She is a young woman with two aspects, one light and one dark, and it has taken her years to come to terms with both of them, nor was it easy for her to do so. In Rose’s mind, the dark side of her might be best represented by her father, while the good side comes from her mother, but she knows it isn’t that easy. And, in many ways, whatever she tells the world or herself, she is very much her father’s daughter. To most people, Rose presents herself very much as somebody who couldn’t care less. Playing the femme fatale comes easily to her and it is a role she relishes too, so this is how she comes across to quite a lot of people. She’s a bad girl, she’s sexy, she’s dangerous and she knows it. One might consider how she used to walk through Titans Tower in downright skimpy workout gear or how she was ever happy to flirt outrageously with the boys if it took her fancy, flaunting her body without much concern. For Rose, it doesn’t matter – because it was her choice. She smokes too, not really caring what effects it might be having on her body, and certainly used to drink. She rides motorcycles, wears tight clothing most of the time and indulges in one night stands that end with her kicking the unfortunate guy out at the point of her sword. To a degree, yes, this is a front. On the other hand, it is also who Rose is. She never was a ‘good’ girl, not in that sense, and she is damaged enough that it is unlikely she could ever be one now even if she wanted to – which she doesn’t. Rose is more than happy enough the way that she is. It is, thus, fair to say that Rose has an attitude. At her worst, she is petty and manipulative in the extreme, willing to say or do anything to get what she wants, but most of the time this isn’t true. Most of the time, Rose is just aggressive and direct, with a biting streak of sarcasm that is essentially second nature. As a rule, Rose only stops being sarcastic when she’s furious, when she switches from ripping into people with her words to doing it with her swords. Most sensible people should take the sarcasm. This is a defence mechanism or was originally, now it is just part of Rose’s nature. Rose is also aggressive. She hates being on the defensive, a tendency that almost ensures the escalation of any argument in which she is a party – she won’t just sit back and cope, she’ll strike back hard. It also shows in how she rarely waits for an explanation. If she thinks she is threatened, Rose attacks verbally or physically. If challenged, she challenges the other. And she almost never backs down unless forced to do so. This goes for relationships as much as anything else, because Rose is the sort of person who sees what she wants and then takes it, because (in her mind) life never hands you anything. You have to take it. Moving on then, combat is in Rose’s blood. She knows it and likes nothing better than the thrum of adrenaline through her veins and the rush of victory. Rose hates to lose, a rare occurrence to be sure, but defeat isn’t something she ever takes lying down. No, she tends to seek out a rematch at the first opportunity. Further, she spends a lot of time training, as much because she enjoys the adrenaline rush than because she needs to improve on her already impressive close combat skills. In actual combat, she’s a brutal fighter, who cheerfully breaks bones or severs limbs without blinking her remaining eye. It made some of her former teammates more than a little uncomfortable to see just how vicious Rose can get, but she just doesn’t care. The only line she used to have much respect for is the one about heroes not killing unless she is pushed to the breaking point – and that was before she fought Will and his goons. Otherwise, people who get in a fight with her can just about expect to need full body casts – she is undoubtedly more ruthless and vicious than most even before she is pushed. When pushed, Rose is your worst nightmare, written in blood and death, lacking both pity and mercy. Partially because she is Deathstroke’s daughter, partially as a result of her own well-earned reputation and partially because, to those who know to look, she has that edge to her, Rose is intimidating in person which is only added to by her arrogant, predatory strut. She is confident to the point of arrogance in her abilities, almost to the point of egotism though she’d argue that she’d earned the right the hard way. People have to work to impress Rose, and work hard because her respect isn’t something she hands out easily or freely. People she actually likes are even rarer. Rose has no time for those she sees as hypocrites or whiners, while she tends to actually like those who are willing to tolerate her quirks as well as those who treat her like a human regardless. She holds grudges for life though and has an easily roused and volcanic temper. Nor is she terribly patient and Rose hates being bored. That said, Rose does want to belong but she wants to belong without having to give up who she is. That was the problem she had with the Titans and it is why she has never quite been able to just ignore Slade’s continued existence. Up until recently, he was her only living family and she couldn’t quite bring herself to sever the last strings that tied them. With the promise of her mother being alive, that has changed somewhat. Now she has hope, which let her walk away from her father and half-brother. As of yet, she hasn’t found a family, but in her team at N.O.W.H.E.R.E. she hopes that she might have found a replacement for the Titans who will accept her for who she is. More than that, she has managed to accept that simply acting like her father does not make her a monster or anything like him. Now, she makes her choices not based on avoiding what Slade would do but based on her own code. Rose does have a distinct desire to do good. She would argue that she wanted to be a hero, but that denying her nature as she aspired to only one side of it was killing her. So now she tries to be true to herself as a whole. There are things she won’t stand. Enslavement, hurting innocent people for no reason, killing young children. But equally Rose has done terrible things herself, things that have likely put her beyond the pale of the hero community and she knows it. But, as long as she can live with herself, she no longer cares what the others think or say about her. To sum up then, Rose is a fiercely independent young woman with a cruel streak and dangerous issues. She may not be mad, but she’s a bad girl and someone it is dangerous to know, let alone to get too close to, and she is looking for her place in the world – Heaven help anyone who gets in her way. Her mother was Lillian ‘Sweet Lili’ Worth, a princess who Slade was hired to extract from Cambodia to Thailand for her own safety – she was a target of the Khmer Rouge as a member of the royal family even after the destruction of her family’s kingdom. The mission was after Slade’s divorce from his wife, Addie Kane, and he found himself falling in love – or at least in lust - with Lilli, who impressed Slade with her toughness and skill despite her background of privilege. The two quickly became lovers during the trials of the mission, remaining in contact after the end of the mission and indulging their affair whenever their paths crossed over the years. On one of these occasions, Lillian became pregnant. Months later, with Slade completely unaware, she gave birth to a little girl, who she named Rose. Already concerned about the safety of a child who had no way to defend herself in the dark and dangerous world that her lover moved in, Lili didn’t tell Slade about his daughter – thinking it in Rose’s best interests as well as in Slade’s, so that his daughter couldn’t be used as a weapon against him. Instead, she chose to settle down outside New York, where she used her money and contacts to set up a brothel that was, in essence, a fortress. Accessible only through tunnels, heavily guarded by hired guns, Lillian ensured that those who worked for her were well protected and well rewarded. Rose was raised with the children of Lili’s workers, many of whom were her own age, and her mother hired in the best tutors that she could afford to attend to Rose’s education. In particular, aware that their life together might not last, her mother made sure that she was trained in how to defend herself – just in case. Of course, eventually Slade came back into their lives. He’d been injured, and Lillian took him in, caring for him even though he was on the run from the police. At the same time, his faithful friend, Wintergreen saw the young Rose. With her father’s white hair and sharp blue eyes, he could hardly mistake the resemblance and soon suspected the truth. But this was enough. Hating Slade, his cruel half-brother took up the Ravager identity and went after those close to him. Although no one ever knew how, Wade DeFargo knew that Rose was his niece – so he kidnapped her, telling her the truth of her parentage while he tortured her. Lillian and Wintergreen effected a rescue, but it led to the death of Lillian, though her body was never found. When Rose then revealed the truth to him, Slade, fearing he would be a bad father, left his daughter in the care of the Teen Titans, despite Wintergreen offering to adopt her himself. Rose was only with the Titans briefly, her experiences leaving her unstable and prone to both brooding and violence – harbingers of her future. But she made several friends while she was there, one of which led to her acting as the nanny and protector for Roy Harper’s daughter Lian for a time. Eventually, Rose was adopted by a family called the Madisons, who took her in and gave the troubled girl a normal happy life for a while. Although she was still more violent than most, they accepted her. But then Ravager, apparently hired by persons unknown to kill her, swept in to murder her foster parents and to collect the reward on Rose’s head. Just in time, the Teen Titans arrived to stop him, but the entire room was gassed with Rose and the Ravager gone when the Titans awoke. It turned out to have been Slade who ‘saved’ his daughter. He claimed to be lonely now that everyone he cared about except her was dead, and wanted Rose to be at his side. She accepted his offer to train her, but Slade first ordered her to kill the Ravager, offering her his gun. Turning it down, Rose then demanded his sword, before mercilessly killing Ravager – her uncle – and taking on his name, becoming the new Ravager. Following this, Rose and her father fought the Church of Blood and the Titans in an attempt to make sure that Rose’s half-brother – Joey – was really dead. They failed when Rose hesitated to kill one of the Titans while Jericho possessed him. Afterwards, as Slade scolded her, despondent and reckless, Rose took a knife and tore out her own left eye, attempting to prove to him that she was just like him. Continuing to work alongside her father, the Ravager joined the Society of Supervillains with him. As a member, she and Deathstroke pretended to be Batgirl and Batman to rescue Dr Light from the authorities before accepting a contract on Cassandra Cain issued by the Penguin. She fought Batgirl on almost equal terms only to lose when her father’s presence distracted her and led to Batgirl cutting Ravager’s throat, forcing Deathstroke to retreat to get her medical attention. That led to Slade blackmailing the hero (albeit pretending to be a mercenary) Nightwing into training his daughter. Although he did train Rose in his fighting style, Dick also took the opportunity to teach her about how to be a hero. In a final attempt to prove where Grayson’s loyalties lay, Slade implanted a dangerous crystal in Rose’s empty eye socket, before setting her and Nightwing up to fight a powerful hero. Despite Ravager’s attempts to kill him, the hero survived and Nightwing took the opportunity to blackmail Slade. Unless he kept the supervillains of the Society out of Bludhaven, Dick would tell Rose about the long term effects of Kryptonite poisoning. However, Slade broke his word, ordering the bombing of Bludhaven during the Infinite Crisis. In retaliation, Nightwing broke in to his safe house and revealed what the Kryptonite left in her eye socket would do to Rose. Horrified that her life held so little value to her father, Rose fled from him, severing all ties, and Slade let her go. Nightwing helped Rose detox from the serum and argued for her membership of the new Teen Titans, despite her past. However, despite her best attempts and some new-found friends, Rose didn’t fit in there. A final incident saw her leave due to the continuing mistrust of the others, first to join the Clock King and his Terror Titans (a time that saw her and other meta heroes destroy the Darkseid Club and block the Clock King’s plans) and then to go her own way. At this time, thanks to Clock King, she was addicted to epinephrine, a habit that was – unknown to her – already wreaking habit on her body and its systems. Her path took her to Alaska, where she found a little town named Eagle’s Nest. It was here that Rose found out about the costs of her drug habit and also here that she found a smuggling ring run by a man named Will. He made several attempts to kill her and even tried to drug her into an obedient supersoldier. However, all failed and Rose tracked him to Arkhangelsk in Russia, where they finished their fight. In the end, Rose slaughtered his men and, following the death of a girl, she drowned Will himself. Rose vowed to stop caring what others thought of her and not to hesitate when the moment was upon her. Then she went to kill her father. Unfortunately for Rose, their confrontation fell during the time known as the Blackest Night, when the dead walked. The safehouse where she and Slade were fighting was attacked by the zombies of his past – Wintergreen, Addie Kane, his son Grant, Wade DeFargo – and Rose was caught in the middle, forced to work together with her father and Jericho to stop the dead. They succeeded. But, in the aftermath, Rose realised something. Her mother hadn’t been among the creatures, a sign she took to mean that Lillian had survived somehow. Ignoring Slade’s offer to stay with him and Jericho, Rose went her own way again, searching for signs of her mother’s survival. It was this desperate hunt that brought her to the newly formed N.O.W.H.E.R.E. organisation. Already a proven operative, Rose was approached by the group with an offer. If she would help them with their plans as a hunter-agent, they would allow her to use their resources in turn to find her mother. At a loose end and needing both money and support to continue her quest, Rose agreed.
