History
The Early Life
J'onn's early life is one that is quite eventful. J'onn is not of this Earth and his origins are from the fourth planet from our Sun. His people called it Ma'aleca'andra however people of Earth refer to the red planet as Mars. He was born to M'yrnn and Sha'sheen J'onzz along with his rare twin Ma'alefa'ak. J'onn would eventually follow in the footsteps of his mother, as she was a Manhunter of Mars before him. J'onn would be at odds with his brother early on in his life. When Ma'alefa'ak had been charged with Mind Rape, a very serious crime for Martians, J'onn would be the one to track him down and bring him in. Ma'alefa'ak would be stripped of his memories and telepathic abilities by the ruling council and sent away to start a new life. Though no one could possibly understand the hate that burned in J'onn's brother even after being stripped of his memories.
That hate would thrive within Ma'alefa'ak, even if he no longer remembered why he felt it. While away and building his new life, Ma'alefa'ak would engineer a terrible psychological and physical plague that would attack a Martian's weakness to fire and spread telepathically. This plague, known as H'ronmeer's Curse, would rapidly spread throughout the Martian population. With his telepathic link severed from the other Martians as well as his weakness to fire, Ma'alefa'ak would be immune to the plague. J'onn was charged with finding Ma'alefa'ak and getting to the bottom of this plague. J'onn learned of how the plague worked and affected his people, he rushed home to save his wife and daughter from it. However as he reached them, his daughter had already been infected. When his wife opened her mind to her daughter during her pleas for help, J'onn's wife also became infected with the plague. J'onn witnessed both his wife and daughter's death to this firey plague. J'onn would leave to track down his brother to his Fortress for a final confrontation. J'onn and Ma'alefa'ak had a final epic confrontation where the two of them battled. J'onn was left the victor and Ma'alefa'ak seemed to have perished in the conflict. This left J'onn alone as the sole survivor and Last Son of Mars.
Being the last Son of Mars, J'onn spent time wandering the now desolate and lifeless planet. His wandering ceased when he was transported, rather miraculously and suddenly, by Doctor Saul Erdel to Earth. So broken up mentally by the experience of being ripped from Mars and transported to Earth, J'onn's mind was easily influenced. Erdel, in a means to cure J'onn's psychic malady, attempted to recreate J'onn's memories from scratch, giving him memories of happier times which were completely fabricated. J'onn's mind took this influence and replaced his true memories.
Though these false memories that Erdel gave J'onn would not last, as J'onn's mind eventually worked out the truths about his past and discarded with the falsities. While adjusting to being stuck on Earth, J'onn came to terms with the idea of beginning a new life on his newly adopted home. He chose to blend in with humanity and took on many different personas and identities. One of his more important identities became John Jones. J'onn began to shadow the Denver Police Detective known as John Jones. J'onn was intrigued by this man's demeanor and his job, which mirrored his Manhunter background on Mars. When John was murdered cruely, J'onn stepped in and assumed the man's role and life, thus creating J'onn's John Jones persona.
J'onn would first venture into the field of Superheroics by taking on the persona of the Bronze Wraith. As the Bronze Wraith, J'onn joined the Justice Experience. This experience helped to cement his desire to help others as a hero such as this. However this experience would not last long. The Justice Experience's nemesis, Dr. Trapp, destroyed the team. J'onn was the only survivor and only survived because he was rescued by the Justice Society.
The Hero, Martian Manhunter
Though as his Civilian personas, J'onn did use his powers to solve crimes and fight bad guys. He never truly showed his Martian Form, always sticking with his assumed Human identities. If his cover was going to be blown, he'd simply move on to another crafted identity. That is until heroes such as The Flash, Superman and Batman started making public appearances and shows of heroism. It is their influence that gave J'onn the courage to step out from his guises and become The Martian Manhunter.
The Martian Manhunter debuted when he banded up with other heroes. The impromptu alliance of some of the World's most powerful heroes was an effort to stop an enemy that they all could not deal with alone. The enemy was the alien race known as the Appellaxians. The allied heroes were successful and decided that working together would be beneficial for everyone. Thus the Justice League of America was founded.
After the Foundation of the Justice League, J'onn found himself in an awkward situation. He was the most alien of the group and felt out of place. Unbeknownst to the rest of the League, J'onn studied his team mates. He studied them and kept dossiers on their abilities, skills and weaknesses. He did this because he knew not of his colleagues and they had yet to form the lasting trust and bond that they would possess as the years past. The team would learn of his surveillance and confront him. The League nearly folded and went their separate ways, but due to a good will gesture of trust by the Flash, they all came to trust one another. They all revealed their secret identities to one another as signs of trust and cooperation.
J'onn remained a part of the League's Roster for some time. If there were something truly constant about the League, it would be his participation in it. That is until Darkseid's attempt to steal Earth's "Legends". Things occurred quickly. Membership to the JLA was expanding, new blood being introduced to the ranks. Numerous crisis were occurring. While Darkseid was abducting the "Legends" of Earth, Professor Ivo had released a number of androids. Two Justice Leaguers were abducted and subsequently killed by Ivo's androids, Steel and Vibe. J'onn personally brought Vibe's body to the League's Mountain Sanctuary and laid him to rest in a cryogenic chamber. It was after these deaths that J'onn decided to disband the Justice League of America.
It was not long before a new incarnation of the Justice League would form. It would be known as the Justice League International. J'onn, of course, served with this League as a leader. It's hard to fathom a League without the Martian Manhunter present. During one of their early missions, J'onn came to hold a powerful sentient virus within his body. It had been threatening life and with the help of Dr. Fate, J'onn managed to imprison the virus within his alien cells. The damage that this virus would to J'onn could not be imagined just after the battle. It took time, but the virus would indeed be a hinderance for J'onn.
J'onn had to restrain the virus constantly while it was held prisoner in his body. This strain eventually began to wear away the mental blocks and memory paths that J'onn's subconscious created with the help of Dr. Erdel when he was first brought to Earth. J'onn began to regain true memories of his past on Mars. To help the return of his memories, H'ronmeer, who was perceived as the Martian God of Fire and Death, had been helping guide J'onn's memories back. Of course, J'onn was frightened by this prospect. The God of Fire and Death had been the most feared of the Martian Pantheon of Gods.
With the aid of Dr. Erdel, J'onn was returned to Mars to confront his past and H'ronmeer. It is on Mars that J'onn came to discover H'ronmeer's true purpose and his reasons for attempting to get J'onn to remember his past. H'ronmeer was not the God of Fire and Death but was the being that protected and watched over the dead. H'ronmeer needed J'onn to remember because his subconscious mind and his mental abilities were keeping the Martian Dead from resting in peace. His subconscious latched onto their memories desperately and because of this they were not allowed to rest in final peace. Convinced, J'onn needed to let go of his past and embrace his present and future. J'onn returned to Earth with a new sense of inner peace and purpose.
At a point after returning to Earth, The Martian Manhunter's body were taken over by the mystic Bloodwynd. He was trapped within the mystic's Blood Gem. J'onn had been trapped inside the Blood Gem and the Mystic took his place. J'onn was trapped for months and it was not until the intervention of fellow Leaguer's Blue Beet, The Ray and The Atom was he freed from the Blood Gem and taken from Bloodwynd's control.
Not long after being freed from the Blood Gem, J'onn was approached by the United Nations. J'onn was asked to head up a new branch of the Justice League that would be involved in the training and grooming of younger and more inexperienced super heroes. So J'onn would found and head the Justice League Task Force. The Task Force meant to train up and coming superheroes, but it also acted as a field unit within Europe for the Justice League. The heroes of the team would go on numerous missions in Europe. They would stop Aryans from destroying the other races of the world, would counter political assassinations and even run afoul of Vandal Savage. Their time together would be changed after the events of Zero Hour. After helping to stop the events of Zero hour and Parallax's plans the team is reformed into a group meant to focus more on training of the individual superheroes and not running strike missions for the United Nations. Though eventually, like all other branches of the Justice League, the United Nations funding was revoked and the team was forced to splinter and disband.
The Justice League is not something that can go away. It is an idea and a method of dealing with problems that was too essential to just let die. A new League was formed and J'onn was there at its founding. And its very first mission was to deal with a long forgotten race of Martians known as the White Martians. The White Martians had long ago been banished to the "Still Zone" by J'onn's own Green Martian race following a long and arduous civil war. This civil war had been started due to the ideological differences between Green and White. The White Martians had set up a colony in Antarctica and experimented with ancient humans, altering their future potential as a race of super powered beings. They had also experimented with the cloned servants of the Martians on Saturn.
A group of White Martians escaped the "Still Zone" and used Z'onn Z'orr as their base of operations. Z'onn Z'orr is the ancient White Martian colony in Antarctica. The White Martians became known as the Hyperclan and they became popular among the populace of Earth. They tackled world crisis and global issues with efficiency and strength and gained the public's trust. While doing this, they were secretly abducting members of the Justice League. Fellow League member Batman deduced the reason for the disappearance of their League teammates. J'onn and Batman were responsible for tracking them down. To stop the White Martians, J'onn wiped their minds with his mental powers. They were in essence unaware of who and what they were. The League decided to leave the White Martians in this state and allow them to live among Earth's populations with anonymous human guises.
In between missions with the League, J'onn found himself spending more time as his Civilian guise of John Jones Private Detective as well as performing solo missions for the likes of Cadmus as well as to further his own investigations. J'onn would be responsible for ending a psychic vampire threat at Cadmus which nearly cost him his own mental abilities. During this time, J'onn gets wrapped up in an investigation against both his Civilian ID of John Jones as well as his super heroic identity of The Martian Manhunter. J'onn had recently revealed to John Jones's partner, Karen Smith, that he was infact The Martian Manhunter. This led his partner to secretly begin to investigate the Manhunter. Karen began to accumulate a list of all of J'onn's human disguises.
When Karen Smith is found dead in her office, a Metahuman is instantly made the likely suspect due to the way Karen was killed. It appeared that she had been blasted by high level beams of heat energy. When her research into J'onn J'onzz is discovered by the investigators, The Martian Manhunter becomes the number one suspect.
J'onn, however, knew he had not killed his partner so he sought to find his partners killer while also trying to clear his own good name. From the evidence gathered at the scene, J'onn thought the murderer could have been Jemm, the Son of Saturn. However, Jemm had been left in Z'onn Z'orr to recover from a coma by J'onn Jemm had been left in the coma after he had been brainwashed by The Injustice Gang in an attack against the Justice League prior to this event.
Unknown to J'onn, his brother Ma'alefa'ak had somehow made his way to Earth and to the Martian city of Z'onn Z'orr. J'onn's brother was now calling himself Malefic and decided to get revenge on J'onn. Malefic had come to Z'onn Z'orr just after J'onn had left Jemm there. Malefic impersonated J'onn and went about torturing Jemm both physically and mentally to the point that Jemm's mind broke. This was all a part of Malefic's greater scheme for revenge. He would turn Jemm on J'onn first. When J'onn came to Z'onn Z'orr, Jemm attacked him. J'onn, confused over the attack, subdued the Son of Saturn and took him to the Justice League's Watchtower on the moon. Malefic would follow J'onn to the tower.
It is at the tower that Malefic would turn the League against J'onn. Malefic would render himself invisible and attacks the League in such a way as they believe they are witnessing J'onzz attack them. J'onn is forced to retreat from the tower. Unfortunately for J'onn, the Tower's teleporters are disabled by his brother. This is all a part of his plan. J'onn is forced to take one of the vehicles and make his escape. Unfortunately the vehicle has been rigged with a firebomb by Malefic. The vessel is locked and the bomb goes off. Malefic assumes he killed J'onn after turning everyone against him.
Seemingly triumphant, Malefic scours the Watchtower attempting to pick off the remaining members of the Justice League. During his rampage on the Tower, Malefic will receive a video transmission from his rather living brother. J'onn has figured out the plot against him. Confronting Malefic via the video transmission, J'onn arranged for Malefic to leave the tower and face him finally at Z'onn Z'orr. J'onn went to the ancient Martian Colony and activated its flight systems. The Colony could be automated and made to leave Earth's orbit. J'onn piloted the massive station out of Earth's orbit and towards the sun. Malefic would join J'onn in the ancient city and the two would face off in battle as the craft lurched closer and closer to the sun. In an effort to finally subdue his brother once and for all, J'onn stripped all the mental barriers and blocks imposed on Malefic by the Martian Council years before. This enabled Malefic to tap into his vast mental abilities once again. J'onn made Malefic even more powerful by allowing him to tap into these mental powers. J'onn also made Malefic aware of his crippling fear of fire as they came closer and closer to the sun. Malefic was crippled with fear as Z'onn Z'orr plunged into the sun. J'onn, nearly crippled himself, was saved from plunging into the sun by Superman and Orion after they had figured out that J'onn was being framed.
While J'onn was sorting out this mess, the investigation of him by Denver Investigators as well as the Department of Extranormal Operations was concluding. The DEO determined that J'onn was not responsible for the death of Karen Smith or anyone else. Their reasoning is that J'onn is the one that helped with the leg work of the investigation and that J'onn would not be assisting them had he been the one that killed those people. So J'onn was cleared as a suspect. The DEO also came into possession of Karen Smith's notes and research on J'onn's various alternate identies. Many of them become public knowledge and J'onn is forced to abandon them.
Not long after this troubling period, J'onn left Earth. The reason for this was to reconnect and heal after his battle with his brother. He went to Mars and spent time there to find peace and mourn what happened to his brother. He returned to the Watchtower just in time. A ship from Saturn had arrived and demanded the return of Jemm. Believing that the Justice League was holding him prisoner, they attacked the Watchtower. J'onn arrived just in time to sort things out!
J'onn agreed to give Jemm back to the Saturnians, but demanded to join them on the voyage to Saturn. He wanted to heal the mental and emotional wounds that the Injustice Gang as well as Malefic inflicted on him. It is then J'onn learned that the Saturnians had been in civil war since the Martian civil war. He learned that peace would be brokered after the marriage of Jemm and Princess Cha'rissa; Members of the two opposing sides. On the way to Saturn though, the ship they were all on were attacked by space pirates. They demanded that they take into custody Jemm and Cha'rissa.
Sensing a plot against Jemm and Cha'rissa, J'onn agreed to the pirate's terms and impersonated Jemm. Cha'rissa demanded to go as herself and have no one impersonate her. Jemm was left behind and returned to Saturn. While on the pirate ship three important things happened. The first, J'onn fell in love with Princess Cha'rissa. J'onn uncovered the plot against Cha'rissa and Jemm. And Cha'rissa came to terms with the fact that she and J'onn could never be together.
The plot against the peace that Saturn would finally have was engineered by a being known as Cabal. It was discovered by J'onn that this being was the melded form of several Saturnians that came together to oppose the union of Jemm and Cha'rissa. J'onn tricked the being to allow him to be absorbed into the union that was Cabal. J'onn found that facing Cabal one on one would mean his defeat. Joining with them and defeating each component one on one would be his best bet for victory. He was right and Cabal was defeated. Jemm and Cha'rissa would be married and peace would finally come to Saturn. J'onn would return to Earth and the Justice League with a degree of inner peace. J'onn saved the Saturnians from more war and he found love in Cha'rissa after missing it for so long.
Shortly after this ordeal, a new team of superheroes emerged. That team was the Ultramarines. They were a team of man made metahumans that were funded and operated by an element of the United States Marine Corp, led by General Wade Eiling. Secretly, Eiling had learned that a cancerous tumor was killing him. He used the Ultramarines to obtain the sunken body of The Shaggy Man. The General used the Ultramarines in a campaign to destroy the Justice League. He had a fundamental dislike for the League and their efforts and felt the country should be defended by military backed super heroes. So as the League fought the Ultramarines, Eiling modified the machine that created the Ultramarines for a new purpose. He used that machine to transfer his consciousness from his dieing body to that of The Shaggy Man's. He started referring to himself as The General in this new body. As The General he was as unstoppable as The Shaggy Man. The General is only defeated when the Ultramarines realize they were duped by General Eiling. This freed the League to deal with the true threat, The General, and banish him to an asteroid in space.
From one crisis to another, the JLA had to deal with the re-emergence of Amazo. Due to the nature of Amazo's powers the JLA activated every reserve and former member that they could get a hold of to battle the android that could emulate their powers. J'onn participated in the battle with the Android and was nearly taken out by its copy of Superman's Heat Vision. J'onn, as well as the rest of the League, was spared when Superman tricked the android into thinking the entire team was officially disbanded. Its logic circuits were scrambled and the android was subdued yet again.
J'onn was on hand when the Justice League of America had to deal with an event dubbed 'World War III'. This event was caused by an extra-galactic weapon from before the birth of the current Universe. Its influence led to the foundation of another Injustice Gang. The weapon was capable of increasing the aggression levels of living things. The closer it go to a world, the more aggressive the beings of the planet would become. Its subtle influence was responsible for getting Super villains like The General, Prometheus and Lex Luthor together. They plotted to take down the Justice League. They would attack the Watchtower with the help of Zazzala, The Queen Bee and her brood.
The Injustice Gang's attack on the Watchtower coincided with the arrival of the super weapon. The super weapon was dubbed Mageddon by New Genesis and it had arrived in the solar system. Its arrival created mass turmoil on Earth, sending all the nations of Earth into war. The wars on Earth tied up the majority of the super heroes as they tried to avert the hostilities and keep people out of harms way. It was revealed, back on the partially destroyed Watchtower, that Lex Luthor had become possessed by Mageddon. J'onn used his abilities to psychically coordinate the heroes' counter offensive against the Injustice Gang and Mageddon. After the Gang had been forced out of the Tower, J'onn helped to exorcise the presence of Mageddon from Lex Luthor. When Luthor was freed, Superman and Orion decided to bring the fight to the weapon itself. With J'onn's and Batman's help, Superman was able to overcome the emotional barrage sent at him by the super weapon. With their influence, Superman defeated Mageddon and saved the world.
What became known as the Tower of Babel incident happened after some time. The League would soon be thrown into a crisis of conscious and some hard decisions would need to be made when all was said and done. Ra's al Ghul's daughter, Talia, some time after the Injustice Gang attacked the Watchtower, infiltrated the League's base. She would uncover secret files kept by Batman on his fellow League members. These files were detailed and listed weaknesses and possible ways to defeat each member of the League. Ra's used these files in his bid to take over the world. J'onn just happened to be the first target. J'onn, while flying over Europe, was struck down with a missile by the League of Assassins. This missile had been designed to spray a fine mist of nanites that would adhere to J'onn's cellular structure. The nanites were designed to change trace elements into magnesium, which ignites in the presence of oxygen. J'onn burst into flames and became a living inferno. J'onn was put out, temporarily, by Wonder Woman and The Flash. He was brought back to the tower where he was put inside a tank full of water to keep from igniting and to allow his body to fight off the nanites.
One by one the members of the Justice League were neutralized by the League of Assassins. Batman caught on to the plot but was unable to take blame for this crisis or to warn the League in time, cut off from the League when he confronted Ra's. Ra's sought to sow chaos among the planet's populace by emitting a supersonic audio wave that disrupted the speech recognition and language recognition centers of a person's brain. The League managed to recover and regroup with information and help from Batman. Ra's transmitter in Antarctica was destroyed. With the aid of Talia, though, the League learned that Ra's had a virus he was going to unleash on the population.
J'onn, now recovered from the nanites, joined his fellow League members in thwarting the biological attack Ra's was going to make on humanity. Ra's escaped, but the League's work was not through. Batman admitted that he had come up with contingencies to neutralize his allies within the League in case any of them went rogue. It's something very similar to what J'onn had done when the original Justice League formed, though to a greater extent. The League held a vote on whether Batman should stay within the League or be dismissed from it. J'onn reasoned that Batman did what he did to be cautious and voted for him to remain in the League. However, Superman with the deciding vote, ended up voting Batman out of the League.
After the Tower of Babel incident, J'onn and the League began to heal. Their experiences changing them slightly, in the knowledge that they can be neutralized. After some time, J'onn began to reform the Justice League Task Force. He approached the likes of Radiance and Captain Marvel Jr to join this new team. During the organization of this new Task Force, J'onn took a leave of absence from the Justice League of America. He wanted to focus on the training of the young heroes that showed potential.
During this time, Relics from the planet Krypton had been recovered by an employee of LexCorp, Charles Darius. These relics were believed to be the seperated parts of a Kyptonian God. The relics had a living presence within them and they controlled the body and will of anyone who wore them. When collected together they would possess the wearer and grant awesome powers. Radiance and J'onn would confront Charles and a battle would ensue. Charles would eventually retreat after a short but furious battle.
Not long many heroes were drawn to Metropolis to fight a new Super Villain that made her debut there. Dynamo had attacked Metropolis and that brought out many of the heavy hitters, including J'onn J'onzz. The Martian Manhunter came along with Radiance and Captain Marvel Jr. The Manhunter played support while the likes of Barda, Orion and Superman dealt with the enemy. J'onn attempted to invade the villains mind and was part of the reason for the villain's retreat. J'onn stayed behind to help Superman, Captain Marvel Jr, Radiance and rescue personel clear out a collapsing building.
J'onn was around for some time after this incident. There were numerous things the Manhunter did, but he mostly stuck to his alternate identities. He returned briefly to help out Lois Lane in a situation where she ended up being shorted to a fraction of an inch. Soon after dealing with that though, J'onn disappeared. He dropped into one of his civilian personas and has only reappeared recently.
Characteristics
Age: Unconfirmed, possibly over 1,000 years old
Height: 6'7” (can vary)
Weight: 300 lbs (can vary)
Eyes: Red
Hair: Bald
Unusual Features: Green Skin; Although obviously alien in appearance, the form that most Earthlings associate with the Martian Manhunter is not actually his true form. In his natural state of being, J'onn has a slender body, with sharp, angular features and a tapered cranium. The more muscular "beetle-brow" appearance was inspired by Saul Erdel, who convinced J'onn to assume a form derived from the literary works of science fiction authors such as Edgar Rice Burroughs and Ray Bradbury.
Personality:
Powers
Known Powers: J'onn has been called the "Swiss Army" knife of superheroes because of his wide range of abilities. Most of his powers are similar to Superman's such as, super-human strength, invulnerability, flight, and martian vision and all at power range close to Superman himself. Among those, he's able to shapeshift, become invisible, and alter his density. J'onn is also a very powerful telepath acting as the team's communication system during battle.
Genetically Modified Martian Physiology: Martian Manhunter has been described as "the Swiss Army knife of superheroes." He possesses many of the powers of Superman. Note: Many, if not all of the Martian Manhunter's powers and abilities are common to members of his race, even if demonstration of such abilities has not been explicitly shown in a canonical resource. His powers come from his alien physiology. Born of Mars over a millenia ago, from a super advanced civilization, boasting advanced technology and genetic modifications over its people, the Martian Manhunter would appear to be a genetically, modified being with incredible powers stemming from the changes made in his body. Whether this is their natural state or an advanced state given to only a few individuals is unknown. The Martian's physiology would seem to be composed of a complex molecular chain that resembles polymer bonds but with the ability to be altered at will. The mass cannot be affected but the color, relative shape, (as long as its relatively humanoid) and size, (nothing smaller than 4 feet, or taller than 9 feet), imitating even clothing if desired. The bio-polymer is extremely flexible, durable, incredibly strong for a biological material and apparently self-sustaining. No one has ever seen the Martian Manhunter eat, except for reasons of politeness or personal preference.
Martian Vision: The actual nature of this power seems to vary depending on the reports. It has been seen to be a bolt of force, directed by the Manhunter's eyes causing considerable damage, equivalent to 50-100 lbs of TNT. It has also been seen to cause flammable objects to catch fire. The range of this power is also unknown but has been seen to be effective at ranges of 500 feet or more. Judging from the infrequency of use, it must have a high energy cost or reduce the Martian's effectiveness in some way. It also grants J'onn the ability to see into other spectrums of light. J'onn can use his Martian vision to see the invisible. For example, upon their first meeting, J'onn's power allowed him to see past Gypsy's Metahuman camouflage ability (although this may also be due to the fact that Gypsy is part Martian); other effects unknown.
Telepathy: The Manhunter is considered a Class 3 telepath. He is able to read the mind of any normal human with no difficulties, assuming that human is not insane, of normal willpower and has received no special telepathic block training. Given a few seconds to concentrate, he can even read their subconscious mind as well. Has been seen mind scanning every person on Earth within a matter of minutes. Has been seen scanning the minds of people in countries surrounding him in seconds. He can read a normal mind over distances of even a mile, if he knows where the target is located. He can use his telepathy with minds that he is familiar with anyplace in the world, as long as he was attuned to that person in the first place. This telepathy extends to distances as far away as the moon, since it is known that the Martian Manhunter can communicate with Earth with his telepathy. It is not known whether there is a limit to the number of people he can be attuned to or whether there are any special requirements to being attuned to him. In addition to reading minds, the Martian Manhunter can literally reprogram the mind of a subject into believing whatever he wants them to. He can use this ability to help subjects forget things that he does not want them to remember as well as set up post-hypnotic suggestions. How long such mental conditioning lasts is unknown.
Known Abilities:
Strength Level: By Earth standards, the Martian Manhunter is one of the mightiest heroes as he possesses vast levels of superhuman strength, however on Mars J'onn possesses the strength level of an average adult male Martian in peak physical condition.

- Loyal
The Martian Manhunter is the backbone of the Justice League and its subsequent incarnations. Either being the driving force of their formations or being asked to join, J'onn is viewed as a loyal member of the League. J'onn is devoted to his colleagues and to his friends and will work hard to ensure their safety and security, both in the field, at HQ and, if need be, on a more personal level. There are very few things that J'onn would sacrifice his friendships and his loyalty for. J'onn is not easily swayed to selfish thoughts or selfish desires. J'onn would never truly entertain a bribe, a threat of harm or any other general method of coercian. This is the case, especially, if the aftermath would put his friends and compatriots in harms way. - Wise
J'onn possesses a wisdom of an individual who has seen many years come and go. It is a stark contrast to many of the younger members of the League or Super Hero community. His wisom betrays his age, even when his age is not wholly realized. J'onn can be looked upon to spout a word of advise or cautionary statement in the face of a task or metaphical hurdle.
J'onn's wisdom and advice directly lead to a perception of leadership and stability among the League and among Superheroes. J'onn is a sturdy and unfaltering individual who can be turned to for some needed advise. - Trust worthy
J'onn can often be trusted enough to be the confidante of many people. Be it other members of the League or of the Super Hero community or even while he's under dover in one of his civilian guises. J'onn is a trusting individual who be spoken to with a degree of confidence in that what you say to him will not be passed on to others. He is a consumate anti-Gossip, truly believing in the notion that if someone spoken to him in good faith that he ha sno right to betray their trust.
J'onn can also be trusted to do what is right or what needs to be done. J'onn is a hero, afterall, and that is what heroes do. When J'onn rescues someone from a collapsing building, people trust he will be there to catch them and return them to safety. When a Crisis unfolds, J'onn can be trusted to help solve the problem at hand and to think of the general well being of everyone rather than of himself. - Team player
J'onn is the Backbone of the Justice League. He is the Soul of the Justice League. He is the keystone that keeps everything together at times. J'onn could not be these things without first being a team player. He has never been one to seek the spot light or the glory. He has never been a braggart or the overwhelming moral compass of the League. He is there and working with the varied and many personalities that make up the Justice League. He can work with, adapt to and be efficient with most people he teams up with. This highly adaptable ability as well as his general modesty around other Heroes enables J'onn to be the consumate team player. - Ethical
J'onn, as well as most heroes he works with, has a code of ethics. It's a general code that allows J'onn to deal and cope with various situations he finds himself in during his adventures with the Justice League or on his own. This code, like most codes, are not flexible. There are just certain things he will not do. A job can be done without certain things happening. The most important and easily describable code would be J'onn's refusal to kill a human. J'onn is a seeker of justice not of vengeance. An individuals fate is for the courts or the governments to decide on.
Betrayal is also something J'onn is sorely against. Whether it be his own towards his comrades or others towards him. He believes that there developes a bond of trust between he and others of his community. That trust can not be broken, because he understands that to regain that trust takes a lot of work and may never be repaired. His belief is that you've set yourself on a specific past, sudden and extreme deviations from the norm can not be accepted. This concerns the certain times when his Superhero colleagues and contemporaries for one reason or another become a foe of the League. - Heroic
Above all else, J'onn J'onzz is a hero. What does a Hero mean? A Hero is an individual who puts others ahead of himself. Whether it be taking a bullet for someone or handing out a dollar bill to a begger, J'onn can be looked upon to help those in deed. J'onn is a seeker of justice and defender of the weak and innocent. He is a walking and talking Heroic Cliche, but there are reasons things become cliches. - Compassionate
J'onn is a compassionate sole who seeks to do what he can for his adopted home. He is a visitor to this planet and seeks to leave it in better condition than it was when he arrived. This is one of his core values and what makes J'onn so effective as a member of the Superhero community. J'onn is indescriminate in how he helps others. Certain heroes can only devote themselves to a town, city or sector of the Galaxy. J'onn seeks to help as many people as he can no matter where he is. No act is too small. He will approach removing a cat from a high branch of a tree with the same zeal as he would approach tense nuclear standoff with an insane extremist.
Honest
If you want an opinion on something, you go to J'onn for it. One wouldn't call J'onn blunt or foreward, but one can count on J'onn to give it to your strait. He may beat around the bush. He may try to lessen the blow of bad
news, but he will tell you with honesty and sincerity. - Reliable
J'onn does what is required of him and more. The Martian Manhunter can be trusted to perform anything asked of him, within reason. If entrusted to perform some duty or task, the Martian Manhunter will do it to the best of his considerable abilities. Despite the odds, The Manhunter has a way of getting results. Along with his other traits and talents, J'onn's reliability is what makes J'onn such a presence among other Superheroes and among the League. Whether its deciphering an alien computer program or keeping the entire league telepathically linked even in the midst of combat, J'onn can be counted on.
- Shape-Shifting, Malleability, Plasticity, Elongation: The most incredible of the powers of the Manhunter is the ability to shape-shift. He is able to literally control the molecular structure of his body's bio-polymer and make it resemble anything he wants. He can form clothing, weapons with nonmoving or nonfunctioning parts (so he could form a sword from his body's mass and it would work, but a gun would not, unless he was carrying some ammunition with him.) There does not seem to be any limit to the number of people the Manhunter can imitate and has stood in as a double for many famous people. His ability to imitate people and their mannerisms has stood him in good stead for his disguises. It is rumored that he could change his shape in more fantastic ways but has yet to be substantiated. He has recently been seen to shape-shift into the size and shape of a common house fly to enormous sizes comparable to skyscrapers. He is also able to change colors.
- Invisibility: The Manhunter can cause the bio-polymers in his body to lose his ability to reflect light, rendering the Manhunter invisible to normal light and human sight. With more increased concentration, he can render himself more invisible along the electromagnetic spectrum, including the infrared and the ultraviolet ranges of the spectrum. Such increase range, however, reduces the amount of time he can maintain his invisibility. This invisibility does not affect other senses and he could still be detected by sound, smell or touch.
- Phasing: No physical explanation of this power make sense except that it is an aspect of his psionic powers shifting his mass into another dimension or out of vibrational phase with other objects in this dimension. Whichever it is, it has been seen rarely and believed to be difficult to maintain for extended periods.
- Superhuman Durability: The Manhunter's durability is no where near Superman's level, as proven by the battle against Doomsday. Doomsday, defeated the entire Justice League with a single blow for each member. Overall, the bio-morphic structure of the Manhunter's body allows him to absorb most kinetic energies such as bullets, shrapnel or flying debris. Attacks of a nature greater than that, he can harden his bio-polymers by rebinding them and become nearly 10 times as resistant to damage as steel. Hazardous environments effect the Manhunter less than normal humans and he seems to recover from them much more quickly. He has proven to be immune to most human diseases, but no experimentation has been done to see what more advance viruses such as ebola or anthrax might have.
- Superhuman Strength: The Martian's superhuman strength comes from his plasmorphic structure formed from immensely long and complex molecular chains, augmented with his psionic and telekinetic abilities allowing him to lift incredible weights without these weights crumbling under the stress. The Martian has been seen lifting small tankers out of the ocean for short distances. By modifying the density of these bio-polymers, the Manhunter can make himself stronger by forcing the polymers into tighter bundles. At a rest state, the Manhunter can lift at least a 100 tons. Given a few minutes to reconfigure,he can lift far in excess of this amount and also he could match Superman pound for pound, but for a limited amount of time. Then the bio-polymer would begin to suffer under the strain and begin to unravel. While the Manhunter's strength can be on par with Superman, he still lacks the long term endurance and stamina of the Kryptonian. This probably has to do with the Kryptonian's storage and creation of Meta ATP which the Martian biology would not have developed being so far from the Earth's sun.
- Superhuman Endurance: J'onn's endurance is just as formidable as his strength or invulnerability. When not in the presence of fire, he can operate under extreme conditions for an indeterminate period of time without showing signs of fatigue. The exact range of this power is unknown.
- Flight: The Martian Manhunter flies by manipulation of gravitons (a subatomic particle associated with the force of gravity) manipulation of magnetic fields and control of his absolute molecular movement (a telekinetic effect). These combine to give him the ability to fly great distances with little fatigue and at great speed. He has been seen to fly at Mach 10 speeds (7690mph) in the Earth's atmosphere. Speeds faster than this cause great environmental damage and are avoided unless absolutely necessary. His bio-polymorphic skin and overall toughness make these speeds bearable and cause him no lasting injury. The Manhunter has also been seen to fly in space with no difficulty though he must hold his breath or have his own supply of oxygen in order to stay in space for long periods of time. Noting his methods of flight, he should be able to be detected with any technology that can detect graviton emissions.
- Superhuman Speed: Either through flight or natural movement, the Martian Manhunter can maintain speed and reflexes far in excess to that of a standard Earth human. Like the power of flight, this is accomplished by manipulating the magnetic fields of energy surrounding his body, as well as ambient gravitational particles. Traditionally, J'onn only uses his superhuman speed while flying. His super-speed, while impressive, is not comparable to that of the Flash. But at least enough to move in excess of escape velocity (7 miles a second) as he countlessly has escaped the Earth's gravity. He can process thoughts, move, and react at superspeed.
- Extrasensory Input: J'onn possesses nine different senses. One of these senses could account for instances of the Manhunter's perceived precognitive abilities
- Longevity: J'onn's true age is unconfirmed. Though there are clues that point to the fact that J'onn is several decades old. He does not show signs of aging, which could be a reflection of his Shapechanging abilities. Martian age much slower than humans. Where humans can live decades, sometimes a century of slightly more, J'onn will be alive for millenia, outliving most of his colleagues of this era.
- Super Hearing: The ability to hear any sound at any volume or pitch. The only Earth creature who can detect sounds at the frequency he can is a blue whale (0.01-200,000 Hz). He has shown enough control to block out ambient sounds to focus on a specific source/frequency. He can identify a person by their heartbeat, or pick out a single voice in an entire city.
- Superbreath: J'onn J'onzz possesses the ability to expel air from his mouth at speeds akin to Gale-Force winds. This ability, apparently inate to Martians, can be used in a number of situations. The most common uses one see J'onn using it for is to either put out fires or to shove back an opponent he may be fighting. This ability is very similar to Superman's own Superbreath, though the intensity is to a lesser degree.
- Infared Vision: J'onn has many powers at his disposal and his Heat Vision is one of them. It's one his truly offensive capabilities. His Heat Vision is often referred to as "Martian Vision" and shares similar characteristics with Superman's Heat Vision. Through molecular manipulation, J'onn produces powerful focused beams of heat energy in the direction he is looking. These beams of heat energy are produced from the Martian's eyes. These beams are capable of many tasks outside of combat, such as melting ice, lighting fires, and welding.
- X-Ray Vision The ability to see through anything. He can see things behind a wall as if the wall were not there, or can "peel back" layer after layer of matter in his mind. J'onn is able to focus his vision past layers of matter, literally seeing "through" them -- possibly perceiving x-rays, cosmic rays or other forms of energy invisible to normal human vision which pass through Earth's atmosphere (and solid objects) after emission from stars. Since it is passive, this ability would not generate harmful radiation in the same manner as a focused projection of hard X-rays.
- Telescopic Vision The ability to "zoom in" his distance to see something at a great distance, without violating the laws of physics. The total telescopic ability is unprecedented, but limited to some extent.
- Microscopic Vision The ability to see extremely small objects and images down to the atomic level (normal optical microscopes can only see objects down to the size of chromosomes).
- Illusions: By entering the vast realms of someone's mind, J'onn is capable of placing within it an illusion or image of his desire. Usually he uses it during interrogation situations or to aid in the capture of a criminal.
- Induce Sleep: J'onn can force the brain of any individual to turn off and revert to an unconscious state, or more simply to go to sleep.
- Mind Scans: By entering the mind, Manhunter can swiftly pass over bits of information in order to obtain quick and concise data.
- Mind Wipes: Manhunter can erase the memories of any individual simply by entering their mind and removing the memory from the cognitive receptive areas of the mind.
- Mental Shield: He can prevent other telepaths from reading his mind. With more effort and concentration, he can expand this ability and shield other people from telepathy.
- Download Information: Has demonstrated this by downloading information on how to fly a martian space ship into Batman's brain.
- Limited Mind Control: Insanity and minds that are too "different" for telepathy to work seem to be his only limits.
- Thought Sensing: The Manhunter can use the mental signature of a being to track it and can detect lifeforms by their empathic as well as telepathic signatures. He can detect whether a being is intelligent and can communicate with it empathically if it does not have a communication driven frame of reference for normal telepathy to function with. He can also detect various states of mind from anywhere in the world of the general populace in that area.
- Telepathic Relay: Other wise known as a telepathic link. As a Class 3 telepath, the Manhunter is able to use his telepathic prowess as a relay station for a group of minds, who can then "speak" to each other through him. This relaying ability seems to be limited to the same range as the Manhunters normal telepathic range.
- Telepathic Assault: The Martian Manhunter can also use his telepathic abilities in an offensive manner. He has the ability to cause mental shutdown in a target using his mental powers. This effect has a duration of about an hour and unless the target possesses mental powers of their own, do not seem to be able to resist the attack. The Manhunter does not use this power often due to the invasive nature and harshness of such a telepathic attack. Using this power also drains him considerably and reduces his telepathic effectives for a time.
- Mayavana (Formally): One of the most prized abilities of the Martians is Mayavana. It is the ability to reach into another mind and create a mental reality as real as any normal reality. The strain of Mayavana is such that it can only be used once in a life time, and so is normally used on the one that a Martian loves the most. J'onn used it on the rampaging Despero so that he thought that he had destroyed the JLH (subsequently he reverted to an embryonic state) and therefore saved his friends.
Known Abilities:
- Detective
The Martian Manhunter has developed into quite the Detective over the years. J'onn is quite skilled at solving crimes. He is able to pick out clues in various situations, even without the aid of his powers. J'onn does not claim the mantle of greatest detective, nor will he. His detective work takes second fiddle with his work with the Justice League. Investigation is something J'onn does in his own time and is considered to be quite the competant Private Investigator. His skill is far below the level of Batman, but adaquate to put him among some of the better investigators Police Agencies could offer. - Acting
It is not enough for J'onn to be able to shift his appearance into that of a homeless man or a business man. J'onn needs to act the part. This is something he has learned to do over time, but not with considerable effort. J'onn has found himself 'falling into character' quite often after taking the guise of someone else. He has honed this skill and has become quite convincing when he's disguised himself as others. - Intimidation
Often an intimidating appearance is enough to achieve the goals that J'onn intends to. However some people just are not shaken by him simply changing his looks or growing a foot or two taller. When that occurs and he does not want to resort to his mental abilities, J'onn has learned from his fellow Leaguers some extra methods. Flying others up into the air, giving them the perception that they'll be dropped, modulating the volume or intensity of his voice, posturing in a threatening manner. All of these techniques and more can be utilized by J'onn, especially when he intends to keep a cover while not in his Martian Manhunter guise. - Hand to hand combat
Through the numerous struggles and countless hours of training himself, J'onn has developed into an adaquate hand to hand combatant. He can brawl with the best of them. J'onn incorporates a number of styles into his personal form. Mixing his various Martian styles with boxing, wrestling and various forms of martial arts have created a unique style all J'onn's. He is able to slug it out with some of the best of them. - Knowledge
Though J'onn is an impressive physical specimen, it is J'onn's mind that is truly heroic. Forget his incredible mental abilities. His thirst for knowledge and his retention of just about anything he reads or studies is truly amazing. J'onn has been known to study Philosphy, Mathematics, Computer Programming, The Languages of Earth, History of Earth as well as some of the more advanced sciences. This is all pretty light reading for the Martian. This gives J'onn a wide assortment of knowledge and makes him well versed in most topics. - Tactician and leader
J'onn has developed into a stunning Field Leader as a member of the Justice League. His organizational skills and his quick thinking provide him with a keen tactical mind. He's able to formulate tactics and postulate outcomes very quickly while in the middle of battle. J'onn may be a good leader in the field, but that is not where his tactical mind ends. What makes him good at finding a weakness in battle also lends itself to less serious persuits. J'onn has become quite adept at games of strategy such as Chess as well as picking apart arguements and forming a cohesive and powerful debate. - Stealth
Sometimes J'onn finds himself in a situation where turning invisible will just not do and that he needs to Shadow someone or to beldn in with a crowd or a group. J'onn can move with a high degree of silence without the aid of his powers. Though his ability to do with with his powers is immense, doing without his abilities is still good enough to fool your typical mook on the street that he may be following or enough to keep him from standing out in a crowd. - Problem solving
J'onn has a very intuitive and quizzicle mind. That is to say, J'onn loves a good mystery or puzzle. J'onn has mind that is powerful both in abilities both superhuman and what can be considered human. J'onn has a tremendous ability to solve problems. Problems can range from a simple crozzword puzzle to a cracking a code that will stop the countdown on a global terrorist attack. Given enough time, J'onn can figure out a pattern or method to any problem or situation. - Science
J'onn has a scientific mind. He thirsty for knowledge and science offers to quench that thirst. Though he's not a specialized scientist, J'onn has read and done enough research in his life of both Earth-bound and Alien sciences that J'onn is quick to pick up on the topic if certain phrases or words are mentioned. - Computer operations
Perhaps it is because J'onn is from an advanced race of beings from Mars, or perhaps he's been around advanced computers for the majority of his life. Whatever the reason behind it is, J'onn has become quite proficient at operating computers; Both personal and super. J'onn has learned the basics of computer hacking. He knows a number of common and uncommon programming languages, both Alien and Human. - Willpower
J'onn powerful mental abilities are augmented by his Willpower. J'onn's will has been trained and honed for years. Through rigorous training and mental exercises, The Martian Manhunter has become one of the most powerful telepaths on Earth. J'onn's will also helps him resist other telepaths with numerous mental barriers and defenses. The Manhunter has also become impressively resistant to interrogation and torture, were he ever to be put under such situations. The only exception to his powerful resistance of interrogation and influence would be if under the threat of fire. Due to his psychosymatic response to fire, J'onn's mental abilities and defenses whither away. - Manipulation
J'onn knows the in and outs of manipulating others for his benefit. A few choice words or a little intimidation among other things can be used to get people to perform certain tasks for the Manhunter without the use of his mental abilities. With his mental abilities it's just inputing the mere desire to do something. However without resorting to such methods, J'onn can get people to give him names, divulge some information, anything that'll lead him to another clue or solving a problem. - Psionics
J'onn J'onnz is perhaps the most skilled and powerful telepath on the planet. Martians possess great mental abilities, which eclipse that of normal human beings. He is perhaps the most knowledgeable individual pertaining to psionics and the use of those abilities. He has had centuries of practice and time to hone his immense skill. He has a practicing knowledge of just about every psionic technique available. There may be some beings that surpass him in sheer power, but there would be very few to surpass him in skill.
Strength Level: By Earth standards, the Martian Manhunter is one of the mightiest heroes as he possesses vast levels of superhuman strength, however on Mars J'onn possesses the strength level of an average adult male Martian in peak physical condition.
Weaknesses:
- Oreo cookies
No body is perfect, everyone has their vices. J'onn's vice? An unhealthy love of Oreo Cookie Sandwiches. Those rich creamy centers sandwiched between two crispy chocolatey wafers. J'onn has developed a sweet tooth for these tiny packages of goodness. One can blame Captain Marvel's influence for J'onn's love of America's Favorite Cookie. This obsession for this particular brand of cookie is not debilitating and not all consuming, it's just J'onn can not help himself. When offered Oreos, most people would take one or two politely. J'onn on the other hand would take the entire package. - Fire
Even with all of his powers, J'onn is not completely impervious and is not without something to lead to his downfall. J'onn possesses a weakness to Fire. This weakness is both phyiscal and psychological. It is a weakness that is innate to his very being. It seems to be a weakness all Martians have. It is an irrational and unexplainable weakness. Of all the things the mighty Martian Manhunter could be weak to or scared of, it has to be fire. Though through the years, J'onn has trained and worked to try and overcome his Pyrophobia. It is something that J'onn must struggle with and work at. Though when situations are dire and J'onn is forced to confront his fears, he tends to tough it out and deal with it to save the day. - Enemies
J'onn does not possess a Rogues Gallery in the sense that Batman, The Flash or Superman have. What J'onn does have is a number of villains that he has fought over the years, either by himself or as a member of the various incarnations of the Justice League. Though he has tackled most of the Justice League's foes with the help of the League as a team. J'onn is not always in the company of the League. There is nothing to stop an old League enemy from trying to tackle J'onn while he's alone or out of contact with the League.
