It matters greatly to him what other people think of him because he believes, as a hero, it is his responsibility to set or adhere to certain standards of living and behavior. He has an unwavering sense of justice and believes everyone must be held accountable for their actions, especially those with power. He usually considers his words carefully before deigning to speak and then voices them in absolute severity. He also listens to others and tries, without always succeeding, to understand outside opinions, ideas, and advice. He is capable of maintaining silence for hours and even days; he prefers the role of a patient observer and waits for the opportune moment to speak or act. He hardly ever lightens up and possesses almost no sense of humor. The universe contains an as much beauty as it houses threats against life as we know it. John has survived only an infinitesimal fraction of the dangers that the universe has to offer. His education as a Green Lantern has opened his mind to the knowledge of many, many more dangers than he ever believed possible. His cultivated experience and awareness has shaped him into a cautious and prepared individual. He rarely, if ever, lowers his guard as a result of his acquired perspective on the “real” reality of things. John is not terrified of the dangers neighboring or housed on Earth; he is simply aware of them and takes the threats, like all other things in his life, seriously. Whenever John actually feels fear threatening to consume his thoughts, he tries overcoming it through a show of confidence either through words or action. He knows he is capable of great things with or without his Power Ring and it usually only takes a little reminder on his or someone else's part for him to conquer fear. His father was an alcoholic and regularly abused his mother for years. John can still recall his earliest memory of lying awake in his bed and crying as he heard, through the near-paper-thin walls of their hovel, Mommy shriek in pain at every solid impact of Daddy’s fists. His old man eventually left her and her three children to fend for themselves. Having never experienced a true father figure in his life, John did not notice much of a difference in his existence after his father had abandoned the family. He casually observed the eventual fade of bruises on his mother as though a dark chapter in their lives was slowly closing. He could not understand why his mother continued crying at night after their tormentor had left their lives. He did not understand the concept of love at the time because little, if any, had been issued to him. Without anyone to teach him the difference between right and wrong, John began acting out against society at a young age. By the time he had turned nine years old, he had been escorted, often, back home by police. The local PD had placed multiple charges against him for vandalism and other such petty crimes. His early criminal activity only made his mother cry harder and sent her spiraling deeper into her depressive state, but John did not care. His mother had always been like that as far as he was concerned and he had already decided that it was beyond his power to help her. John developed great hatred toward authority figures early on. His father had never been the man John later discovered that he was supposed to be. His school teachers had given up all hope of him improving and he frequently landed himself in detention or worse. Police never had anything positive to say to him either and they often looked at him as though he was a pile of trash stinking up the backseat of their car. When John was only ten years old, he stole his aunt’s car and took his younger sister, Rose, for a joyride. Instead of a police cruiser ending his illegal fun on that particular night, however, a drunk driver smashed into the car. John survived the accident and spent only a few weeks in the hospital for his stupidity. When he next woke in the pediatric ward, he learned that his sister had died almost instantly from the collision. The trauma of the knowledge was so intense that he shoved most of the memories of the horrible event he had caused to the darkest reaches of his mind and locked them away for a long time. Growing Up: He changed drastically after the incident; he started performing excellently in school. After having nearly lost his life, he immediately learned the value of it and had decided not to waste his any longer. He decided that he needed to change his life and work toward a better future for himself. Teachers actually began taking notice of him. He found it strange to have adults look at him with anything other than contempt. For the first time in his life, he began feeling like people around him cared whether he lived or died. He certainly cared if he continued living, but he maintained a depressing degree of sadness that filled one of his educators with concern. In an attempt to cheer John up and give him a reason to laugh and grin, one of his teachers introduced him to the Justice Guild of America comic books, which were artistic renditions of the actual JGA’s exploits. The stories were filled with lousy catchphrases, corny villains, plots with more holes in them than termite-infested Swiss cheese, and surreal “moral of the story” endings. John adored the heroes and their adventures nonetheless because the comics showed a world where no one was seriously injured or killed. They offered him a distraction to all the suffering he had endured, self-inflicted and otherwise. They helped him heal a little inside and began shaping him into the hero he would become much later on. US Marine Corps: He later enlisted in the United States Marine Corps shortly after graduating from High School. He needed money to pay for a college education and he wanted to serve and protect his country just like the heroes he continued admiring. His military training strengthened him and sharpened his reflexes. He became proficient in hand-to-hand combat and even more so with a rifle. He was then shipped overseas to fight real battles that were nothing like the safe stories of the JGA he had enjoyed as a child. Being a hero for his country came at a steep price and it was paid for in full by the blood of enemies and allies alike. John served as a sniper and it is one of the most dangerous jobs that any military has to offer. A sniper has to rely on their rifle, but it is absolutely useless in a firefight; for that reason, a sniper must remain hidden and fervently hope or pray that no enemy finds them. A sniper’s duty is that of an assassin; they must shoot to kill every time because each shot discharged may alert an enemy to their hiding spot. Snipers rarely use silencers because such devices decrease range and accuracy. In war, a sniper’s top priority is to locate and kill enemy snipers who are also hidden (Hundreds of yards if not multiples of miles away) and attempting to kill said sniper. Soldiers often relied on John to protect them in enemy territory, but not everyone survived the battles in which John was involved. John felt every loss he witnessed and also felt a piece of his soul disintegrate whenever he shot to kill. Each thunderous crack from his weapon resurfaced memories in the back of his mind of metal crushing metal and the body of a helpless little girl. The war reopened and aggravated wounds that had never fully healed because they could never fully heal. His only consolation for his actions was that many more of his comrades would have perished if he had refused to squeeze the trigger. Education and Graduation: John returned to US soil as a changed man. He received his payment from the government for shedding the blood of those his superiors pointed their fingers at. He then decided to atone for the deaths he had caused and for all the lives he had failed to save. He promised himself to spend his life to creating new things from which the world could benefit. He attended university where he majored in architecture and, after years of hard work, dedication, and struggling, he graduated with a Master’s degree. He then went on to become an architect to realize and fulfill his goals. He had no way of knowing that the morals and sense of justice he acquired by reading comics, the training and combat experience he received in the Marine Corps, and the architectural skills and knowledge he obtained at university would serve him well after one impossibly huge incident in his life. A New Kind of Corps: Much of the world watched a tragic news story unfold on television and John was one of the many members of the audience. One of Earth’s heroes, the Green Lantern, had been severely injured while rescuing a school student from a bus during an earthquake. The Green Lantern was rushed to the hospital in critical condition in an ambulance escorted by an enormous procession of police cars. No other details were released at that time other than the fact there were no casualties from the earthquake thanks, in part, to the efforts of the Green Lantern. The last thing John Stewart expected that night as he went to bed was the Power Ring of one incapacitated super hero finding its way into his home. He had just turned out all the lights in his house and had locked all his doors and his windows and even armed his security system. No thieves would get into his home! He was about to fall asleep when the familiar sound of glass shattering reached his ears. He turned on a bedside lamp, pulled a hand gun out from a drawer and stepped out of bed, wearing only a pair of boxers, to “deal with” his intruder. He stopped just in front of his bedroom door where a green light issued through the crack below. He immediately thought that aliens were invading his home. He checked to make sure the safety of his weapon was off then cocked it. If it bleeds…right? Something knocked incessantly at his door, but it sounded nothing like a hand. It sounded more like a small rock bouncing against the door as though possessed. John cautiously opened the door and trained his gun ahead of him. He discovered only a free-floating and brightly glowing green object occupying minute space beyond the threshold. It was a Green Lantern Power Ring; something he knew next to nothing about. “Okay?” He managed to say; what else could he think to say in that absolutely bizarre moment? The ring chose that moment to shoot forward; a shocked former marine squeezed the trigger, but the bullet struck only the ceiling because the ring had powerfully smacked his hand to throw off his aim. John accidentally dropped the gun, seized his wrist, and fully opened his smarting hand. Seemingly satisfied with a job well done, the ring slipped itself onto an appropriate finger and contented itself with that position. The ring then replaced his clothing (the aforementioned pair of boxers) with that of a Green Lantern’s uniform. John ran into the bathroom adjoining his bedroom and switched on the light to stare into the mirror to inspect himself. He had become a masked superhero; more specifically, he had been made into a Green Lantern! He stared in silence for several seconds then declared, “Okay, if we’re going to do this, we’re going to do it my way.” The mask vanished from his face; he smirked. The ring then propelled him upward; he frightfully shielded his face with one arm and expected to collide with the ceiling, but both he and the ring passed through the roofing of his house without damaging him or the house. He looked down for a moment and located the window the ring had shattered. “Someone’s going to pay for that and it’s not going to be me,” He remarked; it was his way of dealing with the situation that was becoming "curioser and curioser" by the second. He could have been afraid that he was rapidly ascending many miles into the air. The reality that he had quickly breached the atmosphere could have terrified him. He, instead, felt a strange sense of exhilaration that only grew as the ring kept him warm, safe, and supplied with breathable air and pushed him far beyond the edge of the solar system. He had embarked on a journey few humans before him had ever experienced; he meant to enjoy it. A part of him coped with the events by believing it was all a dream inspired by the recent Green Lantern-related news report. He accelerated to impossible speeds, incomprehensible speeds, but the ring seemed to know its job and John trusted it to carry it out. There was nothing else he could do and he dared not try anything stupid so incomprehensibly far from home. He observed, during his intergalactic voyage, alien stars, planets, and even the space in between galaxies devoid of light, heat, and substance outside the protection of the Power Ring. The cosmos eventually became an indefinable blur as the ring carried him through a great deal of it at countless times the speed of light. He noticed when the ring began decelerating; he saw their unmistakable destination ahead. “Oa,” He breathed aloud. How had he known the name of the planet? The ring, he realized, must have somehow told him; more information poured into his brain, but it was too much and too soon. “Enough!” He commanded; the ring obeyed and the crash course education ceased at 'A Brief Introduction to Antimatter Physics and Equations for Particle Engineering and Design...Chapter 1'. He entered the planet’s atmosphere and simply continued observing as the ring carried him toward his destination. The ring directed him to the chamber of the Guardians. The ring had already informed him that they were all as old as time and they were the creators of the Green Lantern Corps and the commissioners of those who joined its ranks. Many of them were seated all around him and positioned far above him. They had gathered to witness his arrival, the arrival of the newest addition to the Green Lantern Corps. It made him wonder. Who was he, a mere human from Earth, to receive attention from the greatest and most ancient minds in the universe? His audience was brief and few words were spoken between them. He recalled correctly that only one Guardian spoke the entire time. The Guardian mentioned him by name, which almost surprised him until he remembered how he had learned the name of their planet. The guardians summoned another Green Lantern into the chamber and that was when John felt more surprised than ever since his departure from Earth. Hal Jordan stepped forward; he and John had met one another back on Earth and learned a little about each other. Hal clearly knew more about John than he did about him because Hal immediately objected to John’s induction to the Corps. He declared John unfit for service because of his stubborn and independent nature. “Too late; I’m already here. Get used to it,” John said; the emotionless Guardians appeared in agreement with John. The decision had been made and Hal did not succeed in changing it. John eventually decided that he was not dreaming sometime during his brief training under Hal Jordan within their assigned sector. He learned the key basics of his ring. His instruction was left unfinished when Hal resigned from the Green Lantern Corps for reasons John did not understand at the time. John would have been more than happy to learn more about his powers and responsibilities on his own and through improvisation, but the Guardians had other plans for him. Love, Loss, Past, Present, and Future: Katma Tui picked up his training where Hal had left off. When he first laid eyes on her beautiful form, John believed he had just been upgraded to first class. He accepted the Guardians’ decision without complaint. He stayed with “Kat” for a little while longer even after he had graduated from trainee to full-time Green Lantern. Their relationship transcended its professional status. He enjoyed working with her and she enjoyed his company. They opened up to each other; no one on Earth had managed to unlock John's heart, but "Kat" had all the keys. When had he surrendered them and himself over to her completely? Did it matter? He told her of the mistakes he made and the regrets he had and she told him of hers. Neither of them, it seemed, was perfect. They were two incomplete halves made whole in each other's presence. He eventually had to return to Earth, but they both promised to see each other again. Neither of them would be able to keep that promise, unfortunately. Katma would later perish, but John had become a better and somewhat softer man from her tutelage and from their time spent together. He had certainly improved as a Green Lantern. He went on to join the Justice League and presently aids both the League and the Corps dutifully. In some ways, Katma's death refined John as a Green Lantern. She had trained him and stolen his heart. He would march forward into the future, which he decreed he would make bright with the power entrusted to him by the Guardians. He would honor the memory of his late lover by using everything she had taught him, which covered much more than a Power Ring.[/style] [STYLE=color: #191919; font-size: 10px; margin-top: 10px; margin-left: 10px;]POWERS AND ABILITIES[/style][STYLE= margin: 0px 10px 0px 10px; border: 2px solid #191919; padding: 2px; font-family: verdana; height: 125px; overflow: auto; font-size: 11px; color: #000000; text-align: justify; background-color: #ffffff; opacity: 0.8] KNOWN POWERS: None KNOWN ABILITIES:

[li]Natural Durability and Life Support: A Green Lantern’s power ring protects its wielder by increasing their durability and providing life support functions. This makes the wielder about as tough as pure iron. The ring automatically protects its wielder from sickness, disease, poison, gases, radiation, etc. A Green Lantern may share this benefit with others by focusing their will onto them.
[/li][li]Energy Constructs: The power ring is primarily a tool capable of transforming the wearer’s thoughts into physical constructs. As long as a Green Lantern has the necessary amount of willpower, they can create virtually anything they imagine. The constructs are composed of Green Energy, which is defined as a tangible form of willpower. A Green Lantern’s constructs as long as they fuel it with their will. Constructs are not indestructible and neither are they permanent. A construct’s capabilities, durability, and power are all limited to the Green Lantern’s will.
[/li][li]Energy Absorption and Projection: A Power Ring can absorb all manner of energy, but energy absorbed by the ring does not recharge it. Only a Power Battery may recharge a Green Lantern’s ring. A Green Lantern may discharge whatever energy their ring absorbs. The ring can also emulate any form of energy including the radiation that Kryptonite emits.
[/li][li]Flight and Interstellar Travel: A Green Lantern’s power ring bestows them with the ability of flight. A Green Lantern may, in theory, fly anywhere including areas that are absolutely inhospitable towards most, if not all, life forms, including the vacuum of space as a result of the Life Support functions of the ring. A Green Lantern may exceed light speed without risking the danger of possibly fatal impacts against small or microscopic space debris. Gravitational stresses, which could cause injury, are also stabilized by a power ring. A Green Lantern may also access and use wormholes in space. A Green Lantern may also offer others transportation via bubble, a craft constructed from Green Energy, or by simply surrounding them with energy and towing them along among other possibilities.
[/li][li]Force Fields: A Green Lantern may easily surround their bodies in protective Green Energy. It protects a Green Lantern from massive amounts of damage and may be expanded to cover a large area to offer others similar protection. A Green Lantern with enough willpower may also generate multiple force fields for many people or areas.
[/li][li]Uniforms: The Green Lantern's uniform is not made out of fabric. It is created by the Power Ring whenever the wearer wills to wear it. It automatically appears over the wearer's normal clothing, and vanishes when the wearer wills to return to their civilian attire. Each Green Lantern is able to adjust their uniform to fit their own needs, personalities and whims.
[/li][li]Communication: The Power Rings can be used as communicators between Power Ring wearers even if they are not of the same Corps. Communication transpires instantaneously even from across sectors.
[/li][li]Energy Double: A Green Lantern may create a Green Energy version of themselves and control the actions of the double and share their experiences remotely. A Green Lantern must remain motionless and focus their entire will on the double or it will cease to exist. The energy double can travel billions of times faster than light. The double may not influence its surroundings and is invisible to everyone excluding Guardians and other Power Ring wielders.
[/li][li]Regeneration and Healing: A Green Lantern’s power ring accelerates the wearer’s natural healing process by up to sixteen times. A Green Lantern may also heal others.
[/li][li]Scanning: The ring has a wide range of detection abilities. If it can be conceived it can probably be detected. Most normal electromagnetic phenomena are within the range of the ring, including radio, television, infrared, ultraviolet, and high frequency band communications.
[/li][li]Phasing: The power ring allows the wearer to pass through otherwise impenetrable matter. The direct limitations of this power are not yet known.
[/li][li]Invisibility and Light Refraction: A Green Lantern may render themselves invisible by willing the ring to bend light waves around his form, as well as that of the power ring.
[/li][li]Emergency Beacon: A Green Lantern in distress can use their power ring as an emergency beacon. The alert can be directed to a Green Lantern's neighboring sector or it can be a Corps-wide alert.
[/li][li]Homing Beacon: A homing beacon in the power ring can lead one Green Lantern to another. A Green Lantern not wishing to be found may also command their ring not to transmit the beacon.
[/li][li]Time Travel: The ring wielder can travel through time, but more willpower is required for distant leaps.
[/li][li]Power Ring Duplication: A Green Lantern may duplicate his Power Ring and bestow the temporary rings onto others for use. Each duplicate shares the qualities and capabilities of the original ring. A Green Lantern usually does not do this because the duplicates drain the original ring of its power as they are used.
[/li][li]Preset Commands: A Green Lantern may program their power ring to execute commands at a later date even if the ring is not being worn.
[/li][li]Psychic Interference: A Green Lantern may use Green Energy to guard themselves from any form of mind-tampering. A common method of activating this function is creating a a Green Energy accessory to block out psychic energy such as special ear plugs. A Green Lantern may easily bestow others with similar protection.
[/li][li]Omni-Power: All the above powers are actual the most common uses of the Power Ring. The ring is capable of virtually anything. The wearer could even fuel his willpower straight into strength. Hal Jordan has done this and was nearly as strong as Superman. Less frequently used capabilities include splitting atoms and manipulating sub-atomic particles (effectively producing new elements), and simulating forms of radiation (such as that emitted by green Kryptonite).
[/li][li]Artificial Intelligence: Every Power Ring has a connection to the Central Power Battery on Oa which allows the rings to tap into an Artificial Intelligence (AI). The wearer typically interfaces with the AI by addressing the ring verbally. It is presumed that the wearer can also silently communicate with the ring through their willpower. The ring can either respond aloud or communicate silently to the wearer.
[/li][li]The Ring's AI has access to a large database of information which can be crucial to the success of a Green Lantern's mission. Upon request and, occasionally, without prompting, the ring provides the wearer with important information pertaining to a given situation and may even suggest a useful course of action.
[/li][li]The AI can also perform valuable scans of the wearer's surroundings. The power ring passively scans an area of approximately 100 meters around the Green Lantern at all times and warns the wearer of any potential threats. A Green Lantern can actively command the ring's AI to run a diagnostic of a person, place or thing.
[/li][li]The AI automatically of translates nearly any alien language into the Green Lantern’s native tongue. The AI also knows if the power ring has been stolen and will prevent the thief from using it.
[/li][li]It is important to note that a power ring’s AI is limited. A power ring will not, for instance, perform any action that requires its wearer’s willpower and it rarely, if ever, acts on its own. A Power Ring that appears to act on its own is actually executing a preset command issued by its bearer.
Limitations:
[/li][li]Distractions may cause a Green Lantern to lose concentration and weaken or shatter their constructs.
[/li][li]Recharging the power ring is vitally important to ensure its continued use. Power Rings typically hold enough power for twenty-four hours of full use. It is advised to recharge a ring more often than at every absolute last second because a power ring cannot so much as provide life support to its wielder without power. A Green Lantern may check the power supply of their ring in order to determine if or when it needs recharged again.
The power rings are recharged by a Green Lantern placing their rings into a Power Battery and reciting their oath. Green Lanterns create a pocket dimension with their power rings in which they hide their respective Power Batteries. The locations of these pocket dimensions may only be uncovered by a Green Lantern, but the Lantern's power ring does not have to be charged to find it. A Green Lantern in need of a recharge after leaving their battery at home may utilize a nearby Green Lantern’s Power Battery.
[/li][li]Orange Power Rings can absorb the constructs of most other Power Rings excluding those of Blue and Violet Lanterns. They may even absorb energy constructs created by the Guardians and magic.
[/li][li]Yellow Impurity: For centuries, the Green Lantern's Power Rings were incapable of working on anything colored yellow. Fear exists on an emotional electromagnetic spectrum as the color yellow, whereas its opposite emotion, pure willpower, is green. Experienced Green Lanterns may overcome the Yellow Impurity by experiencing fear and overcoming it.
[/li][li]Rage Vulnerability: Red Energy, the energy of Red Lanterns who derive their power from anger, can corrupt Green Energy, draining a Green Lantern of their power. The Rage Vulnerability operates similarly to the Yellow Impurity. A Green Lantern may overcome this weakness by understanding, accepting, and controlling their anger.[/li][/ul][/style]
