Real name: Courtney Whitmore
Alter Ego: Stargirl, (formerly) Star Spangled Kid III
Inspired, or rather appalled, by the original Star Spangled Kid costume, Courtney made her own version, a rather more feminine, clinging and... brief version of the be-starred outfit. Consisting of blue Bike shorts with a white stripe down the sides and around the legs, a tight half-shirt lycra top with long sleeves, a pair of red gloves and her red-laced Moc Darten boots, not to mention the little blue mask, she cuts quite the figure fighting crime.

History
Stargirl is one of the more powerful members of the JSA, thanks to her cosmic rod and converter belt. She has developed from a bit of a brat to a well-rounded heroine. She is best friends with Hawkgirl and is also close to Power Girl, whom Courtney considers a role model of sorts. As well, she has started to befriend the new Supergirl, Kara Zor-El. (Ironically, in the Justice League Unlimited episode "Chaos at the Earth's Core", Supergirl and Stargirl were portrayed as rivals, although by the end of the episode, the two appeared to start to form a friendship.) Early in her superhero career, Courtney was invited to join Young Justice; she declined, since she was already a member of the JSA, but she remained a reserve member. Courtney often trusts and stands up for those whom other members of the team seemingly distrust, such as Atom Smasher, or Brainwave. She has also developed good leadership skills and courage, often throwing herself directly into harm's way. She can also be quite violently effective when angered. After Courtney's family was killed by Per Degaton's Forces (incident later erased from history) she utilized the rod to disintegrate all of the attackers.
As well as her relationships with Atom Smasher and Captain Marvel, Courtney is the object of a crush held by Jakeem Thunder. She has also been stalked by Solomon Grundy who was at one point obsessed with her.
Stars and Stripe
Stargirl, who was previously called Star-Spangled Kid, is Courtney Whitmore, stepdaughter of Pat Dugan. The character was created by Geoff Johns, who is said to have based her personality on that of his sister who tragically died in TWA Flight 800. Johns is an avid fan of Captain Carrot and the Zoo Crew and Courtney's original outfit was quite similar to Zoo Crew member Yankee Poodle's.
Courtney Whitmore found Sylvester Pemberton's gear in her stepfather's belongings and donned the costume in order to annoy him as partial revenge for marrying her mother and supposedly forcing the family to move from Los Angeles to Blue Valley, Nebraska. Dugan, a skilled mechanic, designed and built S.T.R.I.P.E., a Powered Armor which he rides in to accompany and protect her.
JLA/JSA
Eventually, she joined the Justice Society of America and, after being given Starman's (Jack Knight's) cosmic rod/staff, changed her identity to Stargirl. Courtney has appeared in most issues of JSA and it was in these pages that her little sister Patricia Dugan was born.
Despite a glimpse into the future, which showed an adult Starwoman married to Albert Rothstein (a.k.a. fellow JSA member Atom Smasher), Courtney briefly dated another JSA member, Captain Marvel, who in actuality is a teenage boy named Billy Batson. However, Captain Marvel was, by all appearances to those not knowing Billy's secret, an adult, and the seemingly pedophiliaic relationship between Marvel and Stargirl drew the attention of JSA members Jakeem Thunder and Jay Garrick, the original Flash. After being confronted by Garrick over the issue, Marvel chose to leave the JSA - and Courtney - instead of telling the team his secret. Marvel has recently reappeared in the JSA and revealed he can't give his identity due to the wisdom of Solomon blocking him.
Courtney's family was murdered by agents of Per Degaton. She traveled with the rest of the JSA back to 1951. The time-traveling adventure featured the newest versions of classic JSA members meeting and fighting alongside the originals to try to save her family and the future. While there, she found herself forced to work with Atom Smasher again, for the first time since he defected to Black Adam's rival team. Following this, she apparently forgave him, but Atom Smasher was then nearly murdered by The Spectre. Though Atom Smasher was saved, the events clearly revealed the depth of feeling she has for him. She was quite relieved to return after this time-travelling adventure to see that her family was still alive.
Recently Atom Smasher was tried and convicted for actions he took while working for Black Adam, during a TV appearance Courtney stated that even though he was in prison she would "Wait for him"
Infinite Crisis
During the Infinite Crisis, Courtney was approached by the Shade, who told her of the final demise of her biological father. The tragedy, and the witnessing of the love between Liberty Belle and Jesse Quick, a love even stronger than their strained family bond, led her to rethink her family life. She discovered that she couldn't hate her biological father, even for being an absentee, a slacker and even a supervillain thug, but learned from the tragedy to accept Pat Dugan as the first true paternal figure in her life.
While other members of the Justice Society were phased from the main Earth to the new Earth-Two, Whitmore along with teammates Mister Terrific and Doctor Mid-Nite remained, revealing that they would not have been native to Earth-Two.
Stargirl survived the Crisis largely intact, and has begun attending college. She has changed her equipment: her rod now compresses to a small cylinder, and when she activates it, her costume and belt appear while the rod grows to full size. She has started to take driving lessons from Mr. Terrific.
Characteristics
Age: 18
Height: 5'5”
Weight: 110 lbs
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Blonde
Unusual Features: None
Personality: The one word that best describes Courtney would be perky. She's a bouncy, happy, ball of energy that seems to always have a smile on her face. Even for a teenage girl, she's pretty up most of the time. It's hard to really get her down for a long time. Death, break-ups and defeat seem to be the only things to make a permanent impact on her happiness. Courtney is nothing if not courageous. She's more then willing to put herself on the line to help others, especially her friends. It's not that she's not scared, she once in a while has terrible dreams about some of the things she's done, it's just that at the moment she needs to be, fear is put to the side and she does what she believes needs doing. Courtney has a Rebellious streak a mile and a half long, she will state her opinion in the contrary when she thinks adults are being bull-headed and wrong.
Everything about Courtney seems to be designed to draw attention. She loves bright colors, loud music, malls and just being alive. At her age and in her chosen profession, she figures that life is meant to be lived to it's utmost and fullest. Being a teenager, Courtney finds adults to be tedious and plodding. They never do anything fast enough for her. Despite all her desire to be older and respected and listened to and left alone, Courtney is still a kid at heart. She loves just hanging out with friends, not worry about a job, wasting time just talking on the phone and wandering around the Mall on a Summer's day.
Courtney is proud to be an American, proud of what her country has accomplished. She knows that not everything the USA has done or will do is right and good, but heck, it's the best country ever, it can be forgiven the occasional mis-step as long as it learns from them. She hates people bashing the USA, hates anyone saying it's bad or faulty or wrong. Especially outsiders from other places. Courtney has faith, deep, religious-type faith in what she's doing and the people around her. She believes in the JSA more then she's believed in anything else in her entire life. It's like a family, but more then that, it's like finding a place where she can go and just be herself, devote herself to something completely.
Ever since she was a kid, Courtney's been striving to be the best. Blame her upbringing in the dog-eat-dog world of Beverly Hills public high school or her once obsession with being Head Cheerleader (which she never achieved thanks to having to move) but Courtney simply has to compete with people her own age for status, praise and prestige. She gets a bit irritable if anyone shows her up. While Courtney is usually a very perky, happy young woman, she doesn't like having people in positions of authority dismiss her ideas or tell her to be quiet. When faced with no other option to relieve her upset feelings, she tends to fold her arms over her chest, sits somewhere and brood. Courtney can't stand bullies! She can't stand people in stronger positions be it social, physical or even work-related pushing people with lesser status around.
Powers
Known Powers: Courtney Whitmore, or Stargirl has no natural superhuman powers. Her abilities stem from the use of the Cosmic Converter Belt and the cosmic rod. These devices channeled an unknown form of stellar radiation which allows Stargirl to manipulate through mental connection to the rod. With the help of the cosmic rod she possesses the ability to fly, project bursts of stellar energy, light, and heat, create force fields, levitate objects, and occasionally manipulate energy in a manner similar to the Green Lantern members.
Known Abilities: Courtney is skilled in gymnastics and kickboxing.
Strength Level: Courtney's strength level is reasonable for a young woman of her age and physique who trains on a normal basis. With the help of the cosmic converter she has enhanced strength.
Weaknesses:

Equipment: the Cosmic Converter Belt
Transportation: Pat Dugan provided her with a car for her birthday. Although Courtney has yet to realize it, the car is actually a modified version of the original Star-Rocket Racer, once used by her predecessor Sylvester Pemberton.

- Cosmic Rod
- Energy Constructs: A simple form of lygokinesis, Stargirl is able to mold light, and form it into a solid projectile or object of her choice. Normally, it takes on the form of whiplashes, streams of energy, or anything else her teenage mind will allow her. In a way, it is similar to the power of the Green Lantern Corps and their rings.
- Flight: With the help of the rod, Stargirl is able to control gravity, and ultimately enable flight on her behalf. She's able to fly at an uncanny speed, allowing her to get from place to place. In addition, Courtney has a habit of riding her cosmic rod like a witch's broom stick.

Strength Level: Courtney's strength level is reasonable for a young woman of her age and physique who trains on a normal basis. With the help of the cosmic converter she has enhanced strength.
Weaknesses:
- Dependant: Courtney has no job and lives with her Mom and Pat Dugan (her step-father) she's dependant on them for cash and transportation. Worse yet, her Mom could be used against her were any of her enemies to find out Star Spangled Kid's true Identity.
- Hard-Headed: Courtney is sometimes pretty stubborn, not listening to the advice of the adults, no matter how sensible it sounds or is. She just hates being told what to do when it conflicts with her own agenda. This tends to get her into trouble and occasionally even in danger.
- Inexperienced: Even with her year or so of experience, she's still nowhere near the skill level of her teammates in the JSA. She's a rookie, she knows she is and she still makes rookie mistakes from time to time. "Hey What's this red button for?" JSA Adults: "Don't push it!" Courtney: "Ooops. Sorry."
- Shiv: Every hero or heroine has his/her arch-enemy, Batman has the Joker, Superman has Lex Luthor, Aquaman had Black Manta and Star Spangled Kid has Shiv. Shiv is actually one of Courtney's former classmates from Blue Valley High, the top-dog on the social totem pole, Cindy. Head Cheerleader and Queen of the School, she was also the Daughter of a super-villain and one in her own right. She clashed in her civilian life with Courtney and in her costumed identity with Star Spangled Kid. She hates Courtney and SSK so much that she's actually planned to have them assasinated. Shiv's recent alliance with the Injustice Society has only made her a bigger threat then before.
- Injustice Society: Being a member of the JSA, Star Spangled Kid automatically falls under the 'hurt or kill on sight' clause of the Injustice Society. Though not the most powerful member of the JSA, she is a target of opportunity and as one of their weaker members who is forced to spend a lot of time in her civilian ID, she makes an attractive target indeed to get at the others.
- Impulsive: Yeah, much like a lot of young people her age, Courtney's impatient nature tends to make her leap before she looks. She's been known to charge ahead into an unknown, potentially dangerous situation before evaluating what's going on. It's one of the reasons she requires adult supervision. On her own, she's liable to get hurt until she can settle down a bit more.
- Still Mortal: Cosmic rod, and Cosmic Converter Belt, quite the help, but that doesn't mean that she's invulnerable. Courtney is still human, and a teenager at that, she's no stronger than your peak human, and certainly can't survive a spray of bullets, a poisonous gas attack, or even a razor blade to the throat. Sure she's got neat-o tricks and tools, but that's never enough to what comes down to the fact that's she's human. She's gone down before, she's not afraid to admit that, but she's gone down trying, but there's only so much poor Courtney can take before she'll keep over and play dead.
