BEHAVIOR PROFILE Although she is not as prone to making her every move or nuance fit her alias’ title as some of the Batman villains are (and she is far too witty to resort to constant ‘cat’ puns), one thing is certainly true when talking about Selina Kyle or Catwoman. Just like a cat, she always plays by her own rules. This is principally expressed as a need to live life ‘free’ by her chosen definition of that term. Mostly, this is straightforward – she refuses to be caged literally in prison or metaphorically in the sense of abiding by other people’s rules and expectations – and it comes from an early life when she all too often did not have that freedom herself. As an adult, Selina’s principal desire, even if it is always unspoken, is to be free from everything and free to do what she wants as and when she likes. Some might see this as an anarchist philosophy, but it is a good deal more instinctual than that and much less a political philosophy or statement. Selina has little but contempt for politicians of all stripes, after all. It is simply about her and her need to be free. This is partially represented by her assumption of the role of Catwoman, although she does not see it as a second identity. At the end of the day, however, whether it is as Selina or Catwoman, she will be free and independent, and any attempt at denying that earns an angry denial at the very least. To further examine this, obviously Selina refuses to stick to the rules that bind most people, prompted by a belief that the law simply does not apply to her – nor would she expect the law to come to her rescue if she needed it as Selina would never rely on anything or anyone else to save it (though she is quite happy to use them). And she certainly wouldn’t admit it to anyone, including herself. To be able to stay apart from it, she needs money, which is certainly one of the reasons she continues to be Catwoman despite having a small fortune in her own right now. In her eyes, she can never be too rich, after all, even if she continues to live in the same small apartment in the slums of Gotham. Beyond that, however, Selina does want to be rich, partly for the aforementioned freedom it allows her and partly because it also assures her that she need never worry about feeding herself or clothing herself or any of the myriad things that she will never take for granted compared to most of the world. That said, it is chiefly about the adrenaline rush of stealing and both keeping her skills sharp and showing them off – the money is a bonus, meaningless in and of itself. What she is absolutely not is a kleptomaniac. She has no ‘need’ to steal, no psychological itch whenever she sees a pretty treasure. Selina Kyle is a woman of wealth and taste and she is quite picky about what she takes (presuming that she is not urgently in need of money, in which case all bets are, as they say, off). Another aspect of this might succinctly be stated as Selina’s views on men. This is a mixture of distrust (an attitude hardly limited to the male gender) and contempt, with a decent helping of willingness to prey on what she sees as their weaknesses. This stems largely from her relationship with her absent and unknown father as well as her time on the street, but Selina defines herself as a woman who doesn’t need any men in her life. It doesn’t help that most of the men she deals with are criminals or that she is entirely willing to use her sexuality to control them and her relationships with them. Again, that control is necessary to her and, if she feels that she is losing it, she may just vanish, double-cross the other person or turn vicious until she feels things are back in balance again. Contrariness is a key part of her. But, even when it comes to women, Selina does not trust easily. It is probably possible to count the number of people that Selina trusts on the fingers of one hand, and that is being generous. Her youth taught her that she could only truly rely on herself and her need to be independent tends to make her keep others at a distance so they don’t tie her down. She simply will not let anyone else define or limit her. Even her arguably closest friend Holly just doesn’t ‘get’ Selina, which is how she likes it. Both as Selina and Catwoman, she likes to be aloof and mysterious, partly for her own amusement and partly because it keeps others guessing. Yes, she is selfish and primarily concerned with her own needs and wants, someone who shouldn’t be relied upon too much because she will either disappoint or do so to prove her independence. On the other hand, those friends she does have should not be trifled with or Selina will fight as hard for them as she would for herself. Batman is the ultimate example of her conflicted attitude here, given their continuing dance of mutual attraction. Next, perhaps, is her fierce determination. If presented with an obstacle, Selina will do whatever it takes to overcome them, as shown by her history. She has literally dragged herself up from the lowest of the low to where she stands now. Whatever it takes, she will keep going and, whatever obstacles life throws into her path, she will either learn from them, find a way to overcome them or avoid them. She isn’t the sort who will make her own life deliberately harder to suit anyone else or to align with some moral code so, if the easiest way is around, Selina will go around. This applies to other things as well. Where vigilantes and others have rules they stick to, Catwoman has or at least admits to none and she is perfectly happy to take full advantage of those of others (even if she does not quite understand their mind-sets). Nowadays, she is intensely proud of her abilities and equally stubborn but she enjoys what she does – the danger, the thrill of theft and violence, that sort of thing. The one rule she tends to abide by is that she does not kill, though even that is negotiable in certain situations. As many of those who have come across her will agree, Selina is also possessed of a particularly sharp tongue. Conversations with her tend to resemble verbal fencing matches where she constantly tries to taunt, infuriate or otherwise distract her opponents so she can get the better of them. As noted earlier, she will also take full advantage of her looks (shamelessly) in any situation she can, while she employs sarcasm and a biting wit with equal skill as her whip. There are a few subjects that are absolutely verboten (such as her father) and these will earn the offender a rapid rise in her irritation. She will never admit to it, naturally, and most things slide off her back easily enough, even if the other can keep Selina’s own taunts from distracting them. It is also important to note that Selina can be a vindictive, spiteful creature who takes great pleasure in repaying those she sees as wronging her in inventive and unpleasant ways. She mocks those she beats in fights, cripples people in ways the Bats would likely never consider and is generally a bad person in a lot of ways. That is absolutely fine by her – Selina enjoys being a ‘bad girl’ and has little intentions of giving up her ways for anything, even now that she is arguably more anti-heroine than villainess. That said, she generally limits her attentions to those who hurt her and most people are safe from her – so long as they aren’t threatening her interests or freedom. That said, she does have a very reluctant edge of altruism to her, one that generally manifests around the Batman although she strenuously denies any suggestion that she loves him or that she is altruistic at any time, partly because it could be very bad for her health in the company that she has kept. That having said, it isn’t entirely true. Selina regards Gotham’s East Side these days as her own personal fiefdom, one that she fully intends to improve by her own, inimitable methods. These are, again, not exactly Bat-family approved but that has never mattered to her. And that is because Selina knows that certain things will not change. She can’t stop people selling drugs. But she can come down like the wrath of an angry goddess on those who sell to children or those who use and abuse others. Basically, she applies the same standards that she considers important. What other people choose to do, that she could care less about unless it gets in her way. But the second someone didn’t get a choice, then she will step in. Effectively, she is the Boss, the kingpin and anyone playing in her kingdom is going to play by her rules or the claws come out. Finally, one thing that is very important to Selina is style. This can be seen in how she effectively taught herself how to be a thief and martial artist of world class ability, in how she effortlessly shows off in a fight with teasing and somewhat eye-catching moves and in how she deliberately steals from challenging locations (also for the adrenaline rush, naturally). She is not just some common-or-garden thief and has gone to great effort to present herself as unique and extraordinary. That said, while style is important, winning is more so and anyone who lets Selina’s stunning looks distract them from the fact that she’s a ruthless, determined and potentially vicious woman with the skills and the intelligence to take on the Batman are in for a painful surprise – or several. DOCUMENTED HISTORY Selina Kyle is a self-made woman — she started life with next to no assets, and emerged from awful squalor and misery to claw her way toward freedom. She and her sister Magdalene are from Gotham’s East End, where they mostly grew up on the street. Their mother committed suicide shortly after Magdalene’s birth, and their father was an abusive alcoholic. When social workers made their way to them, Mr. Kyle soon lost custody of his daughters, who were taken away to an institution called Sprang Hall. Sprang wasn’t much of an improvement over the street, and little Selina fought viciously and frequently to protect her kid sister from both juveniles and the staff. When she was about 11, her behaviour led to being sent to another institution, Sea Gate, far from Magdalene. Sea Gate was even worse, being run by a bitter, corrupt director obsessed with the harshest possible discipline. The director tried to break the deeply rebellious Selina, to no avail, and ended up throwing her in solitary. Now about 13, Selina discovered that the director was embezzling from Sea Gate and boasted about her findings; she was drugged unconscious, crammed into a burlap sack and thrown into the ocean to eliminate her. The kid survived, though, and blackmailed the director into letting her go and destroying all records about Selina Kyle. Selina was back on the street, and joined a community of urchins and pickpockets in the East Side, called the Alleytown Gang and run by an old woman called Mama Fortuna. Selina was already a proficient child thief and street fighter, and honed her skills with the Gang - but soon buckled under the ruthless authority of Fortuna and ended up leaving despite the amount of money she was making for the gang. Out of a gang and about 15, Selina had to resort to prostitution to earn money. For a time she was protected by a slightly older prostitute named Sylvia. Sylvia ended up severely beaten and tortured after she agreed to get in a car with several men, her instincts telling her that this might be too dangerous for her protégée to handle. Sylvia was left traumatised. A year later, Selina’s father died from alcohol poisoning. Meanwhile, Maggie became a nun in a Gotham convent. When she was roughly 17, Selina fell in love with Stan, a pimp. Stan often abused and beat her; one such beating left Ms. Kyle badly wounded in a back alley. The nuns from the nearby convent found her, and asked a police detective they knew to help her. Detective Flannery didn’t get much out of the defiant prostitute, despite being actually willing to work to defend sex workers, but he gave her the address of a teacher and encouraged her to seek training in self-defence. Selina initially refused to follow the advice of a cop, but her pimp Stan soon gave her a kinky cat suit to service a john. Selina came to suspect that the customer was some sick freak and not a regular S&M customer, and grudgingly decided to check the man recommended by Flannery. Though she was expecting more lousy squalor, this encounter would change her life. The instructor turned out not to be some cheap loser but Ted Grant — undefeated heavyweight boxing champion, world class martial artist and melee combat expert, reputed teacher sought out by the best (including billionaire Bruce Wayne) and then retired from being the costumed hero Wildcat. Grant took a liking to Selina’s fierce independence, and started training her free of charge. Despite her defiant attitude, Selina soon proved to be one of the most gifted students Grant ever trained. At that point, it was Selina’s turn to take a younger prostitute under her protection. Her protégée was Holly Robinson aka Holly-Go-Nightly, who was but 13. Selina’s early lessons in the martial arts took place as Bruce Wayne came back to Gotham and started working as a vigilante, though he had yet to conceive his Batman identity. Trawling through the streets, the incognito Wayne intervened to prevent a pimp from hitting a kid. The pimp was Stan, and the kid - Holly - stabbed Wayne in the thigh to defend her boss. As the situation degenerated, Selina intervened but Wayne, already a world-class fighter, knocked her out with but one punch. Humiliated, Selina started training much harder with Ted; when a john gave her a cat-of-nine-tails, she demanded that Ted train her in using it as a weapon rather than as a fetish toy. As she worked with Grant, Selina encountered another older man who served as one of her teachers and mentors. Only known as Stark, the master criminal burst in one night as she was with a john called Tony the Toucan, and killed him as revenge for having double-crossed him. Selina and Stark took a liking to each other and eventually became lovers, with Stark agreeing to have Selina work as his junior partner and teach her. Selina’s relationship with Stark, one of Gotham’s top freelance criminal talent, was her secret and she continued to work as a hooker to protect it. At the same time, she continued to act as a thief, taking advantage of her ‘clients’ for information on potential solo jobs. On one such occasion, while robbing a gallery, Selina came across what she could only describe as a ninja. He, seemingly disgusted that a woman had touched his prize, promptly beat her to a pulp and Selina, headstrong as ever, duly followed him. This took her to a dojo filled with students of the man they called the Armless Master. While her initial reception was less than cordial, the Master took a shine to her and took her on as a student. Selina had been impressed by the skills the ninja showed and was eager to learn them. The original ninja, Kai, became a long time enemy of hers because of this. But, between Grant and the Armless Master, Selina’s fighting skills blossomed into something truly formidable. Selina had her second encounter with Bruce Wayne at this time, as she was among the crowd who assembled and witnessed the impressive escape of Batman from the police. Inspired by the primal, seemingly unstoppable Batman, Selina decided to don the cat suit she’d been given and quit her job by giving her pimp a severe beating in the exact side alley where he had previously left her for dead. After she left Stan unconscious, Selina unmasked - but coincidentally ran into her sister as she got out of her convent. Selina fled. Magdalene tried to investigate to find her sister, but as a nun in the red light district was rather visible and Stan decided to use her to get his revenge. He kidnapped her to draw Selina into a trap, and the situation got out of hand. Stan and Magdalene would have fallen to their death, but Batman came from nowhere and saved Maggie’s life. Shaken by meeting her sister, having killed Stan, and the sheer ferocity she demonstrated while wearing the cat costume, Selina fled again. Selina did not intend to ever wear the catsuit again, as it made her unhinged, but another calamity befell her when Holly was beaten by a respected police captain with well-hidden sexual neuroses. Selina put the cat costume on and would likely have killed the cop had Batman not intervened again. He convinced her not to murder the captain, succeeding in large part due to the obvious chemistry between him and the cat-clad woman. Sensing that Batman might be one of the very rare men she could trust, Selina flirted with him, kissed him then sucker-punched him and walked away to make it clear that he had no power over her. Holly recovered, and decided to stay with Maggie at the convent. Selina, now 18, embarked on a solo career as a thief preying on feared East End criminal bosses. Some of her thefts were attributed to the mysterious Batman, and out of sheer ego and cattiness Selina - now called Catwoman - took huge risks to steal from Gotham’s senior crime lord the Roman, slashing his face with her costume’s claws so the thefts would not be claimed to be the work of the Batman. Ironically, she only got out of the caper alive thanks to the intervention of Batman, who was coincidentally present as he was trying to take down the Roman. As Catwoman, Selina later double-crossed Stark during a diamond heist, grabbing the bag while Stark narrowly escaped capture. Stark had to leave Gotham for years, but became a feared nationwide operator, thief and killer. Though Selina genuinely loved Stark, she apparently needed to prove to herself that she wasn’t dependent on him and he had no power over her. A very successful thief - especially after she got Stark’s diamonds - the former street kid, small-time thief and hooker established herself as a debutante during her early 20s. Her beauty and poise were the talk of Gotham’s high society, and she even got her paws on Gotham’s most eligible bachelor, Bruce Wayne, though it was more of a fling and did not last long due to their respective secrets. Selina used her society girl act to gather intelligence and case sites, making her even more unstoppable as a thief. Though Batman was supposedly hounding her, their relationship was ambiguous, and he occasionally assisted her, as was the case when Catwoman was kidnapped by Mister Handsome. During her early career, Selina occasionally got sucked back into East End business. Her former protector, the prostitute Sylvia, convinced her to commit a theft along with her so she could retire - since in Sylvia’s view Selina owed her. The heist went badly, and Catwoman was forced to leave Sylvia in the hands of the police, leading Sylvia to blame her for everything that had befallen her since they met. Partly as a reaction to this, Selina took a new protégé - a streetwalker from Flagstaff nicknamed Arizona. Arizona remained with Selina for a few years to cobble herself a new life; though living with Selina was risky (including narrowly surviving the bombing of Selina’s apartment), Arizona was successful and eventually left for a life free of prostitution. Meanwhile, Selina’s sister Margaret had a crisis of faith, left the convent, married a man named Simon and moved to California. Catwoman was at that point a top-notch, confirmed operator and adventurer, and started working internationally, planning and performing major heists. She also often worked as an anti-hero of sorts, acting on her personal sense of justice but always keeping an eye out for number one. Among her numerous adventures, she got involved in Santa Priscan intrigues and assassinations, was blackmailed into working as a special operative for the government, collaborated with the “Bat Squad” to find an antidote to the Ebola-like virus ravaging Gotham, played complex games of alliance and revenge against Batman, stopped a copycat burglar (another former Sea Gate juve), dated a police detective who turned out to be a serial killer, allied for a while with the Huntress and acted as something like a vigilante, etc. Catwoman was in Gotham City during the earthquake, escaping alive despite being trapped underground for hours. She fought against some villains who would have made the situation worse for the beleaguered Gothamites, but also continued her criminal operations. In Las Vegas, she stole $3M thanks to Wildcat (Ted Grant) then left him to hang - but the situation turned ugly and Selina spent most of the money to locate and rescue Grant, then paid for an expansive vacation so her teacher would forgive her. Catwoman also clashed with the Joker; she defeated him with Batman’s help and made sure he was securely imprisoned- by breaking in the highest security part of the Arkham Asylum and dropping him in his cell. When Gotham became a no man’s land, Selina left for Paris - but eventually came back to the US, and more precisely Manhattan. She blackmailed the CEO of a company into making her the VP, then faked her own murder and framed the CEO for it, thus freeing the position. She then proceeded to play the stock market, cheating and acquiring insider knowledge to sextuple the worth of the company and then was made CEO on the strength of her results. After having thus stolen an entire company, she decided she would steal an even bigger prize - New York City. She ran for Mayor. Her campaign went wrong, attracting the attention of assassins such as Gunhawk and Lady Vic, leading to a complex scheme by the Trickster (who successfully manipulated her and made the situation untenable) and increasing heat to a point where her insider trading feats started being traced back to her. Selina was forced to fake her death and disappear. Later during the No Man’s Land crisis, Catwoman - who could easily defeat the blockade around Gotham in either direction - again worked with the Bat Squad. This apparently brought bad luck, though. Catwoman was framed for a theft, and despite Batman’s advice Commissioner Gordon became determined to catch her once and for all. Gordon’s intricate set-up worked, and Catwoman was jailed as Jane Doe with a two-year sentence. Given her long list of enemies, she was placed in solitary. Catwoman started going crazy from the imprisonment, and a mad rush to escape triggered a prison riot. In the chaos, Selina was bushwhacked by Dr. Harleen Quinzell, who after passing herself as a police negotiator slit her throat and kidnapped her. Using large doses of potent chemicals, she forced Catwoman to commit crimes and defy Gordon; Catwoman eventually beat the drugs and escaped. While making her comeback by blackmailing Gotham’s Mayor over his narcotics use, Catwoman accidentally ran into Gordon - who right at that point was shot by a third person. Though everybody blamed Catwoman and the Bat Squad hunted her down, she eventually cleared her name. This was but a respite. She clashed again with her foes Scarecrow and Two-Face, who also manipulated her using chemicals, then was reportedly killed in an explosion by Deadshot, who had been hired by Gotham’s Mayor for payback. The Mayor did not believe that Catwoman was truly dead, and hired investigator Slam Bradley to watch for her return. Meanwhile, Selina started working on a heist job that was both highly lucrative - $24M in cash - and extremely difficult to pull off. A fast, heavily guarded train, four cars long, with the cash in thirty bags and no stops between starting point and final destination. She knew that she could not pull the heist off alone, and decided to contact Stark, whom she had not seen in years. Stark agreed to go along with his old, traitorous flame - both out of nostalgia and for his own reasons. He and a young, brilliant criminal techie named Jeff and an old friend of Selina’s, a fence by the name of Swiftie, helped to perfect the plan for the heist. The heist was brilliantly executed, but was second-guessed by a French Canadian criminal named Laperier. The ruthless Laperier killed Swifty and Jeff; Stark and Laperier then killed each other. Losing Stark was very hard on Selina - she realized that the life as a master criminal only provided her with empty thrills while killing off those for whom she cared. Although she professed not to know the meaning of the word “love”, she clung to Stark’s corpse during the whole night before slowly letting it slide into the river as the dawn came. She formed the idea to go back to her roots in the East End. Meanwhile, Slam Bradley was doing a superb job. He established that Selina Kyle hadn’t been killed in New York, and that the corpse in the coffin was not hers. He then guessed she was actually Catwoman, and was well on his way to tracking her down when she decided to meet him. However, Bradley had come to empathize with Selina. He admired her guts, class and hard life much more than he respected the Mayor. He decided to burn his findings, and became her friend. Re-evaluating her life and goals, Selina took the difficult decision to ask Batman for help, and started psychotherapy sessions with Dr Leslie Thompkins. Selina originally thought that her unease was caused by the numerous mind-altering drugs she had been subjected to during her career, but her blood work came up normal. Dr. Thompkins helped her realise that her problems were psychological - she wanted to come back to her roots, to fix her relationship with her sister, to fix the environment she grew up in and to resume being Catwoman. Catwoman reinvented herself as a vigilante for the still-squalid and decaying East End of Gotham City. The returned Catwoman started establishing herself as the new mistress of the East End. She both put an end to those criminal activities inflicting the worst damage to the locals - including some of the most corrupt police activities - and funnelled stolen money into revitalising the area. She was reunited with Holly Robinson, who had left the convent and returned to the street - and this time Selina succeeded in turning Holly’s life around as she had done for Arizona. Holly started running the informants and helper networks working for Catwoman, which were largely made up of street urchins, and would even eventually act as Catwoman in Selina’s absence. However, it soon became evident that the power behind much of East End crime was the psychotic, ultra-violent, sadistic crime lord Black Mask. Black Mask became determined to eliminate Catwoman; furthermore one of his lieutenants was the former prostitute Sylvia, who knew who Catwoman was and could thus target her loved ones. A gangland war erupted pitting Black Mask’s forces against Catwoman and her few allies. The brutal clashes were devastating. Several of Selina’s key projects (such as repairing the cathedral and building a community centre) were firebombed. Magdalene Kyle was left catatonic and traumatised by torture, and her husband murdered. Holly was nearly killed and underwent some harrowing experiences, including being forced to shoot Sylvia dead to save Selina. Slam Bradley was badly wounded several times, and Black Mask fell to his apparent death. In the wake of the war for the East End, Selina took Holly on a road trip to help her deal with the trauma of having killed Sylvia, and had her trained in self-defence and athletics by Ted Grant. When she returned, Catwoman finished establishing herself as the queen and kingpin of the East End, providing protection at no cost. EXAMINATION RECORD The man was short, shorter than her in the elegant heels that added inches to her height. He was not fat but he was certainly plump, a little butterball of a man with sweaty hands and nervous eyes. Credit where credit was due, he had tried to keep his eyes on her face. But then they inevitably slid down the graceful column of her long neck, bared by her black dress and emphasised as Selina laughed demurely at something he had said. They darted lower too, before snapping back to her own mesmerizingly green orbs. She pretended she hadn’t noticed, though her full red lips had long since quirked into a knowing smile. He flushed guiltily and stammered. But he kept his hand firmly in place in the small of her back as she towered over him, and so Selina smiled and spun him around the floor with ease and grace. He was a boy or, at the least, certainly not a man. Oh, he was older than she was by two decades judging by that receding hairline and the overbearing wife looking on disapprovingly from the side lines. Another familiar presence to her, though Selina was silently amused by one fact about all this. If it had not been for the wife and that glower, she doubted that she would be dancing with him at all. She had seen her warning younger, more attractive women away from her husband all night and it was just the tiny sign she needed to know that she would enjoy needling the frigid wife just a tiny bit. Well, that and the expensive strand of black saltwater pearls around the wife’s neck. Those, as some of her former acquaintances would have said, would fetch a pretty penny. There had also been the look of disdain on the other woman’s face when it had been suggested that they should make a donation to Leslie’s clinic, and that had settled it. Selina had few friends. Leslie Thompkins was not one of them. But she was certainly someone who did far more good for Gotham and its people than almost anyone at the dinner, and she did always dislike seeing that form of snub go unanswered simply because Leslie had far too many manners to say anything. Selina too would never stoop to an actual insult. Dancing just a little too close to her precious husband and then taking those pearls – and all her other jewellery – away would be plentiful retribution, she thought as she laughed at another of his feeble jokes. Another turn, and he dipped her down. Selina’s eyes caught his wife’s across the room and she had to hide a smirk as they spun away back into the mass of dancers… Two days later and Selina stood in the shadows of the house, sifting through a box of necklaces with casual curiosity. Still dressed in black, though this time she was covered in leather from top to toe instead of silk, there was an ease to her movements that was born of confidence despite her presence in another’s home. Oh, its owners were not at home – they were out taking advantage of another dance or another charity event. Perhaps he was dancing with another woman, his wife looking on with tight-lipped disapproval, but perhaps not. Selina certainly did not care. In fact, it did not even matter – she could have done this while they were asleep in the bed across the room. Ah, there it was. With two fingers, she hefted the pearl necklace from the box and examined it for a moment. Perfect. Casually, the catsuit she wore was unzipped and Selina clasped the strand around her own neck. For a long moment, she just stood there, admiring the fit with a smug smile before she undid it, dropped the necklace in her bag and returned to her perusal. The necklace would certainly help Leslie. Now it was time to find something to compensate her for her trouble… subject examined by Doctor Cyber | [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellpadding,0,true][atrb=valign,top][atrb=cellspacing,0,true][atrb=style, width: 40px;] C A T W O M A N |
