Title: Teamwork Takes Time Characters Appearing: Hawkgirl, Kyle Rayner, mechanized baddie & civilians NPC'd. Time of Day: Late evening. Previous threads: None Synopsis: Kyle and Kendra team up to take down a robot as it rampages through the streets of New York. The two but heads after becoming trapped in a collapsed building.
The call had come in only a few minutes ago, but already Kyle had his doubts. After teleporting from the Watchtower to New York's warehouse district, the damage already done was pretty extensive. Teamed up with Hawkgirl, Kendra Saunders, Kyle wondered if they would be enough. The robot was fairly large, standing at least three stories tall. It seemed to have a great deal of speed, too, as Kyle started chasing after it. Aiming his ring at a large cluster of debris, he incinerated it before it had a chance to hit the bystanders below. Shaking his head, he looked to his partner. "New Yorkers are too jaded! Seriously, they're more interested in getting pictures and video of the robot, rather than running away like normal people."
As Kyle dove to take the fight directly to the robot, the machine suddenly spun and smacked him away. The force of the blow as strong enough to shatter the shield Kyle barely had a chance to put up before being hit. Flying back, Kyle hit an abandoned taxi with enough force to crush the roof down. Grunting, he slid off the cab and looked up at the robot. It was fast, and it was strong. This was going to be difficult, even with his ring. "Okay...ouch. Hawkgirl, this thing is fast, and really strong. Be careful, okay?"
Kyle looked up to his partner, and wondered how she was going to approach this. If she was anything like Hawkman, he wondered if she would just charge in with her mace and swing away. Sure, her Nth metal would probably work really well, but given how tough the robot looked, he wondered if it would be enough. "Ring, scan robot and analyze."
*Scan complete. Tungsten steel and carbon fiber exterior, nuclear powered core. Weapon systems located. Onboard Sensors located. Dismantle with extreme prejudice.*[/color]
Dammit! Nuclear powered?! If they damaged the machine too much, or the robot had a self destruct, they would be dealing with a nuclear bomb large enough to take out a large portion of New York City. This would require some finesse, something he wondered if they'd be able to pull off. He'd have to do more extensive scans to try to find weak spots to exploit, but it would take time. "Ring, continue scanning for weaknesses, and inform accordingly."

Kendra had only been working at the museum in St Roch for about a month now, but that had been enough time to impress the museum head curator. So much so that he had asked that the museum send Kendra to New York to oversee a shipment of ancient battle weapons that as to make the trip to St. Roch next week. Already she had been in the city that never sleeps for a day but it wasn't until she got a call about a large robot tearing the city up did she take out her wings and mace.
Hawkgirl flew between the tall buildings and over the head of the crowed of people that where filling the streets in order to watch the battle. Hawkgirl wouldn't be alone in this fight, she was to be aided by a Green Lantern named Kyle; not being part of the hero community for long and so she didn't know many people. But she had heard about the Green Lanterns and had seen some of their work, so it was going to be interesting to see how well she would be able to work with him.
Kendra had landed next to Kyle, small talk was not something either of them entered into; no please hellos or how are you, just right into work and why people where just willing to stand around and watch. "I blame the TV, they are too use to seeing stuff like this that it doesn't phase them anymore." Kendra answered without looking at Kyle but at the people below, whom he had just saved from falling debris. Hawkgirl didn't move as she watched Kyle jump off the roof and right into the action with the robot, which he got a nice smack down for his troubles from the robot; ruining a cab. "It look like it hurt." Hawkgirl mused to herself as she watched him pull himself from the whole in the car, now it was her turn. Diving off the roof with mace in hand Kendra headed toward the robot. Being a little more skill in flight she was able to move out of his way, even getting close enough to aim and hit to his back right shoulder; though not well enough to cause to much damage and she had to move quickly away before she would join Kyle on the ground.
At the moment Kendra had no idea what Kyle was up to, she didn't have the time to pay attention to him, for she was much to busy ducking hits from the robot. She was able to get her own hits in, not as many as she wanted since he was pretty quick.

As Kyle expected, Kendra moved in almost immediately after he'd been knocked away. She managed to get through the robots defenses, and her mace was doing its job. With her so close, Kyle wasn't going to risk attacking the robot directly, since a missed shot could hit Hawkgirl, so he chose to focus on the surrounding area instead. A lot of bystanders were getting wise, fleeing in the wake of spreading destruction. To their credit, even the police didn't try to get involved. Instead, they made sure to evacuate as many as they could find. Kyle used his ring primarily to keep falling debris and items from impeding or injuring any trying to get away.
Kyle's main concern were the surrounding buildings. If one of those collapsed, and there were still people inside, they were looking at hundreds of deaths. Even if they managed to stop the robot, if anyone died it would be a failure in Kyle's eyes. He had the most powerful weapon in the Universe on his finger, he should be able to end this without any problems. And if he weren't so morally inclined, he easily could. But, that would leave a large crater in New York, and more than a few thousand dead, so that was never an option.
"Hawkgirl, we need to contain this thing and drive it away from the populated buildings!" Kyle called out, moving to get in range. A com-link call during a fight could be dangerous and distracting, but so could this. As Kyle dove under a swinging arm, he sent a beam of light spiraling forward. The light wrapped around the machine and Kyle yanked hard, trying to get the thing to turn around. If they managed to get it going back the way it came, they chances of innocent lives injured or lost would go down. Those buildings behind them, at least, should've been evacuated by now.
What came next, Kyle hadn't expected. The robot turned to face him, and its eyes glowed bright. Immediately, Kyle knew what was coming. His powers reacted at the speed of thought, but somehow, impossibly, the robot was faster. The beams of light impacted Kyle in the chest and sent him spiraling away. The pain that radiated through his body was intense, and he lost focus on the construct, and his personal aura. Falling headfirst towards the ground, Kyle's eyes started to fade, and he forced himself to stay awake. He couldn't pass out, he couldn't...stop. He couldn't stop himself from falling, his mind to jumbled. What the hell had hit him?

HIt, dive, hit, dive, hit, dive, hit; this was the course that Hawkgirl was currently taking in order to try and take out this robot. From anyone below it would almost looked like a fly buzzing around someone's head and the random swiping in the air to capture the fly. There was a few times that Hawkgirl almost got hit, and one time she felt metal hand barely pass by her, cutting it very close to being sent to the ground. It seemed like there was really no end to this fight, she hit him and in return he tried to hit her; than it would start all over again. Hawkgirl didn't have time to look for Kyle, or to wonder what he was doing. Her only hope was he was trying to figure out what they needed to do in order to put an end to this threat.
"Hawkgirl, we need to contain this thing and drive it away from the populated buildings!"
As if Kyle knew that Hawkgirl thought about him for a brief moment, his voice came to her over the communicator. For a split second Hawkgirl's attention was drawn away from the robot and on what Kyle was saying, this was a mistake as in the second the robot hand swatted at her; sending Hawkgirl flying into a building. Hawkgirl crashed through a window, and landed on the floor of some office building; thankfully no one was there. It took Hawkgirl a moment to pull herself off the ground, for it hurt going through a thick glass of window, and she could already tell she had a few cuts. But she couldn't just lay there on the ground, for there was still people in danger outside that would need her help; not to mention Kyle had a plan that they needed to move the robot away from the city. "Lets throw this junk in the bay, see what kind of fight it has then." Hawkgirl couldn't hide the anger in her voice, for she didn't care to be thrown around like a doll.
Hawkgirl walked back to the window she had crashed throw, looking around to get an idea of what was going. She saw Kyle in the sky trying to attack the Robot, and clearly he had it's attention. Since the robot's back was now facing her, Hawkgirl decided now was the best time to sneak up behind it and smash her mace into his head. Hawkgirl jumped from the window and flew toward the robot, her mace held high ready to hit the beast until there was a dent in his head; that was until she saw Kyle fall.
It was if everything slowed down around her, she saw Kyle get hit and fly backwards. Slowly it seemed he headed toward the ground and looked as if he wasn't about to move. Stopping mid flight Hawkgirl quickly changed her direction and dove toward Kyle, her mace was still in her hand but she had to reach her team mate before he became road pizza.

The robot watched as the male hero spiraled away towards the ground. The female, her weapon was intriguing. She seemed concerned about the man, or at least his survival. While she dove after the man, the robot made a few quick calculations. It waited several seconds, then moved. It's leg lurched forward, arcing around to impact the now colliding bodies. The trajectory was perfect, knocking the two towards a still-populated building. Not bothering to watch its handiwork, the robot turned and headed back towards its goal.
Kyle woke up just in time for Hawkgirl to reach him, and for the robot to kick both of them into a building. Kyle wrapped them in a small bubble right before hitting the building, and immediately dreaded doing so. The building, a business complex that had already suffered some damage, groaned in protest as Kyle's bubble impacted a support structure, snapping it in half. As he impacted the ground, Kyle noticed a small group of civilians huddled in a corner. Dammit! Why hadn't they evacuated like everyone else?
Kyle's head was still spinning as the building seemed to sway around him. He couldn't think straight, and his eyes swam a little as he tried to focus on the people. The sharp scream of metal ripping apart tore at his eardrums as the floors above him seemed to compress. "No!
Kyle reacted without really thinking, beams appearing around them, and a hand grabbing all the innocents, pulling them closer. A solid force field surrounded everyone as the building collapsed, sending everyone slamming down several stories as Kyle's shoddily made support beams shattered under the pressure. Kyle turned his focus to the energy barrier protecting all of them, strengthening it as they impacted the ground and several more stories of building impacted the field from above. Groaning, Kyle saw a few cracks start to appear, but he quickly fixed them as fast as he could. After a few seconds, things seemed to quiet down, but now they were trapped in a bubble under a ton or more of rubble.
Kyle felt furious, wondering what the hell had happened. "Ring, what the hell was that?! You said nothing about energy blasts! Whatever that thing hit me with, it affected my brain! Report. Now!"
"No energy capabilities detected during early scans, Honor Lantern."
"Wait, what? Ring...are you saying this robot is learning and adapting? Is it A.I.?" Kyle asked, looking to Hawkgirl as the ring gave its report. If the robot was artificially intelligent, then they would have to adjust their tactics a lot. A straight fight would only make things worse, since it would analyze and adapt to any new attacks. But, the League had gone up against artificial intelligence before. They could take this one out, too. As soon as they got out of this.
"Probability of this machine possessing artificial intelligence in 45%. It is more likely that it is being controlled by an outside source."
For some reason that disturbed Kyle more than the thought of it being A.I. If someone was actually controlling this robot, that meant there was even more to this than Kyle originally thought. Kyle looked to the civilians, seeing none were grievously injured. However, he immediately thought of the innocents he hadn't been able to save. How many had died because of this? "Dammit! This isn't supposed to be happening. Hawkgirl...are you hurt?"
They weren't a team, Kyle had come to realize. Neither he, nor Kendra had really focused on working together. They had done this separately, and they were getting their asses kicked. This would have to change, but could it?

Hawkgirl urged herself onward, loosing track of the robot, as she speed toward Kyle. She had to get to him before he became road pizza, because he was her team mate right now and it would be hard to explain why he didn't make it; not to mention the paper work it would involve. So fast she urged herself forward, and reached out to grab him from the air as she got closer and closer. It was as she got closer that he started to come too, and something else happen. Just as Hawkgirl reached Kyle the robot's calculations worked out in his head and he aimed a well calculated kick at them.
The two heroes stopped heading toward the ground, and now where headed toward a building where the kick had aimed. Pain shot through Hawkgirl's body as she flew, and for a moment she had to wonder if some bones had snapped. However before she could really start righting herself in order to stop hitting the building; she heard the breaking of glass and crashing of something hitting the wall. However she didn't feel the building as she hit something, and opening her eyes she could see herself it what looked like a big green bubble. There wasn't however time to thank her lucky stars that Kyle had woken up and saved them, for at the moment another crash was heard. Turning quickly Hawkgirl could see the building starting to crumble and sway on the spot; it was coming down and it was coming down fast. Hawkgirl's darted quickly away from the building and to the people that where huddle together, they were in danger and they knew it. The building was coming down and they were in its path, they knew it and she did. Before Hawkgirl could do anything, for she was trapped in the bubble, Kyle had quickly set into motion.
Great green beams formed around them, in the attempt to hold the building up. All it truly did was slow down the crumpling building; for there was no way to truly stop it. Hawkgirl's mind raced with what she could do in order to save those people even thought they had been foolish enough not to get out of the way while the getting was good. Again it was as if Kyle read her mind, or maybe he was driven by the same feeling, but he was able to create a hand and snatch up the people; pulling them to safety before everything crashed around them.
The world was an eerie dark with a tent of green to it now, for the two heroes and civilians where now buried alive under the building that had crashed to the ground. They were safe, and alive, though in a big mess; this didn't worry Hawkgirl too much because there would be a way to get out of here it just might take a little time. So as Kyle worked on keeping their bubble strong and talking to his ring; in order to find out the best way to fight the crazy robot, Hawkgirl saw to the care of those that were trapped with them. For the most part they were all shaken up but not hurt, nothing that a cup of hot chocolate and a good night rest wouldn't cure. When the ring started to give it's report that the robot was learning as it fought, Hawkgirl turned and faced Kyle; this wasn't good news. If the robot could think for itself, or worse someone was running the dumb thing, than they needed to fight it and take it down quickly before they couldn't do anything. "I'm fine, are you hurt?" They would have to start acting more as a team now, instead of fighting on their own. This was something Hawkgirl wasn't use too, she was use to fighting on her own.
