try and help them - much to her misfortune should she be taken advantage of.
- Workaholic: Something Zatanna does very well, is work herself to the bone. Being involved in every aspect of her stage shows, studying magic in her spare time, and helping save the world has left little time for anything else at this point. Which, apparently, is just the way she likes it. She does this in part to prevent herself from being hurt. But then, do people back away from her because she's a workaholic? Or, does she back away from them and retreat into her work? To prevent -them- from being hurt. Hard to tell. Being a workaholic tends to exhaust someone physically as well as mentally too. And while it's yet to take a large toll on her - it's possible it will in the future.
Misc (optional)
Equipment:
- Jla communicator: Possessing one of these little gems because she was a reservist - Zatanna keeps it with her at all times. It's easily hidden as part of her costume, or in a pocket somewhere. And she can use it to keep in touch with the JLA if she's needed. Or, to call for help if she finds herself in a sticky situation.
Transportation:
- Vehicle: Being able to afford pretty much any car you want also means you probably change your mind and switch vehicles often. Zee usually prefers the Jaguar or a Mercedes-Benz Coupe, appointed with all the flashy luxuries. It goes along with the lifestyle. And, it a nice little bit of luxury when she's on the road.
