Real name: Scott Free
Alter Ego: Mister Miracle
Status
Occupation: Adventurer; Professional Escape Artist
Martial Status: Married (to Big Barda)
Legal Status: Citizen of New Genesis; formerly a prisoner on Apokolips
Group Affiliation(s): New Gods, Justice League of America
Origin
Place of Birth: New Genesis
Known Relatives: Izaya/Highfather (father, deceased), Avia (mother, deceased, Barda (wife), Bertha (mother-in-law), Orion (adoptive brother),
History
Scott Free is the son of Izaya (Highfather), the ruler of New Genesis and his wife Avia. However, as part of a diplomatic move to stop a destructive war against the planet Apokolips, Highfather agreed to an exchange of heirs with the galactic tyrant Darkseid; the exchange of heirs guaranteed that neither side would attack the other. And so Scott exchanged places with Darkseid's second born son Orion.
Scott grew up in one of Granny Goodness' "Terror Orphanages" with no knowledge of his own heritage. As he matured, Scott rebelled against the totalitarian ideology of Apokolips. Hating himself for being unable to fit in, he was influenced by Metron to see a future beyond Darkseid. Scott became part of a small band of pupils who were tutored in secret by the rebel Himon, a New Genesian living as a "Hunger Dog" on Apokolips. It was at these meetings that he met fellow pupil Big Barda, who would later become his wife.
Eventually, Scott Free escaped and fled to Earth. His escape, long anticipated and planned for by Darkseid, nullified the pact between Darkseid and Highfather and gave Darkseid the excuse he needed to revive the war with New Genesis. Once on Earth, he became the protégé of a circus escape artist, Thaddeus Brown, whose stage name was Mister Miracle. Brown was impressed with Scott's skills (especially as supplemented with various advanced devices he had taken from his previous home). Scott also befriended Brown's assistant, a dwarf named Oberon. When Thaddeus Brown was murdered, Scott Free assumed the identity of Mister Miracle. Barda later followed Scott to Earth, and the two used their powers, equipment, and skills in the war against Darkseid, who was still interested in recapturing both of them. Eventually, tired of being chased on Earth by Darkseid's servants, Scott returned to Apokolips and won his freedom by legal means, through trial by combat.
Scott Free later became a member of the JLA (as did Barda and Oberon) and remains a member of Earth's heroic fraternity. He most recently appeared in Identity Crisis. After the Crisis, he and Big Barda was made members of the revived Justice League.
Characteristics
Age: Unknown
Height:6’0’’
Weight: 185 lbs
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Black
Unusual Features: None
Personality:
Heritage: Scott enjoys his life on Earth. He can't deny his Fourth World ties though. He has sacrificed his New God Alpha Force. He has even walked away from the mantle of Highfather. Scott will always aid the people of New Genesis and oppose Apokolips.
Love: Scott's love for his wife, Big Barda is probably his strongest motivation. He will dare anything for her. In the past he has fought the legions of Apokolips, Darkseid's Elite and even the Black Racer, avatar of Death for her. Scott will do whatever he has to for her safety and happiness. In spite of this they do not always get along. For one thing Scott is often doing things without telling Barda to avoid upsetting her. Barda usually finds out. Scott and Barda have had several separations, but they always return to each other and each separation seems to make their love stronger.
Daredevil: Mr. Miracle loves the thrill of testing himself against a new trap or binding. Scott is not foolhardy and does not risk injury or death for no reason. Rather he is a calculated risk taker who enjoys outwitting foes. Mr. Miracle likes taking the risks however. It's doubtful he ever considers avoiding a trap, he's geared more towards overcoming them than avoiding them. In his own way he's as stubborn as his 'brother' Orion, the Dog of War.
Egalitarian: Scott believes that all sentient beings deserve to be free. In the past this was almost a Messiah complex. Scott will preach the value of liberty to Darkseid's slaves by the light of the Fire Pits. Heck, he's preached /to/ Darkseid. Scott firmly believes a truly free spirit can only be destroyed, not broken.
Irrepressible: After years spent in the Happiness Home, dodging Darkseid's attempts to recapture him and dealing with Earth supervillains, Scott refuses to be imprisoned again in any way shape or form. He will not stay imprisoned any longer than it takes to devise an escape (which usually isn't very long). He will also resist any form of mental control with every fiber of his being.
Performer: Perhaps ham would be a better description. Scott loves performing for an audience. He'll go out of his way to make a fight or escape flashy. In fact Scott is one of the few heroes to enjoy exposition. "Sure Oberon, I'll tell you how I escaped the exploding piranha trap!" He won't share sensitive information with villains of course but he can bend his friends' ears.
Fun loving: Scott loves a good time, whether that is sitting by the fire with Barda watching Wrestling or aero-disc surfing around skyscrapers. He doesn't get distracted from a mission or goal but rather has fun getting to it if he can. He is an opportunist, always looking for new experiences. Very few things can make Scott worry or fret. Darkseid and Barda being at the top of a short list.
Messianic: In the past, Scott tried to teach the lowlies of Apokolips about freedom. He met with failure. Lowlies only understand fear of authority. But he still retains the impulse to reach out to the oppressed and help free them. After decades in the Happiness Home he understands all too well that the cruelest chains are forged in the mind and soul. Perhaps it was because at least for a time Scott began to accept training as an aero-trooper and crave the small measure of authority it would give him.
Mystic: Scott Free craves a normal Earth life. Out of all the New Gods he is the most human. But he is still a New God, a life form man might evolve into in a few million years. Sometimes that shows through. For all his Bailey Connecticut homeliness sometimes Scott just goes Cosmic and shows his viewpoint is not the same as you or even Superman's.
Normality: After being a prisoner of Apokolips for decades, Scott realizes how wonderful Earth and a normal life is. He likes humans and sees himself as one of the guys. In fact, outside the colorful suit, he is pretty down to Earth and fond of barbecues, TV and a cold one now and then. Scott often gets involved with neighbors and their problems or even people on the street.
Pacifist: After years of watching the brutality of Apokolips as well as seeing Highfather's example Scott has renounced violence. This is not total. He believes violence is a last resort, used when there are no other options. Only a threat to Barda or Oberon could rouse Scott to use physical force first. Scott enjoys outwitting opponents and removing their reason for fighting.
Powers
Known Powers:
Alpha Effect: Mister Miracle wields the Alpha Effect. Its powers seem to be canceling out or undoing Darkseid's Omega Effect.
Anti-Life Equation: Mister Miracle also has the complete Anti-Life Equation, the Anti-Life Equation is said to give the being who learns it power to dominate the will of all sentient and sapient races. It is called the Anti-Life Equation because "if someone possesses absolute control over you - you're not really alive." but he refuses to use it as it reduces other beings to mindless slaves.
Superhuman Reflexes: Like all New Gods, Mr. Miracle has a highly developed nervous system. His reaction speed and eye-hand coordination is superior to a normal human's. Scott can move fast enough dodge a bullet before the gun fires and react with blinding speed.
Longevity: Scott is old. Like, very old in Earth terms. In the reckoning of New Genesis he is still a young adult, but sometimes he'll get this knowing glint in his eye and that shine only comes with great experience. Like all New Gods, Scott possesses extreme longevity. He never has let on just how old he is, but it's a safe bet he is old enough to hold the office of President.
Immune: Scott has an extremely evolved immune system. It explains how he was able to survive on Apokolips for years without dying of a dozen diseases and toxins. In addition, having survived on Apokolips means he has developed immunity to a number of toxins and diseases.
Superhuman Coordination: Mr. Miracle possesses remarkable sense of his body. He can pick a lock with his mouth or wriggle his way out of a straitjacket while Oberon throws knives at him. He can use each muscle of his body in isolation. This makes him incredibly dexterous and allows him to perform many athletic skills as though he had years of training.
Known Abilities:
Escapology: Mr. Miracle is the World's Greatest Escape Artist . He can escape most bindings in his sleep. In fact he has passed beyond unconscious competence in the realm of metacognition. He is aware of the unconscious procedures he's mastered and can modify them in their use with other skills or to use new knowledge. He is marginally better at escapes than the Batman, though it would take another expert to make that determination. Much of his skill is the result of his advanced nervous system.
Scott has studied the science of traps. He could probably make the Joker green with envy. In addition to building traps, Scott can invent new ones using primitive or Fourth World tech. Mr. Miracle usually knows as much about a trap as the builder. As a corollary Scott is very knowledgeable about security and jails. He learned from the bets on Apokolips.
Combat skills: Scott Free is a pacifist and never uses violence unless all other means are exhausted. That doesn't mean he's a pushover. While he is not as skilled as the Blue Beetle or Black Canary, he does know martial arts. In combat, Mr. Miracle often uses his acrobatic skill and extraordinary leaps and flips to outflank opponents and his enhanced reflexes to dodge attacks. Scott is a good marksman but not familiar with thrown or melee weapons. They can hurt people.
Technology Himon taught Scott about advanced technology. Scott is an inventor though he usually modifies or improves Fourth World devices and doesn't build totally new devices. He designed most of the equipment in his costume or heavily modified it from standard models. Scott's bugaboo is Earth technology. He keeps trying to apply New Genesis standards to it or modify it with advanced tech. Sometimes he's way too trusting of Earth tech, like propane barbecues. Sometimes he decides a fusion-powered grill would be snazzy. He's not incompetent, he did run a fix-it shop in CT. But sometimes he has lapses into mad science. Scott has no such lapses with League technology or computers. He often divide tech support duty with Beetle.
Performer: Mr. Miracle is a media star as well as a superhero. He knows how to play a crowd and how to make his escapes look a lot tougher and closer than they are. Oddly this sort of thing comes in handy in superheroics. Scott is a master of escaping, using his stealth skills to sneak away and then reappear at a dramatic moment.
Scott is a glib taker and married life has honed his skills of persuasion. Hecan also be surprisingly intimidating when he wants to. Part of this is his goldy heritage. Part of it is living with Barda. He learned from the best.
Universe: Scott has seen a lot of the Universe. He is knowledgeable about the Fourth World and much of our Universe. He can navigate a star ship or use a Boom Tube. He knows the people and places of New Genesis, Apokolips and Earth. He also has a working knowledge of many areas of Earth from his years on tour.
Strength Level: Unknown
Weaknesses:
Curiosity: Scott likes exploring new places and new experiences. This is a driving force and he's often walked into traps knowingly to find out a villain's motives. He will often respond to cryptic messages or clues left for him. The Riddler would love this boy. Scott enjoys seeking out the unknown on any planets and frequently accepts bookings or assignments that will take him to a new place.
Earth food: This is a flaw because Scott doesn't consider what Barda cooks to be Earth food. Heck, you should try telling Barda she's a lousy cook. We're sure that she wouldn't take the criticism lightly. Scott sneaks food outside whenever and wherever he can. He is especially fond of hotdogs and other pushcart food that you can eat on the go.
Earth technology: Earth technology has given Scott fits in the past. He never seems to realize what constitutes normal usage. Plus he likes to tinker and include Fourth World parts in terran gear. This is a recipe for disaster. To his credit he can deal with human made machines and is all business with security devices and electronics. It's mainly in his off hours that he gets bored and decides to rig a barbecue from fusion power.
Darkseid: The Dark Lord of Apokolips easily sets the tone for the tragedy of Scott's young life. Scott is the son of Izaya, Darkseid's nemesis. He was the only person to ever break Darkseid's conditioning and the Destroyer regards that as a slight failure. But Darkseid does not tolerate any degree of failure. Darkseid doesn't want Scott dead. Not right away. He wants Mr. Miracle captured and broken first. The Lord of Apokolips doesn't spend a lot of time thinking up ways to torment Mr. Miracle and Barda. He does keep it in mind though and won't pass an opportunity to hurt Scott.
Darkseid's Elites: The Elite are a group of ruthless individuals eager to please Darkseid and show each other up. Showing another Elite's failure will result in one less Elite, usually. Then everyone can move up in rank. While most of Darkseid's enemies are far too powerful for one of the Elite to tackle alone, Scott is the exception to the rule. Members of the Elite will try to capture Scott or Barda to win favor with Darkseid. They won't kill him as that could earn them a taste of the Omega Beams from the Destroyer. They prefer to deliver Scott to their master. Granny Goodness is Scott's sworn enemy and the exception to the rule. She holds special hatred for Scott and could kill him or Barda and brave the wrath of Darkseid.
Nonviolent Moral Code: Scott dislikes violence. He will only use it if it's necessary. He could never willingly take another's life except to protect innocents and even then might choke. He doesn't strike the first blow. A sneak attack or roughing a person up is often more than he is capable. He likes to resort to trickery to get things done.
Dependent (To Barda): Don't tell Barda, but sometimes she can be a drawback. Barda is a very capable, supportive wife. However, in the past, people have struck at Scott through her. She also has a slight tendency to get into trouble and can distract Scott (in several ways!) from important matters. Scott doesn't like to think what she'd do if she caught him looking at another woman.
Misc (optional)
Equipment:
Motherbox: Sentient, miniaturized, portable supercomputers that can access the energy of the Source for various effects; they can change the gravitational constant of an area, transfer energy from one place to another, control the mental state of a host, communicate telepathically with a host or other life form, manipulate the life-force of a host to sustain it past fatal injuries, open or close Boom-tubes, take over and control non-sentient machines, evolve non-sentient machines, merge sentient beings into a single more powerful being, sustain a life form in a hostile environment such as space, and do many other things. Mother Boxes have an affinity for the Source and are believed to draw their power from it; in that sense, they can be seen as a computer that links man to God.
To the New Gods, they are common appliances, much as a sentient device can be called an "appliance". Other individuals have been given access to them at specific times, when they are in need of aid.
It should be noted that Mother Boxes could only be manufactured by a being born either on New Genesis or Apokolips, and not even all could do it (at least one in Apokolips failed). And that this was accomplished through much training.
Duplicate Test Dummy: Scott has a robot duplicate that is a perfect physical match. Mentally it leaves a bit to be desired ("Yes dear! <click>). The robot has enough intelligence to operate a jet aircraft, it isn't very verbose or good at personal interaction. Scott has used the robot as a decoy or to test out a new trap. He has gotten very good at fixing the dummy.
Deathtraps: Scott has a variety of deathtraps he keeps around to train. Anyone breaking into his basement is in for a scare and might walk away thinking Scott was a serial killer. The traps are not set up and functional unless Scott is using one to train. But they can be lethal. He usually doesn't train this way unless Barda is around to bail him out.
Cape: Mr. Miracle's cape is made of a memory fibroid from New Genesis. Scott's Mother Box can transmute the cape into a cocoon that can withstand a sizable explosion. This can only be done once. The transmutation is not permanent and destroys the cape.
Gloves: The gloves have wide cuffs that hold secret pockets for Scott's multi-cube and assorted picks. Small explosive charges can be stored safely between the fingers. In addition the gloves can fire concussion blasts and contain a fingertip laser for fine welding or burning out a lock. The palms contain magnets to let Scott cling to metal surfaces (see aero-discs) and adhesion pads letting him hang on virtually anywhere. Scott's gloves are fireproof and damage resistant.
Mask: Mr. Miracle's mask contains back up circuitry for his Mother Box and a life support unit. The back up circuits let Scott use his Mother Box hands free. The life support system lets him conserve Mother Box power in hostile environments instead of having her provide him with an atmosphere. The mask is tight fitting and sometimes uncomfortable but Scott is one of the few superheroes who doesn't mind pulling his mask off on the job to get some fresh air.
Costume: Mr. Miracle's costume is based on Thaddeus Brown's. It seems to be skin tight, except for the gloves and cape. In reality it contains numerous hidden pockets. Each glove and boot has a pocket and the slim utility belt contains half a dozen more. The full-length flowing cape is attached with fasteners that can detach it in a moment to allow for greater freedom of movement. In a secret pocket on his right upper arm Scott hides his Mother Box .
The costume is magnetically sealed and provides limited protection from damage and fire. It's bulletproof allowing Mr. Miracle to resist the claws and blades of Parademons briefly. He also doesn't have to worry about his cape catching fire when he's hanging over a flaming pit.
X-Ray Contacts: X-ray Contact lenses are tiny devices worn on the eyes. They can see through several inches of normal matter, enough to see the inner workings of a lock or other small device. Mr. Miracle's lenses can only scan an area a few inches on a side.
Micro-suction Cups: Micro-suction cups are another tool hidden in Mr. Miracle's gloves. They are tiny cups that are nearly invisible, he can use to scale walls or cling to ceilings. Scott uses these when he wants to conserve his aero-disc power or when the slight sound of an aero-disc might give him away.
Assorted picks: An electro pik is a small tool hidden within Mr. Miracle's costume, which allows him to secretly help him escape traps he's been locked into. The electro pik gives Scott a bonus to opening locks and defeating security systems. He has several hidden pockets in his gloves and costume that hold his electro pik and he can easily hide it in his mouth. Scott has recently added a laser pick to his tool box for dealing with fibre optics equipment.
Transportation:
Aero Disks: Thin metal plates about a foot across. The New Gods use them for personal travel. They can reach speeds of 250 mph and attain altitudes of a few hundred feet. They can hover. Scott has modified his discs considerably. They are designed to retract into his boots when not in use. He also added magnets to let him cling to a metal wall or ceiling and toe knives to let him cut ropes or nets in flight.
Weapons:
Multi-Cube: It is a peripheral device for Mr. Miracle's Mother Box. The cube was designed by Mr. Miracle to use the transmutation power of the Mother Box to create a number of preset mechanisms in its interior. All of these functions are much easier to perform that improvised tra nsmutation. They can be activated in combat and other stressful situations.
The cube is small enough to be hidden in the palm of the hand. Mr. Miracle has hidden his in his boots and gloves as well as his utility belt. The multi-cube contains a microprocessor that is not sentient but still capable of interpreting complex commands and recording data.
The multi-cube can fly under its own power and follow the mental commands of Mr. Miracle. The cube can use the transmuting power of the Mother Box to create several hundred feet of swing line that can support several hundred pounds. The cube can rewind this line and easily support 200 pounds. Besides the cable, the cube can produce a smoke screen or fire suppressing foam.
The simplest use of the cube is to generate light effects. The cube can create lifelike holograms, a blinding flash or a laser capable of cutting through a quarter inch steel cable or handcuff links. In hologram mode the cube can record extended scenes around it or make a complete holographic recording it can then manipulate to simulate the subject in motion.
The cube can also emit a powerful sonic beam that can spring locks or shatter a brick wall. The sound blast can a stun an unprotected human being.

- Danger Sense
- Life Sense
- Omniscience: Motherbox has control of all Detection Powers, and Mental Powers regarding insight.
- Omni-knowledge: Motherbox has Amazing access to know just about anything needed at the time.
- Energy Transference: Because Mother Box has the Leadership talent, she can automatically transfer her energy to her user. In addition, through his affection for Mother Box, the user can transfer energy back to her. Only one such attempt is allowed per day.
- Source Conduit: Mother Boxes have been seen to: Access the Energy of the Source for various effects such as:
- Gravity Manipulation: Change the gravitational constant of an area.
- Energy Transfer: Transfer energy from one place to another.
- Emotion Control: Control the mental state of a host.
- Telepathy: Communicate telepathically with a host or other life form.
- Regenerate Others: Manipulate the life-force of a host to sustain it past fatal injuries.
- Boom-Tubes: ability to open or close boom-tubes. Any character that possesses both a Mother Box and a sample of X-Element can automatically create a Boom Tube capable of transporting him between dimensions and galaxies. Boom Tubes have the Warp power at Class 5000, Dimension Travel, and remain open approximately eight seconds (1-2 rounds).
- Machine Animation/Control: Take over and control non-sentient machines, including the ability to evolve non-sentient machines.
- Gestalt: Merge sentient beings into a single more powerful being.
- Life Support: Sustain a life form in a hostile environment such as space, and many others.
