First day of school. For every individual, it was either extremely exciting or extremely frightening. Mia hadn't heard a whole lot of in betweens on the experience. For the ex prostitute, it was definitely going to be more on the frightening side. She hadn't been in a school setting in years, and she was going to be playing catch up all this year...at the very least.
Just as frightening as the academic implications were the social ones. Mia stared at the other students like they were some sort of exotic animal. Their customs weren't her customs. Strange, she had never noticed how much students were like sheep, or zombies- mindlessly following the demands of the all-powerful school bell. She noted the way they congregated in groups at the start of the school day, and wondered what clique she was supposed to fit into.
Their worries were far different than hers. How many of them had worried about finding a place to sleep every night? How many of them had ever considered the possibility of dying on some some street corner, unmissed and unmourned?
Mia took a deep breath, trying to calm her nerves. She needed to go to the office to get her schedule. She didn't know what strings Roy had pulled, but he had assured her that no one would be aware of her extracurricular activities over the last few years. That was probably the only reason she could go through with this- she couldn't imagine going to school with everyone knowing she had been a prostitute. Every boy would want to screw her and every girl in school would hate her.
She walked into the office. "Um, I'm Mia Dearden...the new student?"
A way-too-perky blonde woman chattered at her and handed out a schedule. The secretary helped her make sense of it and gave her directions to her first class. Mia thanked her and exited the office, heading towards her economics class.
As she headed toward an intersection, Mia's eyes rolled toward the ceiling- trying to recall which way she was supposed to go here. She looked around- had the woman said left and then right...or right then left?
