History
Tormented throughout of his childhood because of his bookish nature and lanky frame, Jonathan Crane spent most of his years in school being afraid. As a teenager, he developed an admiration for Icabod Crane, the fictional protagonist of the book Sleepy Hollow, whom he saw a bit of himself in. He donned his Scarecrow outfit for the first time at age 18, assaulting the ring leader of the kids that picked on him, Bo Griggs, and his girlfriend (who rejected him earlier in the year), Sherry Squires. Squires was killed in the attack, and Griggs was paralyzed from the waist down.
In addition to the psychological and emotional stresses that he underwent during the school year, Crane was also abused by his family. His great-grandmother, who was a twisted religious fanatic, tormented him regularly, and in one instance she locked him in an old, creepy Church that was filled with crows. His father took off shortly after he was born, and his mother did not show much affection for him at all.
He grew up to become a professor of psychology at Gotham State University, specializing the psychology of fear. After a few years of teaching there, he accidentally injured a student during one of his lessons, and as a result, he lost his job. Smitten with rage, he dug out his old Scarecrow costume, and then used his newly-developed fear gas on the regents who fired him. Shortly after the murders, Batman begins investigating, and eventually tracks Crane down and apprehends him.
In Batman: The Long Halloween, Scarecrow escapes from Arkham Asylum with the aid of the Mad Hatter, and under the direction of Carmine Falcone, the two proceed to rob the Gotham City Depository. This attempt is foiled by Batman and Catwoman, and the two are taken back into custody. Scarecrow also plays a role Batman: Dark Victory, the sequel to the aforementioned novel. Early in the story, he attempts to deliver a number of children's toys that contain his horrific fear gas into Gotham City, and later, he teams up with Two-Face and some of the other rogues, and an elaborate plot against the Hangman killer, Alberto Falcone, and Batman is forged.
After perfecting his mind controlling technologies, the Mad Hatter placed one of his microchips inside Scarecrow's hat, leaving him temporarily under his control.
During the events of Knightfall, Scarecrow was one of the prisoners that escaped from Arkham Asylum after Bane blew it up. He teamed up with the Joker, and together, the two abducted the Mayor of Gotham. Batman traced the pair to the sewers of the City, where they were holding the Mayor hostage. The two managed to escape, but during the chaos the Mayor was rescued. Later, the Joker savagely beat Scarecrow with a chair after he tried to poison him. He was sent back to Arkham shortly afterwards.
In the widely-praised Mistress of Fear storyline, Scarecrow attempts to extract revenge on a young, undergraduate student who testified against him in court. While gasing her with one his toxins, he discovers that she is just like him when he was a boy; she is constantly tormented by all of her peers, and she wants nothing more than to be left alone. Deeply shocked by what he has learned, Scarecrow flees from her side temporarily in order to prepare for his new plans. Later, he returns to the girl, complete with a new costume for her and everything. He begs her to join him and "hit back" at those who torment her, but she rejects Crane, and tells him that he is insane. Batman arrives at the scene just in time, preventing a teary-eyed, emotionally wrecked Scarecrow from killing his would-be apprentice.
He was one of the many rogues involved in the Hush conspiracy that was orchestrated by the Riddler. He used his expertise in psychology to evaluate his fellow freaks, and then he gave the Riddler (and his partner, Thomas Elliot) an estimation of what each one would want in exchange for their cooperation. Although he was instrumental to the plot's success, he only appeared briefly during the story ark, and he was quickly defeated by Batman.
During the "As the Crow Flies" story arc, the Scarecrow is transformed into a murderous creature known as the Scarebeast by the Penguin and his assistant, Linda Friitawa (Fright), to kill off his disloyal colleagues. Through the intensely traumatic mutation, the Scarebeast possesses super strength, endurance, clawed hands, and the ability to release an even stronger hallucinogenic gas. After being defeated by Batman by injecting it with massive amounts of tranquilizers, the Scarebeast reverts back into Jonathan Crane, who ends up in a critical coma, from which he later awakens.
Characteristics
Age: 38
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 146 lbs
Eyes: Brown
Hair: Brown
Unusual Features: Scarecrow possesses an abnormally lanky frame, and often bears a resemblance to his namesake.
Personality: Jonathan Crane discovered a savage delight in terrorizing people during his teenage years, shortly after the murder of Bo Griggs and Sherry Squires. He has an unhealthy obsession with the fact that he was tormented and bullied as a child; everything from his fixation on fear to the guise that he takes up all correspond, somehow, to his negative experiences in school as a youth. The world had its turn hitting at him, and now he wants to hit back. He believes that there is nothing wrong with what he does, and that it is a perfectly reasonable, rational way of dealing with his personal struggles, and with those who hurt him and laughed at him. He becomes alarmingly upset whenever one of his fellow rogues makes a joke about him, or when he is mocked or made fun of in newspapers or tabloids.
In the writings of Jeph Loeb, he is shown to have an inclination to sing children's nursery rhymes while carrying out his exploits. He is not as theatrical as some of Batman's other themed villains, and prefers to operate under dark, silent conditions; it adds to the element of fear that he desires to surround himself in. Crane obsesses over Batman; not in the same way that he does over what he had to go through in high school, but in the sense that he is a loose end. A victim that keeps on escaping. An adversary that will always be three steps ahead of him. On some occassions, his fear gas has had lasting effects on Batman; in one instance, it made him paranoid and reclusive (even moreso than usual) for months. The Dark Knight is most grippingly effected by it, however, when it causes the memories of his parents to surface.
He has been known to forge alliances with his fellow rogues more often than not; he has teamed up with the Joker and the Mad Hatter on more than a few occassions, and he was one of Two-Face's lieutenants during the events of Dark Victory. He also played a crucial part in Hush and the Riddler's plan to unleash the Dark Knight's rogues gallery onto him relentlessly, and then break him. He is one of the Dark Knight's most prominent and feared adversaries, and he is sometimes considered to be the most disturbed.
Powers
Known Powers: Scarecrow possesses no superhuman abilities.
Known Abilities:
Psychology: Jonathan Crane is an expert in the field of psychology, more specifically the study of fear. He is a walking textbook on the subject, and can recite the name and description of nearly every known phobia. He often demonstrates his intellectual prowess by analyzing his fellow patients at Arkham Asylum. His extensive knowledge of the subject grants him the ability to manipulate others well; in one instance, he was able to plague a pair of police officers with fear through mere words.
Chemistry: Jonathan Crane is a proficient chemist and has used this skill to develop his infamous fear toxin.
Violent Dancing: When forced to fight, Crane uses his own martial arts style he calls "violent dancing", which is based in part on the crane style of kung fu, and makes full use of his long arms and legs.
Intimidation: Using a variety of toxins that cause his victims to hallucinate and believe that their phobias have come to life, Scarecrow instills fear in all encounter him.
Strength Level: Scarecrow possesses no notable strength level, and has always been among the weaker members of Batman's rogues gallery.
Weaknesses:
Weakling: Crane poses little, if any, physical threat to his opponents. Although he does have his own style of fighting to resort to, it isn't particularly effective, and he hardly ever falls back on it. His lanky frame makes him even frailer, and his lack of experience in hand-to-hand combat makes him even more useless in a physical brawl.
Insane: Crane is a sick and twisted man, who would like nothing more than to see the rest of the world cower in fear. Most of his rage sprouts from his childhood experiences; being tortured by other children on a regular basis, and being abused by his family at home. He spent a good portion of his life being afraid, and now he feels that it is time to start "hitting back at the world." Like most disturbed villains, his insanity makes him more dangerous, but it can also serve as an Achilles' heel in some situations.
Birds and Bats: In some stories, Crane is shown to have an all-consuming fear of birds and bats. While his phobia of birds his quite ironic, it has been suggested that his fear of bats has stemmed from his numerous encounters with Batman, and all of the resulting defeats. Some depictions contradict these ideas, however; he has been seen with a pet bird that he calls Craw in some story arcs.
Anxieties of Youth: Crane's main motivation is not the parental abuse that he underwent as a child, but oddly, the way he was mistreated by his peers and classmates. His very name is taken from the favorite taunt of all the bullies that would torment him, and if any of his fellow rogues harass him or tease him, he becomes incredibly angry. The stresses that he faced during his school years are what broke his mind; what turned him into the twisted, perverted mess that he is today. He is determined to continue dishing out his revenge, and prove anyone who doubts his abilities to do so wrong.
Batman: Like many of his fellow rogues, Scarecrow is utterly obsessed with Batman. He is absolutely determined to instill crippling fear into the his adversary; a fear so great, that he will be thrown into a state of helplessness from which he can never escape. Batman is the only thing that stands between him and the revenge that he needs to dish out; the only thing that stands between him and his mission to bring Gotham City to its knees in fear and terror.
