He doesn’t do things because he feels some satisfaction in being the bad guy. Rather, Sinestro is an extremely driven and self-righteous alien, following his own vision of what will create peace and order in the universe. (Admittedly, more order than peace.) He honestly and fully believes that his actions, though seen as evil by most, will eventually be realized as what they truly are- the best methods of protecting the universe. But he is not a stupid man, either. He understands why so many oppose him, and that his actions are seen as murderous and dark in the eyes of most civilizations. However, he doesn’t let that get in his way. It is his idea of sacrifice that he should be punished for doing what will ultimately save not only his own home planet, but every planet in the universe. Let them hate him for his ‘crimes’. The end will justify the means. That is his mantra. Sinestro is a very charismatic character, with the ability to draw people towards him. His leadership qualities enable him to take charge of situations without hesitation, even when most would prefer he not get involved. Perhaps that is due, in part, to his very arrogant way of thinking- that he is the only one suited to lead regardless of the circumstance. At times, should someone else try and run the show, he is not above sticking his ring into the matter- letting the cold power of his yellow flame serve as a reminder that he is not to be messed with. He does not tolerate mutiny, and made sure those in his Sinestro Corp respected and listened to him at all times. Anyone who could follow his rule would be banished by his hand, often to their grave. His low tolerance for opposition helped keep a corps comprised of murderers and villains in check. It was often the only thing keeping them in check. Without him in the picture, his team soon dissolved into a group of thugs, playing more than working. This ‘minor’ flaw of egotism makes him a challenge to work with in a group. More than once he has been forced to work with other corp leaders to deal with a problem, and more than once he ended up getting in a fight with his co-workers to assert his dominancy. Should there ever come a time where working with Sinestro is needed, heroes need remember not to get in his way, lest they want to be walked all over. In fact, ‘with’ him would probably be a generous term for the endeavor. ‘Around’ him would be the most accurate description. Still, though he is indeed hard to work with, he will still show up to help if he feels a situation calls him to. Sometimes, an evil comes along that does not coincide with his ideals of ruling through fear. An evil he, like many heroes might, feels the need to stop. In such cases, then, some might even consider him a reluctant hero, though perhaps they are thinking to kindly of him. Really he seeks only to continue the pursuit of his own adventures. Those who might be saved or helped in the process are unfortunate results of an unavoidable situation. He is no more a hero than he is a villain. Sinestro is a cold, formal alien with a militaristic ruling style. He doesn’t like weak people and he doesn’t like cowardly people. Similarly, he is impressed by those who have the ability to instill great fear- even those who seek to oppose him, like Batman, for example. The red-skinned alien has a sharp tongue and a habit of mocking people, though only because he finds them completely annoying and wants to make them look bad. Nothing wrong with that, right? His sense of humor can surprise those who only see him as an evil-doer, as he spends so much time with a straight back and his hands crossed over his chest that it might seem impossible that he even knows the meaning of the word ‘joke’. All the same, he has been known to poke fun and enjoy himself, at least to a small degree. That being said, Sinestro could never be considered a jovial or light-hearted sort. Even before his fall from grace, Sinestro had never been someone to take to parties. Normally, when not out following his ideals, he spends his time in solitude, musing to himself or engaging in some minor activities. Peace is hard to find with such a busy schedule, and he’ll not have it ruined by others who wish to run off on some stupid trip or holiday. No, Sinestro is not a party animal. Even with the other members of his team he is distant and aloof. It seems unlikely that he’s ever had any true friends. In his days as a Green Lantern, perhaps he got along more with other members, but never to a fully trusting degree. Even Hal, his former student, had never gotten as close to Sinestro as he might have wanted to. About the only one he felt any kind of kinship towards was the late Abin Sur. One, true friend whom he shared everything with. A friend who, due to the failure of the Guardians and a prophecy Sinestro had never believed in, died before his time. After that, Sinestro saw no need to get close to anyone else. He’d already lost two extremely important people in his life, and would not suffer the same heart ache again. The second person gone from his life? That would be Arin, Abin’s sister and Sinestro’s deceased wife. She was the only woman in the whole of the universe that Sinestro had ever loved. To her, alone, he had given his heart. Even after they had started to break apart, he loved her still, longing for her to realize his dreams and join him once more. Such a reunion never happened, however, and Sinestro’s heart is frozen in time because of it. Forever will he continue longing for his lost love, never to see her pretty face smiling at him again. Thanks to these often painful feelings, he prefers to put his efforts into destroying love whenever possible, convinced that is all it is capable of doing anyway. Being destroyed. To him, love is a weakness. The only connection his heart holds now is to his daughter, Soranik, whom he has vowed to protect despite her apparent loathing of him. She is the one thing he is protective of, and the only one capable of bringing out some of his softer emotions. Everyone else gets the same hard-assed nut job they’ve come to fear. Sinestro is, on the whole, a complex personality. He has within him the ability to show compassion, love, and hope, yet he refuses these parts of himself. In order to obtain his glorious vision, he must remain a strong, fearless leader with no weaknesses in his resolve. In blinks these greater moments can happen, and just as easily they can be over-shadowed by him doing something particularly horrifying. It is hard to know just how Sinestro will react in a situation. His is not a mind easily understood, especially with his sudden shift in job description. Being an intelligent, yet bat-s&%t crazy, Korugaran, it always seems as though his mind is churning out the most diabolical of strategies. Within seconds of observing a situation, he seems to have a plan. Another important leadership quality, perhaps- an impressive ability to plan ahead, even when facing a situation without any prior knowledge. [/style][STYLE=color: #191919; font-size: 10px; margin-top: 10px; margin-left: 10px;]DOCUMENTED HISTORY[/style][STYLE= margin: 0px 10px 0px 10px; border: 2px solid #191919; padding: 2px; font-family: verdana; height: 125px; overflow: auto; font-size: 11px; color: #000000; text-align: justify; background-color: #ffffff; opacity: 0.8] BEFORE THE CORPS: Sinestro was born in Korugar City, on the planet Korugar. The bustling town with a large population paid almost no attention to the Sinestro family, the small Korugarans just three of many within the tall walls of the technologically advanced society. His mother was humble and loved him dearly, always sure to make him happy with the newest toys and clothing. She never worked, living her life at home, happily tending to her child. Meanwhile, her husband lived as a construction worker. In a booming city where projects were always underway, and Korugarans to build them always needed, he did not suffer for work. So he and his family had quite a well-sustained living. But there was always something of a desire within the man, bringing him to want more. More for his family, more of their life. More for himself. Sinestro, however, wasn’t aware of any of this, more or less sticking to chewing on his toes and making horrible messes for his mother to clean up. Even evil super villains had to start somewhere, and his was as normal a life as could be had on Korugar. Until he was around five years old, anyway. That was about the time his father’s desire to have more became more of a passion- the driving force behind his actions and thoughts. He suddenly quite his job in construction, much to the chagrin of his wife, and spent most of his time, particularly at night, out of the house. Though he never explained the job he had gotten to replace his former one, the money continued to come in. In fact, they seemed to grow in prosperity after the sudden shift in profession, the money more prominent in their lives than ever. Sinestro, growing every day, never wanted for anything. The years continued to drift by, and the family continued to move up in society. However, even the young Thaal started to think there wasn’t something right with the way they were doing things. He had many friends as a child, and none of them seemed to move house as much as he had to. None of them had to watch their daddy come home late at night, moody and sometimes unable to even recognize his wife and child. He began to notice the way the adults looked at his parents- the way they seemed to move to the other side of the street when they saw them walking. Saw his father. Most of all, he began to notices stark changes in his mother. She seemed to have stopped smiling for quite some time, and she was always angry with her husband. Distant from him, too, like she didn’t even know who he was. There was always a sort of sorrow in her expression, and no matter what the young korugaran tried, it never seemed enough to brighten her spirits. She would tell him not to worry, and that she was just tired. It seemed like she was tired all the time. He needed to find out more about it. And he would have started to ask questions about all of it directly to his old man, but something happened to distract him from his worries- his mother became pregnant. His mother had always told him how much she loved being pregnant with him. How feeling him move had always filled her with a sense of joy. Seeing his mother go through her pregnancy, the boy had to wonder if she had lied to him, or if things were different the second time around. It just seemed like she didn’t want to be having a baby- he heard her crying in the night all the time. Again, he asked about it, but the same answers blocked him from the truth. She was fine. She was just tired. Having a baby was hard work. Too much work, it seemed. When his sister was born, his mother died. He didn’t really understand what had happened. He couldn’t comprehend that a life could be lost when another was gained. The emotions were too much to handle for one so young. Happy though he was that his sister had lived, there was a hole in his heart too large for her to fill. She was just a baby, and not someone he really knew that well. Where was his mother? Why had she died? What did the doctors mean when they said her body just gave out? Were they so easily broken? Thaal didn’t want to think about it, but the thoughts remained with him long after his mother’s funeral. After that day, it became clear that an eleven-year-old boy would have to be the parent to his newly born daughter. His father continued to spend long hours from the house, doing whatever he did to earn them money. The man didn’t seem stalled, or remotely concerned, with the passing of his wife. Nor was he particularly interested in his two children. But Thaal had always been told that his father sought what was best for the family. That he worked hard so they could have a good life. All he needed to do was accept that and ensure that they had the good life his father wanted for them. So, even though his father had hired a care taker for him and his sister, Thaal did his best to look out for the baby. He did everything he remembered his mother explaining she had done for him. Changing diapers, giving baths, feeding, burping, playing with… he did every little thing he could think of for his sister. He and little Lilith, a name he knew his mother had always loved, were the best of friends. Naturally, young Thaal wasn’t spending all his time at home. Thrown into the mix were his studies. Thankfully, primary school was not difficult for him. He excelled in all of his subjects, particularly history and the sciences. His teachers were always happy to say he was a brilliant boy- much more advanced than those in his class. That was probably why he was skipped a level in his learning, put in with older students to challenge him further. After his mother died, he made sure his studies didn’t suffer for it. Actually, burying himself in his books and looking after his sister seemed the best way to ignore all the things glaringly wrong with his life. Even a child could not hide from obvious problems, no matter how often he told himself it was all for the best. However, a child could distract himself, and rather easily, by pouring all his energies into random tasks. His love for history blossomed in the two years following his mother’s death. Though still young, he knew he wanted to become an archeologist. He wanted to get away from all the craziness in the city and just find somewhere peaceful. Chaos was everywhere, he was learning, and he hated it. He loathed it. His teenage years brought him more clarity into the true nature of his father’s business ventures. He began to investigate more, and assume less. The naïve nature of his youth faded with puberty. One night, after making sure his sister was fast asleep, he ventured into his father’s room, exploring until he managed to find some unsteady floor beams hidden under a rug. Beneath the floor was a stairwell, leading to a dank, stone-lined room brimming with strange chemistry sets and machines he had never seen before in his life. Though he didn’t understand the technology, he knew it’s purpose without having to ponder- it was a drug lab. His father created and pawned tech and drugs to infect people with addictions. He corrupted the city. Thaal couldn’t believe it. In the blink of an eye, everything his mother had always told him became a lie. It made him hate his father, and resent his mother. Had she known the truth? Her moods, her sorrow, was it all due to guilt? There was a definite shift in the boy’s attitude at that point. He began to look at everything different. Knowing his father was causing such chaos right beneath his feet made him one angry little korugaran. He wanted it to stop. There had to be something he could do. His thought turned to law enforcement, something some of the others students in his classes talked about a lot. However, he was not a strong boy, and he knew he would not be able to last such a field of study. But if he didn’t have the power to change what was going on around him, what could he do? Beyond escaping it altogether, he simply didn’t know. Once again he took to his studies, devoting himself to the history he loved so very much. If he could not change his world, he would restore ones past. Find his own path in life, and show his father that he didn’t need to be related to his old man’s life in the slightest. Indeed, a thought that carried him through school. When he was old enough, and not a second later, he left home to pursue higher studies in archeology. While it hurt to have to say goodbye to his sister, he knew she was not going to have to suffer a miserable life. Their care taker was a kind woman, and someone he trusted with his life. With her life, in turn. When he left, he vowed he would find a way make them honest money, so they could move away from their disingenuous father and the shady activities he engaged in. He spent many years pursuing his studies, and found it was not difficult for him to become an archeologist like he had always wanted. The difficult part, he found, was after the schooling had come to an end. The difficult part was finding a job. His was a life of no importance- he was not a remarkable man by any means. Though grown and full of convictions, he had no means to act on everything he hoped to accomplish. All he could do was work and earn money, in the hopes of holding true to his promise. A promise that seemed to be moving further and further away from him. There was trouble within Korugar. Dissention. Civil war was brewing. Still, he wasn’t unhappy. Being around history, living in a world he controlled completely, was nothing to be ashamed about. Even if he had no real standing within his community, he was happy. As war broke out around his beloved planet, he could stay in his own little world. The rest of Korugar couldn’t touch him. Naturally, he never imagined something beyond Korugar would find its way into his life and change him forever. JOINING THE CORPS: Thaal had been on site the day it happened. He found he had a keen love of restoring old ruins. When he was alone with his work, he controlled every outcome. Every detail. He created an order that could not be denied or altered unless he wanted it to. That, alone, was enough to keep him motivated in his work, even when it seemed the world around him was crumbling. The longer he worked in his field, the more he felt he craved order. History was amazing, and he loved discovering things about the past, but that wasn’t the real draw of his job, though it may have been at the beginning. Things changed. They always changed. Thaal was busy working on his restorations, alone in the ruins, when a clatter arose outside them. Curious, the Korugaran archeologist ventured outside, just in time to get knocked off his feet when a massive boom shook the whole area. Something had crashed, and very close by. Though it hadn’t hit the ruins themselves, Thaal was concerned someone may have been injured in the crash. His life didn’t solely revolve around the restoration of old rocks, after all. So he made his way quickly to the crash site, pushing back any fear as he climbed down into the wreckage to check for survivors. As he inched closer over burning metal and broken space ship, a bright green glow exploded from the ship, a small bubble of light shooting from the craft. Blinking, Thaal watched as the light ball made a rather large turn in the air, shooting back down again as though it had forgotten its keys or something. Veering towards him, the light sprang his way, bouncing almost eagerly through the air. Of course, Thaal wasn’t sure if this light was safe, or some very strange and overly elaborate way of melting his insides, so he braced himself for whatever impact he would soon face. Running away didn’t seem like it would do much for him, anyway, since the light was clearly much quicker than his untrained legs could ever hope to be. However, he soon discovered that the light was not on some mission to kill him. Instead, it flew around him, waiting for him to unclench his tense fists before moving in. Without any help from him, a ring slipped onto his left hand, glowing brightly in the same green as before. He raised his hand, looking at the small, wondrous trinket in nothing short of awe. And then he remembered there still might be a victim in the ship wreckage, so he continued his little adventure. He found inside the ship a dying alien named Prohl Gosgotha, who weakly explained to him that the ring was that of the Green Lanterns Corps, a group from all over the universe dedicated to bringing peace and, to the ear-perking satisfaction of Thaal, order. Prohl also had just enough left in him to explain that he had been chased by a rather ominous threat known as a weaponer, and that the monster was still after him, even as he lie there dying. Thaal, a little shocked, suddenly became very aware that he was in a dangerous place, where some kind of murderer was going to show up to finish the job he had clearly started. However, he did not run. Not when the alien, clinging to life, laid a tentacle of a hand over his arm and whispered: “No fear.” He set his jaw at that, placing the alien’s hand over his own chest so he could rest. Straightening himself, he looked at the ring, which had just heard was actually an extremely powerful weapon. But… there was no instruction manual. No classes on how to make it work. Only an alien too weak to instruct him and a threat that was on the way. Or, rather, had just arrived. Another massive thud from outside proved to him the weaponer, as he had been called, had arrived on the planet and was looking for his target. Frowning, Thaal moved out of the rubble, climbing the crater, to meet him. Why? He couldn’t say- he felt he couldn’t allow this threat to possibly run rampant on his home world. Korugar was very important to him, even in times of war, and he wouldn’t let some invading punk mess anything up, especially when he wasn’t even there for anyone from their world. At least, that’s what he had thought. He had assumed the creature was chasing Prohl. However, as he quickly discovered with all his deductive prowess, the weaponer was actually after the ring itself. Whoever was wearing it was simply someone who needed to have their finger removed. The weaponer launched his attack on Thaal, who still didn’t know how to do a damn thing with the ring he had on his finger. Raising a massive mace of sort, the weaponer brought his weapon down at the new lantern, ready to crush in his little, surprised face. This didn’t appeal to Thaal or his instincts, the man raising his arms in a feeble attempt to block the attack. The ring on his finger glowed to life, and he soon found himself behind a protective barrier of green. The weaponer bounced off it like a drop of rain against an umbrella, seemingly shocked that Thaal had managed to make even a crude construct on no training. Thaal, meanwhile, took a rather ill-timed moment to look himself over. His whole outfit had changed. Gone were the dirty, sun-damaged threads he had been wearing for his restoration, replaced with a sleek, body-tight uniform of some material he had never seen before. It was warm, and comforting, fitted perfectly to him so no portion seemed anything other than a part of him. The black glinted in the dying sun of the day, while the green radiated a kind of power that could not be considered anything other than impressive. The suit… it almost seemed alive. On the center of his chest, he noted a large symbol that looked suspiciously like, well, a lantern. Kind of a good choice of emblem, if he was really a member of the Green Lantern Corps as the dying alien in the wreckage behind him had said. However, it was a poor time to analyze the outfit he found himself in, the weaponer in no mood to wait for him to finish checking himself out. He pulled from his back a large gun of some alien design, a massive blast pulsing from the weapon and directly at the newbie lantern. Thaal reacted by pulling back, surprised when he didn’t just leap, but flew out of the way. Barriers and flight- what else could the ring do? Suddenly, he found himself more interested in discovering the secrets of the ring than protecting himself from the weaponer. He wasn’t scared. He was inquisitive. The battle between himself and the weaponer was long and dangerous, Thaal using the opportunity to learn various things the ring was capable of. However, he was still new to the whole business of crime-fighting, and his opponent had years of green lantern-hating experience on his side. So Thaal knew he would have to be crafty to win, luring the weaponer into the ruins he had taken so much pain-staking time to restore in other to trap him within a much more confined, much more manageable space. His large weapons were of no use to him within the cramped walls of an old temple. By the time the battle ended, the ruins Thaal had spent months trying to return to their former glory were, once again, destroyed, though this time they seemed beyond any repair. A shame to watch the history of his beloved planet crumble, but he had accomplished what he had intended from the sacrifice- the defeat of the weaponer. With the threat finally subsided, Thaal returned to Prohl, only to find the alien had died at some point during the fight. That was fine, Thaal knew, as he would have been very displeased to have to give up his new ring, if the alien had wanted it back. Of course, he had no clue what he was supposed to do with the ring now that it was on his finger- he didn’t know the first thing about the Green Lantern Corps. Good thing, then, that the ring was way ahead of him, charting a course to their home base and launching Thaal into the air before he even had a chance to go tell his family about his new discovery. Though he tried his best to protest, he could not stop the trip through the universe, and eventually took to watching the various planets and stars that passed him by. It might have been a terrifying sight to someone, flying through space with no clue of where he was going or how to get back, but Thaal was calm. It was something he was good at- keeping calm when things got insane. Certainly, they were as insane as they could possibly be at that point. He eventually touched down on a very strange, very advanced planet, which appeared to be brimming with other aliens in black and green- it was full of lanterns, as they called themselves. He wasn’t on the planet two minutes when he met the man who would become his greatest friend in the universe. Abin Sur. Abin had been directed to train him with his ring, and show him the ropes while providing him information about Oa and the Corps. Train they did, for many weeks. In that time, Abin came to realize Thaal was more than just another recruit- he had skill and an ability to catch on extremely quickly. He was a talent, and an asset to the corps. Thaal, meanwhile, loved learning about the ring, though he soon found himself a little suspicious of their blue leaders. The guardians… they seemed to hide much from the rest of the corps. More than they should, perhaps. Still, on the whole, Thaal was pleased with his new job. Certainly, it was better than cleaning up old ruins, and had just as much to discover. The best of both worlds, considering the ring was a tiny history book to all the planets in his sector. How he enjoyed sitting somewhere quiet, learning about the planets he would have to protect. Eventually, though, time for research became short, his trial period as a rookie over and his real job as lantern of sector 1417 initiating. He had to travel to many planets, solving the various problems within them. From murderers and thieves, to war and plans to destroy worlds, there was nothing he wasn’t there to help solve. Promoting order became something of Thaal’s, or rather Sinestro’s, as that was the name he had become known by throughout the corps, obsession- he loved that he finally had power to resolve issues of any level. So, naturally, he returned to his home world to bring order to his planet, to bring an end to the civil war that he been raging on his planet for years. He did what he could to calm the embittered sides, though it was a slow process in getting them to listen to him. Even after recruiting the help of some officers, namely a bright woman named Arsona, he found his ring had its limits. Peace would not come easily to Korugar. Protecting the sector and trying to fix Korugar, though large occupiers of his time, were not the only things the Lantern did with his day. He still enjoyed spending time with his mentor, Abin, though the territorial edict forbade them from really helping one another with missions. Still, that didn’t mean he couldn’t visit the home planet of his dear friend from time to time. On one such visit, he was introduced to Abin’s sister, Arin. The moment he laid his eyes on her, he was struck through the heart by cupid’s arrow. She was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Their love was clear, and soon enough they went from dating to getting married. Arin moved to Korugar, to live with Thaal there. They were happy, and for a time even the civil war that kept springing back to life was not enough to put a hamper on their joy. It wasn’t long before Arin gave birth to their first, and only child, Soranik. Thaal could not have been a happier father, treating that girl like she owned his entire world. Even his ring was hers to play with, if it made her happy. The power and respect he got from being a member of the corps meant nothing to him when compared to the happiness of simple life. If only that could have remained all he needed in life, then perhaps he would not have fallen to a similar path as his father, corrupted not by money, but the need for order and control. Soon enough, he wanted his planet to be a safe place for his daughter and wife, and began to take more potent actions in bringing order to his planet. Actions that the corps itself might not have considered all that legal. He began imposing his own will on his planet, becoming less of a lantern and more of a dictator. Arin tried to get him to stop, but Sinestro refused, saying he was tired of the civil war and his will would end it. Order could be maintained through them fearing his will, he just knew it. Arin, however, disliked this turn of heart in her husband, telling him that she feared what they might do as backlash for his actions. Sinestro, though unwilling to bend in his ideals of order, did see that she had a point, and he allowed her to take their daughter and hide her away with another family. She, however, took it a step further by not telling him where she had taken Soranik, explaining to him that, as much as she loved him, she just felt his knowing would endanger their daughter. Reluctantly, aware he would lose his precious Soranik forever, Sinestro agreed to her terms. With their daughter safe, Arin stayed by Sinestro’s side, wanting to try and convince him to change his ways before it was too late. She knew Abin would help her, if he knew. She had even made plans to tell him about her husband’s antics, in hopes of her brother talking sense into Sinestro. But she soon found out, as they all found out, that Abin had been killed. Sinestro knew the guardians were aware of what had killed Abin, but they weren’t willing to share all the information they could on the matter. They seemed afraid of the new threat, and that fear was the reason Abin had died. The being named Atrocitus and the prophecies he had tainted Abin with- they seemed to think it was too strong for even the corps to defeat. But the greatest of the green lanterns did not fear this Blackest Night his friend had always been going about before his death. Sinestro felt it- Sinestro felt, for the first time, true loathing of the guardians. He blamed them for what had happened to his friend and mentor. Blamed them, as he blamed himself. In their last weeks together, Sinestro and Abin had grown distant from one another, Sinestro disturbed by Abin’s seemingly unhealthy fascination with prophecies and what was to come. He had thought his friend was going mad and needed some time from work. If only he had believed in him a bit more- stood by him, at the very least. Perhaps he would not have died. From that moment, Sinestro was changed. He became even more moody and distant. Once again, he took to hiding in his work, continuing his bid to control Korugar. There was a large resistance soon after Abin’s death, and in that push, a young boy strapped a bomb to his chest and brought it to Sinestro, igniting it to try and stop the Green Lantern at the will of his parents. The massive blast, while ineffective against a lantern’s barrier, destroyed a large portion of the city, causing the ground to cave into sewers. The sewers Sinestro had just sent his wife down to escape the chaos. The sewers he had told her he would be safe on her trip to their ship, where she would be able to leave Korugar and never return. Those safe sewers proved her doom, Arin dying in the arms of her guilt-stricken husband. None of his emotional turmoil, nor his antics on his homeworld, were shown away from Korugar. Beyond him being a total asshole to everyone around him, no one suspected anything going on in his personal life. They just assumed Abin’s good friend was upset about his passing. And he was. Beyond all doubt, he was. He was upset about many things. And he was angry. So angry, he decided to take it out on the replacement to sector 2814- a pathetic human from earth named Hal Jordan. Sinestro knew such an underdeveloped, brutish world like earth could hold no true warriors meant for the ring, and was sure, for the first time in corps history, that there had been some kind of mistake. His resentment of Jordan stemmed from things far beyond Hal’s control, but that didn’t seem to make much difference to Sinestro. He didn’t need to be justified in his loathing- he just needed someone to blame some of his problems on. It annoyed him that he had been chosen by some Guardian who felt the need to call himself Ganthet to bring the boy to Oa- to train him. But he obeyed, and the resulting confrontation laid the groundwork for their inevitable friendship. On the planet, Sinestro encountered the being who had slaughtered his friend, and with the help of Hal they were able to subdue and arrest him. From that moment on, Sinestro took Hal under his wing, teaching him what he knew about the ring, while also advising him not to fully put his faith in the guardians. It was becoming increasingly clear they had their own agenda, and the corps was only a tool to accomplish whatever it was they were after. Things took an unexpected turn some time later, when Hal visited Korugar and discovered what Sinestro had been doing to his own home world- forcing control through his will power and the might of his ring. Though Sinestro tried to explain his reasoning, Hal sought to bring him to justice, and the guardians seemed to side with the human on how wrong the greatest among their corps had been. They banished him from the corps, an insult in itself. Sinestro vowed his revenge. He vowed to destroy Hal and the Guardians of the universe. After his banishment, Sinestro spent an inordinate amount of time trying to get his revenge on the corps, having allowed himself to get a little lost in his hatred of them after what they had done to him. Many times he made alliances with unsavory characters, like the weaponers of Qward and the Mad God of Sector 3600, in ill-conceived attempts to shut down the corps he formerly loved. It was only after he was captured for the umpteenth time and imprisoned within the central power battery of Oa that he finally managed to make some headway- he managed to come in contact with the essence of fear itself, Parallax, and have him infect Hal’s mind, sending the former glory of the Green Lanterns on a mind-controlled rampage. When that, too, ultimately failed to destroy the Green Lanterns, Sinestro decided to re-focus his energies. The lust to destroy the lanterns had subsided, and while he knew he needed to get rid of the guardians, he began to understand that he had been foolish to think they all needed to die be cause of their leaders. The corps itself was still good-still needed to promote order. It just... needed to change. It needed a push in the right direction, and Sinestro knew he was just the one to alter them into what they were always meant to be. What he had been trying to be from the very beginning. In the abyss of the anti-matter universe, Sinestro made a pact with the anti-monitor and decided to found the Sinestro Corps- a corps much like the Green Lanterns, but fueled by fear and their yellow power rings. Sinestro sought out those capable of instilling great fear, bringing together the greatest monsters and demons throughout the universe to form a fearsome, terrible team. Under his leadership, devoted to his cause, they launched their attack against the Green Lanterns, and once again the Lanterns of earth had to rise up to protect the whole of the corps. Sinestro, however, saw more in their battle than merely defeating them- he sought to change them. That change came when the Guardians of the universe granted the Green Lanterns the use of excessive force to kill the Sinestro Corps members in battle, something that had never before been allowed. Something Sinestro knew they needed to keep up with the various threats throughout the universe. Though the battle ultimately failed, and he was once again arrested, he considered what he had accomplished far more of a win, and was certain things were going exactly as he wanted them to. With the new rules in place, Sinestro was scheduled to be executed on his own planet, Korugar, for his many crimes throughout the universe. He had killed billions in his various plots and schemes, making him one of the most dangerous beings in all the universe. This meant little to Sinestro, who was looking forward to going home more than anything else. The idea of dying did not scare him, as he remained firm that he feared nothing. During transport, still free members of his corps sought to rescue him from the sciencell he was being carried in, though their attempt was interrupted as a new corps of red-wearing rage monsters burst in and kidnapped him first. He soon discovered the Red Lanterns were ruled by Atrocitus, who was still pissed at him for leaving him to rot on his dead homeworld years before. He is taken to Ysmault, base camp for the red lanterns within the lost sector, and nailed to a massive statue of their red emblem. Crucified and without his power ring, Sinestro was left to slowly bleed to death, to fuel the power rings of the red lanterns. Atrocitus makes matters worse by revealing he knows about Sinestro’s only daughter, Soranik, and will kill her just because he also knows Sinestro cares about her still. Hal Jordan arrived just in time to find Sinestro weakened and nailed to the emblem, unable to make a decision as to whether or not he should kill his former mentor. His greatest enemy. In the end, he is captured too, until other lanterns arrive to mix things up. Sinestro, once freed and given his ring back, kills one of the red lanterns: former green lantern Laira. This almost gets him killed, in turn, as it makes Hal rage-out and forces him into the red lantern corps. If not for the interference of the Blue Lanterns, he would not have survived. Discovering the blue light drains the power of yellow, the Sinestro Corps make their retreat back to their central power battery, where Sinestro recharges quickly before heading off to warn his daughter of the events to comes. Getting to Korugar, and meeting his daughter, went about as well as to be expected. She saw him as an enemy, and refused to believe him until he explained her birth and how much he had been keeping an eye on her. He even told her about a time, after she had graduated, where she had asked someone to take a picture of her and her family, unaware that he was the one she had asked. Though he was one misguided dude, he wanted her safe, and told her not to let the red lanterns get ahold of her before leaving her to defend Korugar once more. He visits Arin’s grave, feeling nostalgic, before deciding to mount an attack on the Star Sapphires, who took many members of his corps to convert into their ranks. BLACKEST NIGHT: Sinestro arrives on Zamaron to reclaim his tea members, and quickly engages in combat with Carol Ferris. He is eventually trapped within a crystal of violet light, forcing him to remember the love in his heart- his love for Arin Sur. This, of course, enrages him more than it calms him down, causing him to burst free from the confines before he could be converted into the first male Star Sapphire. He then attacks Carol once more, gaining the upper hand with his new desire to make her pay for the emotions she made him relive. His attack is interrupted, however, when the dead arrive on Zamaron- Black Lanterns. Forced to work with the enemy he had just been trying to murder, Sinestro and Carol attempt to fend off the Black Lanterns, Sinestro reflecting on his poor friend Abin Sur. During this seemingly hopeless battle, they are joined by a strange man in indigo and Hal Jordan, whose green ring seems the only thing capable of putting the Black Lanterns down for good. Sinestro, of course, meets Hal by attempting to kill him, and they fight. Indigo 1, a female in indigo, interrupts the fight, much to the irritation of Sinestro. But before he could make her pay for it, they are met with more Black Lanterns, and more to deal with. Indigo 1 teleports the lot of them away from Zamaron, taking them to Sinestro’s homeworld of Korugar. Sinestro demands answers, but is instead teleported to meet an enemy- Mongul, who had been making a bid to take over his corps in his absence. A bit surprised, Sinestro is thrust directly into battle, and quickly starts getting his ass pounded by the much larger, much more ready Mongul. The other lanterns, Indigo, Hal and Carol, watch, a little skeptic that their would-be ally would actually win. They attempt to help, only to have Sinestro blast them away for the efforts. It is his fight, after all, he wants them to butt the hell out of it. Again he takes on Mongul, and again he is beaten into a black and blue mess by the mighty warrior who had matched fists with the likes of Superman. Hal and the others seek to help him once more, but again they are forced away. Mongul seizes Sinestro by the head, ready to end him and claim the corps as his own. Sinestro then over-rides Mongul’s power rings, causing them to turn against their owner and shoot him full of beams of light. Sinestro then imprisons Mongul in his power battery, to keep him from dying and thus becoming a target for the Black Lantern rings that seemed to like the dead. Before they can celebrate, though, more lanterns land- Abin and Arin sur. Sinestro is struck for a moment, almost unable to defend himself, at the sight of his lost wife. She speaks his name, asking him if everything he had was worth the loss of her life. He, in a rare moment of uncertainty, can’t respond to her. Still, with the help of the other lanterns, Abin and Arin are eventually returned to the world beyond, Sinestro taking a sad moment to consider his past before rekindling his mission to help stop the black lanterns. It has become clear to him that they pose a threat to his corps, as well as all the others, and thus it would not be in his best interest to leave the matter in the hands of incompetent humans. They head to earth and, after bringing together other members of the light spectrum, combine their lights, in hopes it will destroy the Black Lantern’s power source, but it fails. So they send out duplicates of their rings, in hopes the power increase with new members will be enough to stop the threat of death all around them. The battle against the Black Lanterns grew more epic when the dead Spectre came calling. The battle was long and horrible, the lanterns pretty much getting their butts handed to them for all their great efforts. In a last ditch effort to gain some ground, Hal asks Sinestro to free parallax, which he does with the thought that he would be the one to control that great power of fear. But he is snubbed by Hal, who takes the power for himself. Parallax, in Jordan, fights Spectre, the power of will and fear against death itself. Eventually, Spectre is restored and manages to pull Hal from Paralax. Before Sinestro can combine with the entity of fear, it is taken away by some unknown force. During the fight, Nekron summons the entity, the spirit of life. Sinestro merges with the spirit, becoming the first white lantern. With his epic power, he pretty much pwns every black lantern within range. However, Nekron rises up behind him, slicing him fatally right down the middle. The power of life, however, makes death a thing of the past, Sinestro mending from the clearly deadly wound within minutes. He again attacks, but Nekron manages to pull him from the spirit of the white entity. He spends the rest of the fight off to the side, recovering from the awesome power that he had managed to get a hold of. It was too much for him, for his ego, but the same would have been said for any who attempted it without knowing what they were getting into. With the war over, the corps agree on a truce and part ways, though Sinestro is not done investigating earth, or the power of the white light. AFTER THE WAR OF LIGHT: Sinestro soon discovered a power battery on earth, white and shiny and completely immovable. So he goes to find Hal, whom the battery asks for, and the two, with tagalong Carol, return to the power battery to see what was going on with the thing. It wasn’t until all three touched the battery that it sprang to life and, by some measure, explained to them that they needed to find the entities and keep them from someone who was looking to collect them all and use them for evil. So, again gathering the other corps leaders, they set out to do just that, Sinestro rather reluctantly teamed up with Atrocitus. They hunt the butcher, though Sinestro leaves before they make too much headway, important business brought to his attention. He must go free his daughter from the clutches of a weaponer, the one who first forged his yellow ring way back when he was desperate for revenge against the Green Lantern corps. The one who laid the ground work for him to forge his own rings and construct his own army. Naturally, he arrived, beat the ever loving hell out of the Qwardian, and then gave him a yellow power ring to show no hard feelings. Before leaving again, he informed Soranik that, had she come to any harm, he would have ripped the planet apart. Though he is not very expressive about his feelings, it is clear he was concerned about her safety, and was glad she had not been hurt before his getting there to assist her. Naturally, he didn’t tell her that he wouldn’t have come at all if he hadn’t been told that the weaponer and been specifically asking for him at the cost of her life- she didn’t need to know all the details. He returned to the others to find they had completely flubbed the mission without him and lost all the entities. Annoyed, he goes with them to the dead planet of Ryut, in the lost sector, to try and track down the lost entities. They find instead the Book of Black, which holds within its pages countless secrets. Before he can have himself an anthrologist-fueled flick through, however, they are attacked by the traitor Lyssa Drak, who attempts to trap them all within the book forever. Sinestro combines powers with Hal, using the last of his strength before the book consumes him, too, to free Jordan and give him the chance to save them. He is then pulled into the book of black, where his mind is clouded and he is sucked back into his past. Sinestro finds himself under attack by a manhunter, who uses its mechanics to absorb his ring’s attacks. He shoots off, contacting help from Abin, when he starts to regain control of himself. With his will so strong, he realizes what he is experiencing is nothing but a trick, and breaks free from the hold of book’s might, very nearly crying in the process. Poor Sinestro, overcome with the emotion and knowledge of knowing he was no longer in the Green Lantern corps. After a rage-filled rampage through the pages of the book, Sinestro finds himself in a cell on a strange planet, where he is attacked by a much less peaceful Indigo 1. Though she mentioned Abin Sur, and gains his interest in doing so, he knew he had more important things to do than sit around and learn some history. He uses his might to break free from her, and the page, continuing on his path once more. Finally, he encountered a guardian outside the book, while he remained trapped on the page. The guardian informed him that he was no longer needed, and burned the page he was on, sending him into darkness once more. There was nothing. Absolutely nothing around him. It wasn’t even cold. Sinestro could only assume he was dead- he knew nothing else that could be so black… so empty. It seemed to last an eternity. Then, without warning, he found himself restored. Brought back to the real world with the rest of the lantern leaders. He did not mention the experience he had, just pleased to be back in the light. However, when attempting to get his ring back, it is redirected, placed on the hand of the guardian who had tried to kill him. On the hand of Krona. Powerless, Sinestro can only watch as Hal Jordan tried desperately to defeat Krona on his own. The guardian, in possession of all the entities, proved too much for one human lantern, and quickly over powered him. However, seeing his former enemy giving it his all moved Sinestro, prompting him to pick up a piece of scrape metal and leap in to try and help. Of course, that was as effective as a fly hitting a wind shield, and he is soon over powered as well. It might have been the end for him, again, had a ring not found its way to his finger. Too bad that ring happened to be one of the Green Lantern Corps, and not of fear. Stunned a moment, Sinestro almost missed his chance to attack, though eventually got it together long enough to help Hal defeat Krona once and for all. With the battle done, the guardians decided to banish Hal for killing one of their own, while they took Sinestro to their citadel to attempt to remove the ring that had stuck itself to his finger. It refused to come off, and even they could not remove it. Could not, or would not, Sinestro was not sure. In the end, they told him it was a chance at redemption, and gave him a power battery. They told him to protect his sector, which happened to be 2814 this time around, as any other lantern would do. Annoyed, and confused, Sinestro could only leave their chamber with the lantern, to attempt to work out his next move. He was trapped in a corps he had been banished from before, and there seemed nothing he could do about it short of killing himself to get the damn ring off. When had life become so complex? Without his ring, he has no super strength, or really anything to make him stand out among the crowd. The only unique skill he has acquired, and can seemingly use without his ring, is his unique ability to see and understand the fears of others. He has also mastered various forms of martial arts, including the hilariously named "hammer fist" style. In addition, he has an extensive and comprehensive knowledge of the Green Lantern corps, the functions of their ring, and the members themselves, though that might be less of a power and more of a creepy fascination with his former enemy. He is an intelligent man, with the ability to create and distribute rings at his leisure. Though it started with yellow rings, which he manufactured on his own initially, after returning to the anti-matter universe, he can also apply his logic to the green lantern ring, able to replicate it either permanently, or as a ring to be used only for a short period of time. He can control who the ring can and can’t hit, how much power it has and when to shut it off. With his ring, Sinestro has all the other standard abilities of a Green Lantern, which includes, but is not limited to, the ability to create constructs and shields, the ability to fly and some increased healing. His knowledge of the ring far exceeds most lanterns, however, and he has a mastery of it very few can hold a candle to. WEAKNESSES: All rings have similar weaknesses, such as needing to be charged and the wearer being about to concentrate on their will power. This is not always easily done. Sinestro struggles to keep hold of his focus when in severe amounts of pain, though it does take a hell of a lot to get to that point. All the same, if he is too much trouble, he can have trouble staying in the game, and can be over-powered. He is also not as much of a fight without his ring as he would like to believe, and can usually be pounded into submission despite his apparent eagerness to always leap into a confrontation. Being drunk or disoriented will also have an adverse on the ring. Things like poisons are effective against lanterns, though eventually the ring will find a way to heal up against them if they are not quick enough kills. But they can stun or incapacitate someone like Sinestro, whose immune system is not familiar with many of the bacteria on earth. Without his ring, he would be highly susceptible to getting ill. Without a charge, Sinestro’s ring is useless. Draining a ring of it’s power is probably the greatest weakness of all, and not impossibly done. Though most lanterns believe it impossible, a ring can break from extreme use. Sinestro has broken two rings in the past for using too much power. His will power is so strong, it can actually work against him. It creates everything else in his arsenal, right down to the green outfit he bears. It is constructed from the energy of the ring, and is not a known material from anywhere else in the universe. The green portions of the suit are warm to the touch, while the black portions are cool. The colors of the suit can also change at will, though few know it beyond Sinestro. Suits also vary in style depending on the people who wear. Sinestro’s suit is more military-styled, because that is what he is most familiar with. Though all other lanterns in the Green Lantern Corps wear their rings on their right hand, Sinestro has always worn his on the left. Perhaps he just likes to be different.
