History
Artemis was born an Amazon as a member of the Egyptian tribe of Bana-Mighdall. Eventually Princess Diana of Themyscira, or Wonder Woman, found their city while searching for the villan Cheetah, who had stolen her golden Lasso of Truth. As the Bana-Mighdallian language had changed so much over time to incorporate middle eastern dialect, Diana had a hard time communicating with the newly-found Amazons. Eventually a battle took place between her and the Bana-Mighdallian's chief warrior or Shim'Tar. Soon an enraged Olympian god Hermes, who was in love with Diana, took vengeance on the desert Amazons for attacking his beloved, and the city of Bana-Mighdall was destroyed. Homeless, the remaining Amazons eventually took up with the witch Circe who was a nemesis of Wonder Woman. It was agreed that in exchange for their servitude Circe would grant them immortality and a new home to call their own. It was decided that since the Themyscirian princess was the initial cause of their city being destroyed, they would take over her Amazon city instead. Though only 14 years of age at this time, Artemis spoke before the Queen and Council to protest the planned attack as she felt that Amazons must not war against each other. Her cries were ignored and the attack was undertaken.
During the attack on Themyscira the witch Circe showed her true colors and teleported the island into a dimension of demons in order for both tribes to be destroyed. The two tribes put aside their rivalry temporarily and fought the demons in order to ensure the Amazon survival. Though only a few months passed in the real world, the time the Amazons spent in the demon dimension lasted 10 years. Discovering that Circe had made her island home disappear, Wonder Woman forced her to return it to its rightful place. Once this was done Wonder Woman learned about the invasion and the demon war. She eventually met Artemis who was now in her mid-20s. The two got off to a rocky start but Diana could see that Artemis' heart was true.
Wonder Woman
Due to being in the demon dimension, Queen Hippolyta began to see visions of the future. One of those visions included Wonder Woman dying. Keeping this to herself, she called for a new Contest for the title of Wonder Woman. Initially excluding the new Amazons, Queen Hippolyta submitted to a vote on the whole to include them at Diana's behest. Through some mystical managing on Hippolyta's part, Artemis eventually won the Contest and became the new Wonder Woman. As gifts to aid her in her new mission, Artemis was given several mystical objects. The Gauntlet of Atlas which increased its wearer's strength by 10 times, The Sandals of Hermes which gave the gift of speed and flight, and the golden Lasso of Truth which forced anyone tied by it to speak only truth. Although Artemis tried diligently to separate herself from her predecessor, this proved to be rather hard to do. Her approach to various situations was often seen as more violent than beneficial. Because of this, and due to Man's World's respect of Diana, Artemis often would receive the cold shoulder from those she tried to help, extending even to her brief time in the Justice League. A comment was once made that Batman refused to allow Artemis to even sit in "Diana's" chair during JLA meetings. She later met a representative from a public relations company who agreed to help Artemis with her public likability. What Artemis wasn't aware of was that the company had staged several false battles for her that ultimately helped downtrodden groups such as immigrant workers and abused women. Once she uncovered this truth she set about to prove herself by single-handedly taking down Boston's biggest mob families. Unfortunately Artemis' arrogance eventually gained the better of her, and she died in a battle with the White Magician. Thus, Queen Hippolyta's vision of Wonder Woman dying came true.
Requiem
For some reason, after her death Artemis' soul ended up in Tartarus and there she became a figurative bride to one of the ruling Princes of Hell named Dalkriig-Hath. Eventually Artemis was able to kill Dalkriig-Hath and regain access to the world of the living. Wanting to separate herself from her former title as Wonder Woman, Artemis used her skills learned in Tartarus to her advantage and joined a group of demon hunting heroes called the Hellenders. While there she was assigned the codename Javelin, which she quickly rejected for the name Requiem. Artemis developed a romantic interest in fellow Hellender Sure-Shot, a master of arsenal and projection weapons. This interest was dropped though when she discovered that Sure-Shot's perceived self-assurredness was brought on by psychotropic drugs which were meant to keep various Hellender members fearless while battling the likes of demons and ghouls. She also befriended a woman by the name of Henrietta Jessup, who went by the codename Sojourner. Though Sojourner didn't have any warrior skills to speak of, Artemis stood by her friend and tutored her as a novice Amazon. This teacher/mentor relationship was later expanded as Wonder Woman asked Artemis to take on a new pupil, that of Cassandra Sandsmark who had become the new Wonder Girl. Taking Cassandra as a full-time student, Artemis became a reserve member of the Hellenders leaving Sojourner to take her place as a full-time member. Later still, Artemis' teacher/mentor resume would expand to even include the combat training of Supergirl. It was during the initial meeting of Supergirl that Artemis would gain her revenge against Batman for his hostile attitude towards her when she attempted to join the JLA. Artemis bested Batman in hand-to-hand combat but was eventually subdued with a tranquilizer dart.
The underworld demon Belyllioth, who served as master over some of the Myrmidon demons, later contacted Artemis to inform her of an unrest in Tartarus. With the death of the demon Dalkriig-Hath, the remaining twelve princes of hell were battling for dominion over the dead demon's realm. As Dalkriig-Hath's widow, Artemis was by rights next in line to rule his region of Hades. Artemis ended the demonic war by presenting herself before the twelve demon rulers to officially be granted her former husband's station. After the blessing ceremony was given Artemis revealed that the blessing was actually given to Belyllioth, who was magically disguised in Artemis' form. Angered by her deception, the twelve princes of hell vowed vengeance against Artemis upon her return to Hades. Fortunately for Artemis, her devoted friend Belyllioth (now officially one of the thirteen rulers of Tartarus) has sworn her allegiance and protection to the Amazon for eternity.
Shim'Tar
After some time Artemis returned to Themyscira to aid her Amazon sisters in the uneasy living conditions they continued to work in due to lingering animosities between the two tribes. Civil war incited by the Amazon sorceress Magala eventually broke out between the two groups of Amazons, leaving Artemis to take up the title of her tribe's chief warrior, or Shim'Tar. She did this in the hopes of ending the war and to guide both tribes to peaceful negotiations. As Shim'Tar Artemis battled Queen Hippolyta, who was acting as the newest Wonder Woman. During their battle Artemis reminded Hippolyta that the Themyscirian queen wasn't given the armor of Wonder Woman out of honor, but rather as a punishment for causing the death of not only Artemis but of her daughter Diana as well. Ultimately coming to her senses, Hippolyta finally forgave the Amazons of Bana-Mighdall for their previous transgressions and joined her daughter Diana on the battlefield. Together Queen Hippolyta and Princess Diana renounced their crowns, leaving the island without a structured government in the hopes of ending the needless slaughter brought on by the war. They were successful and Artemis and the Themyscirian General Phillipus were later voted to be co-rulers of the island.
Themyscira's disappearance
Due to the OMAC attack on Themyscira (as well as the many previous attacks to the island since Diana had become Wonder Woman), it was decided by Artemis and Phillipus that the entire island of Themyscira and all of its inhabitants (sans Diana) would be transported to a hidden dimension via the Olympian and Bana-Mighdallian Goddesses. Artemis and the remaining Amazons live in this dimension in peace for a year's time.
For reasons known only to the goddess Athena, the witch Circe was allowed to enter the Amazons protected dimension and revive Queen Hippolyta from death. Circe informed the Amazons that Diana was being illegally detained by the U.S. government and tortured until she gave them the secrets of the Purple Ray. Because of this the Amazons agreed to give Hippolyta her royal title back and followed her instructions to invade Washington, D.C. which brought about the events of Amazons Attack. Artemis and Phillipus were assigned to oversee the battle but soon lost faith in Hippolyta when they discovered some of her actions against Man's World proved to be less honorable.
Characteristics
Age: 30 {Is Immortal}
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 140 lbs
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Auburn
Unusual Features:
Personality:
Stubborn: Artemis is a prime example of what it means to be stubborn. Once she sets her mind to something, it is almost impossible to swerve her unless you are a) Diana b) another Amazon or c) A God. Ok, so maybe not that stringent, but almost. Artemis is incredibly stubborn on many things and this can lead her into trouble as much as it can be an advantage.
Willing to die: Unlike most, Artemis has no qualm, no hesitation, no question about dying for her her friends, her loved ones or her people. She was raised to fight and she is more than willing to do so if the need arose. This it not to say she is suicidal, but rather she will lay her life down for the good of others if needed.
Determined: Artemis is determined and focused upon whatever task may be set before her. She is almost machine like in her discpline at times, unerring from her goal. This fierce determination can be almost tunnel like as well. Once set upon a task it is easy for Artemis to ignore anything not directly related to it and in the same notion, anyone.
Compassion: For all her gruff and snarling, Artemis does have a compassionate side to her. Staunchly guarded and known to few, there is a side of her that is full of care and warmth. She very much cares for those around her, Diana, Cassie, Donna and her tribe. However Artemis has never had the best way of expressing this. Where feathers are needed, she tends to use..a brick. There are times that she is able to let her softer side out and while they are few and far between, they are always pure and honest.
Direct : Artemis is about as direct as they come. If you ask her a question, she'll give you the honest answer...if you don't like the answer, don't ask the question. She lives as she fights, straight on and without fear. She hs never had a qualm with telling anyone exactly what is on her mind (Just ask Diana).
Unconventional: Artemis does not believe in the conventional ways of the world as say Diana does. Where her sister has adapted the ways of the world of man into her life, Artemis lives as she chooses, not in the way others might dictate. Her mannerisms, her way of dealing with the world and even how she chooses to dress follow only one trend, her own.
Fighter: Artemis is a warrior, a survivor, a fighter. She has had to fight for everything she has and everyone. She sees life as a series of little battles, not always on a field, but there none the less. While she functions as any normal Amazon in her interactions with the world, she is a force of nature upon the field of battle. Once her mind is set within the thrall of combat, she is without hesitation, remorse or mercy if need be.
Courageous: Courage. Every Amazon warrior is taught to be courageous, it is part of who they are. Artemis personifies it. She is able to pur herself in positions, and places where lesser people, even her own sisters, might turn and run or freeze in fear. Artemis has faced down hordes of demons, princes of Hell and even her own death without so much as a second thought. Some may speak of courage, Artemis lives it.
Powers
Known Powers:
Immortality: Artemis, like the rest of her tribe was granted immortality by Circe as part of their pact when the two tribes were still at war. While she will never age and has become more resistant to sickness and disease, she can still die due to injuries as we have already seen. She is also acutely aware of the fact that once she dies, she may not be able to come back this time...as she and Hades have a reckoning to be settled.
Battle knowledge: The exposure to the Warender coupled with the touch of Ares' blood to her own granted Artemis the strange power to be able to see battles in a level far above normal perception. In the history of warefare, there have been countless ways that attacks and counters have been played. It is inevitable that these situations repeat themselves, or come back in similar form. What Artemis gleans is the anticipation of what an enemy might do, as well as a multitude of ways to counteract that. As for an offensive advantage, she might be shown countless variations of how her attack strategy might come about. The ability manifests itself in the heat of battle and leaves her momentarily disoriented as the sheer wealth of knowledge courses through her mind. After conflict has ceased, she finds herself drained mentally more than she normally might.
Known Abilities:
Combat: Artemis has been trained in several forms of armed and unarmed combat since she was old enough to stand. She has been taught in addition to a lifetime of training, by Kanto, the master assassin. From this she has only honed herself to and even deadlier edge. Among her tribe Artemis is without peer, she is the best of her people, rivaling even Diana if not for the Princess' powers.
Riding: Artemis is a proficient horseback rider, having been trained in the art since she was a child. Artemis is skilled in riding both saddled and bareback. She is also schooled in combat from horseback as well, able to fight with melee weapons, or missile weapons as well as if on the ground.
Amazon lore: Artemis has been educated in the lor and history of her people, the Amazons. She knows of the entire journey of the tribe from their separation from Hippolyta through her time as Shim'tar. While her perspective differs from that of her sisters in the Themyscrian tribe, their basic lore, that of Gods and major events remains the same. Artemis seeks to educate the Thyscrians in what had happened to her people during their time in the world of man, but it is a slow process.
Intimidation: Artemis is quite aept at scaring, intimidating and forcing her will upon other people. Frankly, Artemis is just plain scary when she wants to be. She does it with a particular Amazon touch, usually some form of threat of violent and gruesome pain...typical Artemis. Compared to her sister, Artemis may not necessarily be better than Diana, but she is willing to take measures that her sister may not be.
Medicine: Artemis is skilled in the use of various forms of herbal medicine and treatments. She is adept in treating most battlefield injuries as well as minor sickness. In addition to her Amazon medical knowledge, she has also picked up some Middle Eastern practices while her tribe was in Egypt. Artemis is able to use her knowledge as well as some of the Amazon ways to cure minor illness in most cases. This would include things such as poisons as well, given her additional training in assassination by Kanto. However she is not a studied healer and cold not manage with more advanced things.
Hunting: Like all Amazons, Artemis is a trained hunter and tracker. She is able to stalk and hunt both animals and people in the wilderness. Artemis can readily identify almost any animal track, as well as discern how fresh the tracks might be, or if an animal is wounded or burdened. This applies to humans as well, although not as well in the urban environments most people live in.
Languages: Artemis, in addition to speaking English and Greek, is also fluent in Arabic (Egyptian) and some minor Demonic tongue that she picked up while in Hell.
Survival: Artemis and her tribe have made their homes in the desolation of the desert, and the wastes of Themyscria. From this she has learned to survive in almost any conditions and terrain. She can find basic shelter, food, water and exist as she needs too, although that might not be the best level of living.
Weapons: If it's a melee or missile weapon of some sort, Artemis know how to use it with deadly efficiency. She is proficient with all forms of weapons used by the Amazons, and even those that are not given her time in the world of man and her additional training with Kanto. A weapon in Artemis' hands is almost an extension of her own body. She is one of the more deadly people around in this aspect. Her skill with weapons is slightly better than Diana and Donna, but not to the level of say Nightwing.
Archery: From a young age Artemis was trained to be a warrior, and during this training the foremost weapon she excelled in was the bow. From training at such a young age, and having a high aptitude for it, Artemis' skill with bow and arrow are nearly unrivaled; at least in the amazon nation. Her skill with the bow even rivals Diana's own skill and many Patriarch World's best. However there are several people who have greater talents with the bow, than herself. Shado and Green Arrow for example, are above Artemis' level, with Artemis herself approaching Connor Hawke's level.
From this extensive training, Artemis is able to hit many shots that the average and even good archerer cannot possibly make. Moving targets, moving while firing at a target (moving and stationary), and even trick shots are easy for this particular Amazon.
Stealth: From her training with Kanto, Artemis has learned a fair deal of what it means to be an assassin. One of these is not always charging in, but rather applying a bit of stealth. She has been trained in the art of being quiet and not being seen. She is able to move quietly and hide herself amongst the shadows when she needs.
Demolitions: Artemis' tribe was for a time functioning as mercenaries in the deserts of Egypt. As such, they became skilled in many modern methods of war, including the use of explosives. Artemis as such has been trained in the basic use and application of explosives. She can set up simple demolitions and can also gauge how best to use explosives against a target.
Mythology: Artemis has been brought up among the Amazon, and among their mythology and pantheon as well. She is schooled on the Greek gods, their realms and lore. In addition to this her tribe also adopted the Egyptian pantheon as they settled in Egypt. Artemis was taught the hierarchy, spheres and names of the Egyptian gods in addition to her Greek training. While Artemis is quite familiar with the Egyptian gods, she is not at Diana's level when it comes to the Greek pantheon, as she was never a child of the Gods as Diana is.
Leadership: Artemis never set out to be a leader of her people, but over time she grew to be first their champion, and now, their leader. Artemis has learned much of leading other from watching the previous Shim'tar's of her tribe, as well as gleaning knowledge from being with Diana. It has formed Artemis into a competent and formidable leader. While never having a taste for the subtle politics that someone like Hippolyta may posses, Artemis leads by a mix of example, honor and sheer force of personality. Her tribe looks to her and follows her and she has come to garner respect among the Themyscrians as well. While not near the level of Hippolyta, she possesses the potential to rise as a great leader of her people in time
Strength Level: Metahuman
Weaknesses:
Temper: Artemis has a temper. A temper that at times could even rival that of Hera. This at times can prove to be a hindering force to her...and may one day prove her undoing.
Willing to kill: Artemis was raised in the "classical" Amazon sense. Hey people were warriors, then later mercenaries. In this time, she has killed many a person, and unlike Diana, has no compunction about the act when deemed necessary.
Bitter: Artemis has been through the hell of life and afterlife. She has seen her people and herself suffer through wandering, war and strife. It has left her hardened, and a little more than a bit bitter. While time, and her relationship with Diana has helped Artemis to come to grips with this, it still resides within her, the anger, the feeling of being shorted in her life. For her it is just one of the personal demons she must deal with, especially now in her new place as Shim'tar.
Attitude: Artemis has what some might call a bit of a...personality. Ok...so she's a bit opinionated. Alright fine! She doesn't take anything from anyone and she has no problem letting you know that. Artemis is has a rather ingrained response to people that irritate her or that she finds moronic...she becomes a royal (rhymes with witch). Artemis has no fear, and that means she has no problem getting in anyone's face. This tends not to garner positive responses, and at the urging of Diana, she has curbed it a bit, but the tendency will always be there.
Responsibility: Since taking the role of Shim'tar to her tribe, Artemis has also put a larger weight of responsibility upon her shoulders. Artemis sees herself as responsible for the welfare or her people, and it is now the utmost priority in her life. She has been struggling to remain watchful over Diana, Cassie and Donna, while at the same time helping to rebuild the island and the nation.
Headstrong: Artemis was born running on emotion and passion. The finer that is within her drove her to be the best and fiercest warrior she could. However it also has hindered her at times when she has acted without full considerations of the consequences of her actions. While age, dying and the responsibilities to her people have tempered that somewhat, she is still prone to such action.
Power limitation: The influx of sudden knowledge, especially that of a God can be somewhat disorienting. When Artemis' power kicks in, it is momentarily overwhelming. She needs time to focus on the multitude of possibilities set before her and choose the course of action. This leaves her somewhat disoriented for a moment.
Circe Of all the enemies of the amazons, Circe has been the most prevalent in the realm of Artemis. It was the witch who turned the Bana to her bidding and sent them against the island, nearly wiping out both tribes in the process. It was Circe who also crucified Artemis, nearly killing her in New York. These acts have left Artemis with a deep want of vengeance upon the witch.
Ra's al ghul: Artemis came to the attention of Ra's al Ghul shortly after her exile from Themyescria. He captured her and attempted to brainwash her through torture into his service. While not completely successful, she still bears some mental scars from the ordeal, and deep-seeded vengeance.
Misc (optional)
Equipment: None
Transportation: Herself
Weapons:
Demon bow: Artemis has in her possession a bow given to her when she served the demon prince Dalkrig Hath during her death. The bow is a silver shaft, with twin serpents also silver spiraling around the shaft from each end towards the center. The bow is exceptionally accurate and being of a magical nature, can function against creatures of such origins, such as other demons. It cannot however slay gods or the like, but has been shown to be capable of injury to them. As we have also seen, the bow is incredibly durable, being made of some hellborn alloy. The shaft can be used as a weapon, and whatever the string is composed up has an equal durability.
Sword: Artemis has in her possession a magical sword from the Hellenders that was given to her to combat demons. It is enchanted in such a manner that it is able to affect demonic and magical creatures that normal means might not be able to. It is particularly effective against demons, able to damage and wound creatures that would normally be invulnerable to normal attack. However, it is not as effective as her bow, being that the bow was forged by demons, where the sword was merely enchanted by magical means. While she prefers the bow, she is as adept with the sword as any weapon.
