GENDER: Male

BEHAVIOR PROFILE[/style][STYLE= margin: 0px 10px 0px 10px; border: 2px solid #191919; padding: 2px; font-family: verdana; height: 125px; overflow: auto; font-size: 11px; color: #000000; text-align: justify; background-color: #ffffff; opacity: 0.8] To put things simply, Effigy is one hot headed person. He doesn't like to take crap from anybody, and he hates being pushed or bossed around. Effigy has a strong need for independence and if it means blasting someone out of the way to make that point, then he will do it. He's impulsive, brash, hard headed, and straight forward with everything he says and does. Effigy does things simply because he thinks he “can”.
There's one thing Effigy hates and that's people who “think-they-know-it-all”. He cannot stand someone who is bossy and who belittles him constantly, he finds that very annoying and since he lacks the ego deep inside very hurtful. He has no absolute quest in life, but to simply prove that he is somebody, that “hey look at me” you can't push me around anymore. Effigy's willing to do whatever it takes to be one of the big hotshots in the world.
Not a surprising attribute, but Effigy is quite the hot head. When knocked off his own pedestal he gets quite defensive or rather, offensive toward the entire situation and will fight, and will kick, and will scream till he miraculously becomes the victor. Like anybody else he doesn't take failure too well, nor does he take anybody yelling or screaming at him. He's a pretty emotional fellow and when pushed to the limits will take his emotions to a new level that most likely takes on the form of a beast made of complete fire.

Raised in Seattle, Washington, by his alcoholic father after his mother had died, Martyn Van Wyck was a bitter and resentful man. Constantly in conflict with authority figures, he aspired to a career as a musician, but could not obtain even menial work in the music industry.
One night, a female acquaintance kicked him out of her car after an argument. Left 54 miles outside of Seattle, he was about to start hitchhiking back when a bright, overpowering light appeared in the sky.
Van Wyck only had vague images of being in a room with figures standing over him. He was on a table and had the impression the figures were going to hurt him. The figures were the Controllers, an alien race that had originated on Maltus and had split from the Guardians of the Universe some three billion years ago.
Six days later, two men in a pickup truck found Van Wyck in the middle of the road. Van Wyck was naked and confused, so the men took him to the nearest emergency room. The doctors could find nothing wrong with him except that his eyes had changed from blue to a flame-like flickering orange.
Meeting with his friends, Van Wyck told them all he knew about his condition. When the owner of the coffee shop they were sitting in asked them to leave, Van Wyck responded with a beast made out of flame. He realized he could do anything he wanted with his newfound powers. Outside the coffee shop, an argument with a driver was quickly won by Van Wyck when he torched the man's car. In his anger, Van Wyck had transformed. His skin had turned white, while his hair turned to flame and he was dressed in a red costume. He also found to his astonishment that he possessed the power of flight.
Talking with his girlfriend, Trace, Van Wyck explained how he was sick of being "pushed around" by others and things would change now that he had powers. Trace described the images he made in the flames as burning effigies, an image or copy. Van Wyck liked the word, and took the name Effigy. He decided to leave Seattle and Trace behind. As far as he was concerned, his life as Martyn Van Wyck was over; he was now only Effigy.
Van Wyck traveled to Hollywood, California, where he promptly set out to get attention by causing destruction, just because he could. Burning the famous "Hollywood" sign caught the attention of the media, which in turn caught the attention of Green Lantern Kyle Rayner. Effigy relished the chance to take on a member of the Justice League and quickly attacked.
Effigy and Green Lantern battled across Hollywood and down to the coastline. Finally, it appeared Green Lantern had overcome the new villain. Suddenly, a bright light appeared above the two combatants. It was the Controllers and they had returned to reclaim Effigy. They had released him thinking their experiments were a failure. Green Lantern attempted to stop them from taking Van Wyck but they were too powerful for the ring wielder. Effigy was taken aboard the ship, which left Earth. Inside, the Controllers continued their experimentation, simply because they could.
Pawn of the Controllers
Rayner next encountered Effigy on his way to confront the Controllers about their psychic tampering with his mind. Before Rayner could enter their ship, The Controllers dispatched Effigy, whom they had apparently made into their obedient servant but in doing so had removed much of his individuality, rendering him a nearly mindless drone. Effigy, sans imagination and willpower, was no match for a Green Lantern, and Rayner easily defeated him. Rayner left Effigy drifting in space while he dealt with the Controllers, reasoning that Effigy's powers would protect him.
Return to Earth
Effigy somehow made his way back to Earth, where he had a brief affair/adventure with the second Killer Frost. During this time, they attracted Green Lantern Kyle Rayner, whom the new couple quickly immobilized. Afterwards, Killer Frost began to lecture Effigy on his poor performance, and insisted that during battle he defer to her expertise and experience when dealing with superheroes. Effigy took offense to this and began to have second thoughts about their relationship.
Rayner eventually caught up with Effigy and Killer Frost. This time, however, he buried Killer Frost under a mountain of ice she had created, thus interrupting her heat absorbing powers. Effigy was about to dig her out when suddenly he decided to save himself and ditch Killer Frost. He ignited a passing car to distract the Green Lantern and flew away thinking "the only thing worse than a know-it-all superhero is a know-it-all supervillain."
Breakdown
Prior to Kyle Rayner's transformation to Ion, Effigy was discovered by Jade, having apparently suffered a psychotic breakdown. His schizophrenia had manifested through his powers, with the creation of three independent pyrokinetic characters calling themselves Torch, Blaze and Ember. Jade and Rayner defeated the three aspects and Effigy agreed to return to prison.
Afterward, he was not seen until appearing among the ranks of the Society, working with other fiery villains such as Heat Wave. It can be assumed that his recovery was caused by Despero (similar to how he probably awoke Scorch from her coma).
One Year Later
One Year Later Effigy was once again set against Kyle Rayner (going again by the name of Ion) by a mysterious enemy, bent on the Guardians destruction, after the failure of Alex Nero. Defeated, was unable to remember the name of his contractor, his orders have been given in a subliminal way and later expunged from his mind.
Going rouge for awhile, Effigy seemed to have lost himself however regained his villainous after being picked up by Lex Luthor and working with the criminal mastermind for some time. His time with Lex however was short as Triumph from the Pantheon invaded the criminal's building demanding that he hand over his subjects Effigy and Zoom for the formation of his team.
Joining league with the Pantheon, Effigy worked with them for a short time until ARES, the Pantheon's super computer created a Kryptonian body for himself and began to rid of every member of the Pantheon, this including Effigy.
Though ARES had thought he completley disposed of the fire demon, he was wrong. Doctor Cyber located Effigy, or at least the weak remainders of him and restored him back to his normal form offering him the admission onto another team and promising him to ensure that everything he ever wanted would one day come true. His powers allow him to fly, fire flame blasts, and can apparently protect him from the vacuum of space.
- Pyrokinesis: Eiffgy possesses the innate psionic ability to generate and manipulate fire. By agitating molecules in the air, he is able to modify any flame to his liking whether it be by heat, intensity or size. His pyrokinetic abilities enable him to generate intense flames that allow him to fly, generate intense heats, use fire as a concussive force or as radiation.
- Solid Constructs: Similar to the Green Lantern's, Effigy's pyrokinetic abilities take one step further by allowing him to solidify fire. By creating solid constructs, he is only limited to his imagination and the amount of concentration he has. Effigy can create battle armor, various weapons, firey creatures of copies and just about anything that he can imagine.
- Energy Absorption and Projection: By concentrating, Effigy can absorb various forms of energy and then release it as a concussive blast toward his enemies. So long as Effigy has the concentration and will to do so, he is able to absorb different intensities or forces of energy that is throw at him. If not concentrating, he could fatally hurt himself.
- Durability: Effigy's powers allow him to survive in the very vacuum of space. He is also able to create barriers or forcefields in order to defend himself in battle. The power of these shields are all guided by his willpower.
- Flight: Effigy can fly by way of his own willpower.
- Uniform: When donning the power of Effigy, Martyn wears a complete red body suit, his skin turns white, and his hair becomes inflamed. This uniform increases his natural durability as well as allow him to survive in intense temperatures and various environments.
Known Abilities:
- Brawling: An untrained fighter, Effigy is your basic brawler, capable of shooting cheap hooks and kicks whenever he pleases or gets the chance. He's no world class fighter but he knows how to dodge here and there, roll with a punch, and throw a pretty nasty punch when necessary. In short, he can handle himself in a meager fight, but when it comes to fighting with the big boys he is better off keeping his distance and fighting from afar.
- Imagination: Having an overactive imagination helps when it comes to powers like Effigy's. With his abilities he can quite literally create anything that he thinks, be it an inflamed dragon, a burning shield, or even a battle suit completely scorched in flames. Some people aren't naturally gifted with such a runaway imagination but fortunately for Effigy he has enough to keep him going till the end of the day.
- In Flight Combat: It's one thing to be able to fight on land, with some solid surface beneath your feet, but to fight in the air, that's a whole other story. Effigy is skilled in aerial combat, with the combination of his ranged combat skills he can easily overpower anybody who isn't as adept as he is. There is some grace and beauty in the way he battles while in flight, and with flickering flames following after him, he's quite the spectacle in battle.
- Power Knowledge: Being the only of his kind, Effigy is rather unique in terms of powers. There is probably no one else in the universe like him, which is a huge upper hand because no one can easily fathom what he is quite capable of. Being able to solidify fire and to project such concussive forces isn't easy and Effigy knows just how to use his power, when to use it, and how to quite literally push it to the max.
- Survival: He has been through a rough upbringing, an alien abduction, and has been left floating in the very vacuum of space. So he's not as practical or resourceful as the average Joe, but he is adaptive and knows how to get himself out of tight niches when it counts. Effigy's a tough cookie, so when you think you've got him down for the count, think again because he is sure to pop up as your worst nightmare.
- Ranged Combat: Due to the nature of his powers, it is only natural that he be good in distance combat. Blasting, firing, and creating ranged weapons is a specialty of his and he does pretty well at keeping his opponents at the tips of his ember licking flames. His ranged combat skill makes up for his weak brawling abilities, and it makes up big time.
- Intimidation: Being an inflamed being, with white skin and a sleek red right suit is a pretty intimidating look. Sure he's no Lex Luthor or Darkseid, but just his outward appearance is enough to get a weak minded soul shaking in their own pants. It's quite an upper hand when dealing with the civilian masses, since you know burning maniac targets is usually no big challenge.
Strength Level: Akin to a human male that exercises on an irregular schedule, instead relying on the suit’s talents.
Weaknesses:
- Water Exposure: Although Effigy's power can have an effect on any substance, his powers are dampened with confronted with water. It's not a great weakness when in small sizes, but a vast amount of water could severely hinder his powers, making it hard to agitate molecules at will and making the damp environment around him hard to manipulate in terms of heat or fire energy.
- Lack of Willpower: Unlike the Green Lanterns Effigy possess very little willpower. The only force that drives him is the will to live and to prohibit everyone from pushing him around. However, since his willpower is a very small fraction in comparison to the Green Lanterns, he can be easily distracted in the midst of battle, which can cause him to lose concentration and be unable to control his own powers.
- Mind Control: Effigy is extremely susceptible to Mind Control, the Controllers did it to him once, anybody could do it to him again. Because his willpower is so weak, anybody can manipulate his mind and control him to their whims. A very annoying weakness, but an effective one nonetheless.
- Impulsive: After gaining his powers, Effigy consumed himself in it and stated that he would no longer become a pushover. Seeing as to how he was granted an ability that would ensure that, he is always one to perform an action before he thinks. He is so bent on overpowering everybody that he will rush into battle without a steady plan of action in mind. His impulsiveness and brash attitude make it hard for him to get into a fight simply because he is driven more so by a burning emotions than a calculating force of mind.
