BEHAVIOR PROFILE Duela Dent was fractured so long ago that it's especially likely she can't even remember the events that made her the way she is today. Incredibly attached to her father, her sole parent after her mother either passed or left him, she is always more than apologetic about his actions as a Gotham gangster, perceiving him in something of a saintly light for his attitude toward her; He might have crippled, shot, stabbed and murdered dozens of Gotham civilians, but he was her father, and his love for her has almost certainly tainted her perception of things. It's thanks to him that Duela is intelligent as she is - certain problems with her mental faculties aside - and she is intelligent. It's just.. Unfortunate that she very much seems to have rose-tinted lenses when it comes to her father. He helped her to learn, he treated her like a princess, and he was gunned down right before her eyes. As such, it's possibly not surprising that Duela has assigned some kind of martyrdom to her father, effectively canonizing him. It is genuinely difficult to talk to Duela about her past because of this - Not only has she effectively made her father untouchable in death, but with the shock of his death, she also constructed an elaborate fantasy where he actually became one of Gotham's numerous supervillains. Occasionally, during periods where her mind became particularly hazy, she also believed her mother had become a supervillain - Catwoman. This in itself informed Duela's attitude as she embarked on her own costumed career. The costumes she tended to wear back then were more reflective of her mental state, and how it shifted as she suddenly considered one supervillain, then another, to be her father, and reflected her desire to catch up to them, somehow. And yet, along the way, she got distracted by the Teen Titans, somehow; At first, messing with them was a rather more simple outlet for her depression and sadness - albeit sadness that was itself quickly becoming masked, making Duela's 'crimes' against the Titans seem like frivolous fun and games in retrospect. And for the most part, it was; Duela could never really bring herself to hurt the Titans, and in a way, her games might have been a way for her to gain their attention, and to seek the help she somehow knew she needed. Regardless, she has long since come to respect the Titans and the help they have offered, and it's likely their presence in her life since the death of her father that stopped her really going off the deep end. She has played the turncoat once or twice - once before when Deathstroke offered her the chance of some answers about her life, for instance - but by and large, she has proven incredibly loyal to the group, and trusts them to a fault. She almost certainly considers them friends - her easy defection back from Titans East provoked by Raven simply telling her this, and would defend them to her dying breath. That she has spent so long with the Titans is reflective of just how much she values them in her life, even though she knows that her repeated returns are not a sign of any great progress on her behalf. Regardless, she enjoys the superhero/vigilante lifestyle, and the friendships she has cultivated along the way; She couldn't say she's incredibly close to any of the Titans - often regarding them as having her at arms length, just in case, but that doesn't mean she doesn't value what they offer. It is they that bring out the better side of her, the lighter side that prefers to do things with a laugh and a joke. She does have a particularly good sense of humour - one that often drifts off into Duela generally being a cloud-cuckoolander, so to speak, but she easily enjoys being like this more than she does being miserable and glum. Which is.. Well, something that can happen to Duela rather easily. Relatively recent events with the Joker have taken their toll on her, with Duela being somewhat distraught over the notion that her father actually was dead all this time; Undoubtedly, her mind will slowly but surely cover up this fact once more, but for the moment, talking about her father is an easy berserk button to press and aggravate Duela, and anyone who speaks about him negatively will find themselves on the receiving end of her wrath. She also absolutely loathes the Joker, and has returned to the Titans to find people who just might help her against him, but at the same time, she is actively terrified of him and what he did to her the last time she encountered him. She does have something of an incredibly bizarre love/hate relationship with the clown in her mind, since for all she utterly loathes him, her entire gimmick is still based on him. In some way, she could be actively scared of trying to be anything else, and in others, she could be seeking to set herself up as a more honourable and decent alternative to him. DOCUMENTED HISTORY Duela has always been something of an oddball, even amongst the unusual ranks of the Teen Titans. Initially playing the antagonist - in the loosest sense of the word - she would often confront the initial line-up of Teen Titans with comical exploits where she would masquerade as one of the Batman's infamous rogues gallery, then another. One time, she would be Catwoman's Daughter. Another, she would be Scarecrow's Daughter. Others, she would be the Penguin's Daughter. But the guise that she used most frequently was that of the Joker's Daughter, a guise which soon became slightly awkward when the man himself seemed to become increasingly murderous as the years went by. Truthfully, Duela had no idea who her father was, and merely had her surname, Dent, to go by. Duela Dent never really was the child of any of the supervillains she pretended to be. She isn't even related to Gotham's famously fallen from grace DA Harvey Dent, but in truth, her impersonations and routines and harassing the Titans masks a fairly standard and yet still entirely grievous pain in her past. Duela was the child of a Gotham gangster - Mad Jack Dent, who had hit it big in the days when Gotham was run by the mob and not ravaged by the latest supervillain to hit the scene. Whilst undoubtedly a despicable character to rival the Roman, whilst on the job, Mad Jack loved his daughter dearly, raising her in the madcap mansion that had once belonged to his mother and was now condemned, the House Dent. Filled with books, Duela received a home education like no other as her father spent all his spare time with her, using the derelict home to hide from the people he was making deals with. He filled her mind with knowledge and jokes. All kinds of jokes to keep her mind off the desolate truth of their situation. Naturally, inevitably, her father's dealings eventually caught up with him. He was gunned down during a confrontation with the police, right before Duela's eyes. They escaped back to House Dent, but it was too late for her father. Dying, he encouraged her to keep smiling, to bring chaos to the masses by using the funds he had stashed all around the massive mansion. Duela didn't entirely understand, and effectively switched off the moment her father passed. She refused to acknowledge it, and soon blocked it from memory. She knew that House Dent was hers, knew that she had lived her, but as far as she was concerned, her father had simply gone missing. For several months, she was passed between various Gotham orphanages, but soon, she escaped. It was around this time that the Gotham supervillains - the Joker, the Penguin, Catwoman and others, began to appear. Perhaps, in the back of Duela's broken mind, she put two and two together and made five. The Joker, with his garish appearance and sick sense of humour, bore an incredible resemblance to Duela's father. It was a simple equation that led her to believe he was her father, changed and distorted into something beautiful. And so, Duela resolved to change herself. At first, it was all fun and games; Joker fought the Batman, after all, so Duela went to harass and 'fight' the Teen Titans, none of whom could deduce her real identity. It was a good game, and to keep it fresh, she often kept the Titans on their toes by pretending to be the daughters of various other supervillains. After a time, the game got too stale, even with her playing alongside the Titans once or twice, and Duela disappeared for a period. She settled down for the most part, until Deathstroke recruited her for a little project called 'Titans East', where she was paired up with Enigma, the self-styled Riddler's Daughter, to torment Raven. Despite playing along at first, Duela's good side was eventually appealed to by Raven, and she quickly joined the Titans in taking the fight to Deathstroke's team, once again gaining a taste for the lifestyle. It was then that she finally worked up the nerve to go after the Joker himself, to try and find out the truth, and to see if he really was her father. Catching up with the Clown Prince of Crime in the midst of one of his latest rampages in Gotham City, she tried to attach herself onto him, truly believing herself to be his daughter. Naturally, his reaction was not the one she wanted. The Joker proceeded to pretty much destroy Duela, breaking her down piece by piece by explicitly telling her he wasn't her father, that he had known of her father, and proceeded to make him out to be a hack in the most derogatory of terms. And then, to top it all off, he proceeded to 'correct' the dismay on her face by carving her a new smile. Duela was broken once again. Having fully believed the Joker was her father, she was shattered. Saved by paramedics as Batman handled the Clown Prince of Crime, they fixed her face with the minimum of scarring, but the grotesque smile which had been inflicted on her still remained. Crestfallen, Duela considered giving up once more, but has since become determined to contribute to the Titans once again, and to put an end to men like the Joker. EXAMINATION RECORD It had been six weeks, now. Six weeks since her face had been sliced open and she had been left to die. At the hands of a man she thought could have been her father. Sitting alone in the horribly, clinically-white hospital room, beams of red-tinged Gotham sunshine pouring in through the windows, she had bedsheets covering her up to her waist. For the past twenty minutes, she'd been silently fascinated by the movements of her own feet beneath the thick covers, drifting off into some imaginary wonderland where they were moving hills - maybe even ones with eyes, Super Mario-style. It had been an entertaining enough diversion for a while, until Duela had been interrupted mid-whooping by one of the nurses, who had informed her it was time for dinner and her medication; Normally, Duela would scoff at such things as medication, but in this instance, it actually served something of an important purpose. They were anti-biotics, ones that supposedly made the healing process on her new-found glasgow smile all the more bearable, as well as some manner of cream or something along those lines that stopped it from itching. And - even at this point - good lord, did it itch. The doctors told her it was largely because of the nature of the wound, but both she and they had admitted that it was simply the nature of a scar or a scab that you just wanted to pick at it. Duela debated, in this particular instance, however, whether or not picking at the scabs lining her face from her lips to her cheeks could actually make things worse. It seemed especially unlikely, somehow. She already looked like she was the victim of some really bad bar-room brawl or whatever; Inside, she felt even worse. She couldn't even begin to touch on how she felt after what he had told her - it felt like.. Like there was something that stung inside each time she tried to approach it in any meaningful way. But really, at the heart of the matter? All that she really cared about was the fact that he was most definitely not her father. Her head ached so badly just thinking about that, frankly, but on the one hand, whilst she was depressed by the fact that she.. That she had to go and try to find her father again, she was absolutely relieved that she had nothing to do with that man. There was.. She couldn't have believed everything she'd heard about him, somehow - not when she believed that she might have some kind of link to him, but upon meeting the Joker at last, it just seemed like.. Like all the stories were true. He was a complete monster. Spooning some yoghurt into her mouth, Duela's lips curved around the spoon, before she abruptly shuddered at the memory of him taking his knife to her face. Sniffing, she wiped the first trace of tears from her eyes and set the empty pot down on the tray, before slipping from the bed and stepping to the window, looking out over the Gotham skyline; She knew he was out there, somewhere. Either in Arkham or having broken loose yet again, it made her simmer with rage. She just.. She couldn't understand why such a monster was allowed to live. Grimacing, her fingertips came to run along the lumpy, scarred, raised flesh of her new 'smile', and another shudder rocked her small form. She sighed again, but, eventually.. She smiled. Small, and slightly nervous, but a smile nonetheless. When she got the chance? When she saw the Joker again? Duela Dent was going to kill him for what he'd done. subject examined by Doctor Cyber | [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellpadding,0,true][atrb=valign,top][atrb=cellspacing,0,true][atrb=style, width: 40px;] J O K E R ' S D A U G H T E R |
