This culminated in his teenage years with the murder of his apex bully in jock Bo Griggs and his girlfriend(And Jonathan's one time crush) Sherry Squires. He has an unhealthy obsession with the fact that he was tormented and bullied as a child; everything from his fixation on fear to the guise that he takes up all correspond, somehow, to his negative experiences in school as a youth. This discovery of the power of fear is a mode of control for Crane, his only constant in a turbulent world. A rationalizing man he avenges real or perceived slights with a cool and calm demeanor He believes that there is nothing wrong with what he does, and that it is a perfectly reasonable, rational way of dealing with his personal struggles. He becomes alarmingly upset whenever one of his fellow rogues makes a joke about him, or when he is mocked or made fun of in newspapers or tabloids. Those who do assert themselves on him are deemed "bullies" and dealt with accordingly, in this way there is no honor among thieves and he won't hesitate to turn his fear toxins on allies and enemies alike. His vaunted intelligence is shown to wane on occasion where he devolves into an inclination to sing children's nursery rhymes while carrying out his exploits. Not as theatrical as some of Batman's other themed villains, and prefers to operate under dark, silent conditions; it adds to the atmosphere of fear that he desires to surround himself in. Crane obsesses over Batman; not in the same way that he does over his formative years, but in the sense that he is a living fear that the underworld has, a ghost in the darkness, a jabberwocky, spring heeled jack. An adversary that will always be three steps ahead of him. On some occasions, his fear gas has had lasting effects on Batman; in one instance, it made him paranoid and reclusive (even moreso than usual) for months. The Dark Knight is most grippingly effected by it, however, when it causes the memories of his parents to surface. He has been known to forge alliances with his fellow rogues infrequently; he has teamed up with the Joker and the Mad Hatter on more than a few occasions, gassing all of them at some point (to varied degrees of success) and he was one of Two-Face's lieutenants during the events of Dark Victory. His clear discomfort around the more licentious of batman's foes is noteworthy, as is his clear susceptibility to their wiles. He also played a crucial part in Hush and the Riddler's plan to unleash the Dark Knight's rogues gallery onto him relentlessly, and then break him. He is one of the Dark Knight's most prominent and feared adversaries, and he is sometimes considered to be the most disturbed. [/style][STYLE=color: #191919; font-size: 10px; margin-top: 10px; margin-left: 10px;]DOCUMENTED HISTORY[/style][STYLE= margin: 0px 10px 0px 10px; border: 2px solid #191919; padding: 2px; font-family: verdana; height: 125px; overflow: auto; font-size: 11px; color: #000000; text-align: justify; background-color: #ffffff; opacity: 0.8] Jonathan grew up nameless and unwanted throughout the first years of his life, born out of wedlock and scrawny his grandmother suggested he be given up or killed, his mother abandoned him, only his religious fanatic of a great grandmother took his charge. Not out of pittance or love, or even duty but because she had not the money to tend the fields nor her decaying palatial estate, so in a sense Jonathan was born into slavery. At best his great grandmother was cold and uncaring, at worst vengeful and verbally and physically abusive. Too old and frail to cane him or pull up a switch, -and secretly fearful of him- she found instead a most effective means of drowning his Sunday best in rats blood and allowing trained crows to peck at him from the run down church on their residence. Jonathan took this revelation to heart and came to realize that fear was control, when one could instill fear in those around him one could control them as well. His school was not a sanctuary, tormented throughout of his childhood because of his bookish nature and lanky frame, Jonathan Crane spent most of his years in school being afraid. As a teenager, he developed an admiration for Icabod Crane, the fictional protagonist of the book Sleepy Hollow, whom he saw a bit of himself in. After taking a cue from great granny's book and assaulting the local bully with a trained crow and receiving a beating from the boy for his troubles, years later He donned his Scarecrow outfit for the first time at age 18, assaulting the ring leader of the kids that picked on him, Bo Griggs, and his girlfriend (who rejected him earlier in the year), Sherry Squires. Squires was killed in the attack, and Griggs was paralyzed from the waist down. Now having only ever found solace in the forbidden library on the premises, he became a genius in the most deprived of "devil arts" as his great grandmother called them: Chemistry, biochemistry, and later psychology. Attaining several advanced degrees he became professor of psychology at a prestigious state university, specializing the psychology of fear. After a few years of teaching there, he accidentally injured a student during one of his lessons with a gun, though his class had an average over A as a result, he lost his job. Smitten with rage, he dug out his old Scarecrow costume, and then used his newly-developed fear gas on the regents who fired him.The most notable professor whom he considered a friend and ally, who did not come to his aid and save his career because of his desire to make tenure. Shortly after the murders, Batman begins investigating, not in time to save his father, but eventually tracks Crane down and apprehends him. Previous to this time the good doctor had been a staff psychologist at Arkham Asylum and worked with several of the inmates therein In short order Scarecrow escapes from Arkham Asylum with the aid of the Mad Hatter, and under the direction of Carmine Falcone, the two proceed to rob the Gotham City Depository. This attempt is foiled by Batman and Catwoman, and the two are taken back into custody. Scarecrow again was one of the prisoners that escaped from Arkham Asylum after Bane blew it up. He teamed up with the Joker, and together, the two abducted the Mayor of Gotham. Batman traced the pair to the sewers of the City, where they were holding the Mayor hostage. The two managed to escape, but during the chaos the Mayor was rescued. Later, the Joker savagely beat Scarecrow with a chair after he tried to poison him. He was sent back to Arkham shortly afterwards. Later, Scarecrow attempts to extract revenge on a young, undergraduate student who testified against him in court. While gasing her with one his toxins, he discovers that she is just like him when he was a boy; she is constantly tormented by all of her peers, and she wants nothing more than to be left alone. Deeply shocked by what he has learned, Scarecrow flees from her side temporarily in order to prepare for his new plans. Later, he returns to the girl, complete with a new costume for her and everything. He begs her to join him and "hit back" at those who torment her, but she rejects Crane, and tells him that he is insane. Batman arrives at the scene just in time, preventing a teary-eyed, emotionally wrecked Scarecrow from killing his would-be apprentice. He was one of the many rogues involved in the Hush conspiracy that was orchestrated by the Riddler. He used his expertise in psychology to evaluate his fellow freaks, and then he gave the Riddler (and his partner, Thomas Elliot) an estimation of what each one would want in exchange for their cooperation. Although he was instrumental to the plot's success, he only appeared briefly and was quickly defeated by Batman. More recently the Scarecrow is transformed into a murderous creature known as the Scarebeast by the Penguin and his assistant, Linda Friitawa (Fright), to kill off his disloyal colleagues. Through the intensely traumatic mutation, the Scarebeast possesses super strength, endurance, clawed hands, and the ability to release an even stronger hallucinogenic gas. After being defeated by Batman by injecting it with massive amounts of tranquilizers, the Scarebeast reverts back into Jonathan Crane, who ends up in a critical coma, from which he later awakens. KNOWN ABILITIES:
STRENGTH LEVEL: A bookish introvert, Jonathan possesses the physical strength of an a man his height and weight who does not engage in a regular physical fitness regime. His ability to kick is somewhat elevated due to his training in "violent dancing" but not to an extent to make him a physical force. As the Scarebeast he possesses superhuman strength and endurance enough to easily overturn cars. WEAKNESSES:

Dark was the night. The rain was coming down, he could hear the rain, even among the screams as the sirens died, as the struggles came to a close, there was the rain, it had been something of a calming sound for him as a boy. The water was cool against the peck scratches left by ravenous birds thanks to his Granny's "lessons". He found himself humming the cadence to Amazing Grace as he thought of it, as that old woman did. The idea, the fact that she had imprinted even a modicum of something onto him was enough to make him shake with righteous fury.
It did not bode well for the man who came shuffling into the darkness, from the light, he clawed at the door as it closed behind him, shouting gutturally to be let free, oh how free he would be, in time, all in due time Crane said as he stepped forward, the Scarecrow.
The figure whirled like a black clad dervish, his mask half on and off, his breast heaving, already he was a fount of fear, it permeated him, bound him and reverberated from him like a wallowing stench. "C..Crane."
"Only a shadow of that man, a shadow on the moon at night, filling dreams with worries and frights. Have a seat Jeremiah. We should talk." His voice rang of eerie rhyme, and Even decked in the costume as he was somewhat more congenial to an old comrade than he might've been, it seemed that the vaunted intellect of the prodigal son Jonathan Crane had asserted himself enough to allow him a moment to bandy words with an old college. After all Jeremiah Arkham, the onetime Black Mask and Crane, now irrevocably the Scarecrow, were once peers working under this roof, he'd given Jonathan a job when he'd been dismissed from university and a break from the tedium of janitorial work that was Jonathan's life in those dark, halcyon days.
For this he deserved a bit of patience, kid gloves, a bit of dignity and a microcosm of explanation. "Sit." His voice was half scarecrow there, darkened, guttural a bit, more assertive than skinny, tall Jonathan Crane could hope to be on his best of days.
The man nervously acquiesced. "You might be wondering why they chose me. Why not have Croc eat your innards? Joker and his insipid; yet affective gas? Nigma could certainly bore you to death with 2000 games of 20 questions. In the end-"
"No! I-"
"Don't interrupt Jeremiah. In the end, They decided what I do is just that much more excruciating."
His sweat rag, a wispy black silk rag came to his forehead and blotted it, he knew his MO enough to realize what was coming next. "Jonathan! I'm afraid that-"
A hiss could be heard as the gauntlet he wore that held the tube carrying his fear gas released, Scarecrow latched onto his face like the talons of the crow onto his own flesh as a boy. Gripping hard enough to break skin with blackened nail.
"No! you're not afraid! But you will be! You'll know fear! You'll shout hosannas of terror to me! The God of fear! Panicked prayers and fervent hymns! Your screams will be my gospel!" he'd lost it, his shouts were near as frantic as the man he'd doused with his fear gas, instead of high pitched hysterical that the former black mask emitted his were guttural caterwauls, laughs and groans of exultation.
As the black masked man fell, his masked pieces to the floor of the panic room, it's padded walls once wafted with the scent of the plastic lining, with the clinical smell of ammonia and oxide and amylase. It had been once a smell that was perfume to him, now the room stunk of his fear gas. This Asylum had once been his, now he was a rogue, like Jonathan, and the inmates were the law. Once the man before him- no, the god- had been but a boy, scared, pathetic, now he WAS FEAR.
And yet Scarecrow receded and forth came Jonathan Crane once more, he spoke measured and calm. "Pardon, I detest losing my temper, you know that. You want to know why we do this. It isn't because you failed, we've all done that, it's the reason the bat man is still alive. It isn't because you overreached from your pitiful station in life. We're all more than we once were, myself included. It's because you tried to make us your cronies, toadies, lickspittles. No one subjugates the rogues of this institution, you of all people should know that, you give us room and board for awhile, and then we're gone again. If you're going to make a play to take all the rogues, to sweep the board, you better succeed."
Jonathan drew forth a small glass he'd brought in the room with him, a glass of water and removed his mask just enough to take a lofty sip. "I found myself thinking of your fears right now Jeremiah. Stop me if I'm wrong, I do believe you've said I can be pedantic. I'm reminded of archaic words, you can discover what your enemy fears most by observing what he uses to frighten you."
He stooped down to meet the man, now covered in a sea of his own sweat and fluids, dry heaving and his heart pumping, and yet Scarecrow talked with rising ire, his ambition and adulation rising in his voice, giving a sermon on his most holy of subjects: fear "You took Roman's Black Mask persona because he was the personification of what you wanted to be. In control, not just of the underworld, but of death, he spit in it's face when he carved his mask out of his parents own coffin. And you old man..you"
His voice was dark and ominous now, goading, chiding, as if he were stabbing the man verbally. The venom enhanced tone that met Black Mask's ears sounded demonic, twisted and evil as satan himself thanks to the high dosage and extreme potency of the fear toxin "You fear your own mortal coil, father time, you've got one foot in the grave. Feel it, feel the fear, your heart racing, bones aching, wrinkles cracking your face, brains on fire and your vision is closing. Oblivion is closing in on you old man, no black mask can hide you from the reaper. You're buried alive, clawing at the inside of your own coffin, can you feel it? The heat of that closed in space, the darkness, the smell of a pine box." Arkham's fingers were bloody on the floor as he dug into it before his heart gave out and he collapsed into his death throes and the warmth of his own lifes blood and panicked vomit.
As he knocked "shave and a haircut" into the door he was released. Blockbuster handed him his coat after another glass of water "How did it go doc?"
"It was enlightening. A real breakthrough. A frightening, heartbreaking breakthrough."
